Good result in East Cork Oil U21 Hurling Championship
Castlelyons 2-18 Carrig na bhFear 2-8
We
travelled to Rathcormac to play Carrig na bhFear in the first round of the East
Cork U21 B Championship on Monday night last. This was the game of two halves
with a very strong wind blowing directly up the pitch and the team that made
the best use of the wind were always going to be in control.
We won the toss and elected to play with the wind in the 1st half and we took the game to Carrig na bhFear from the off with early scores from Tom Carroll, Ronan Bransfield and Anto Spillane. Ronan Bransfield got in for a well worked goal to extend our lead and with further points from Alan Fenton, Ronan O Regan, Jamie O Leary and Brian O Donovan we were well in control. Alan Fenton got in for a well taken goal and with a point from Ronan O Regan we led at half time by 2-11 to 0-04.
Second
half was tough against the wind but we had some good performances by our backs
with Niall O Leary, Shane Fenton, Declan Varner, Jamie O Leary and Tom Carroll
defending very well. We created some good goal chances in this half which were
well saved by the Carrig na bhFear goalkeeper but with points from Alan Fenton,
Anto Spillane and Brian O Donovan we maintained our lead. Good to see Anto Spillane back hurling again after a lengthy injury and no doubt he will sharpen up a lot more in another few weeks to hit the high spots of last year when he done so well against a star studded Waterford in the Munster U21 championship.
We conceded 2 goals to Carrig na bhFear which kept them in the game but we finished strongly with points from Ronan Bransfield, Anto Spillane and Brian O Donovan to win on a score of 2-18 to 2-8. This was a good performance by the lads in tough conditions and more work and sharpening up we will be in with a good chance in the next round against a slick Carrigtwohill outfit.
Team: - Jack Barry, Shane Fenton, Declan Varner, Coran Lawlor, Colm O Neill, Tom Carroll (0-1), Keith O Leary, Niall O Leary, Ronan Bransfield (1-3), Jamie O Leary (0-1), Shane Moroney, Ronan O Regan (0-2), Alan Fenton (1-3), Anthony Spillane (0-5, 3f), Brian (Dunny) O Donovan (0-3).
Subs: D Beausang, M Geary, A Henley, C O Flynn.
Premier Hurling
Castlelyons 2-21 Kilworth 0-22
We played a challenge against Kilworth in Castlelyons. Games between Kilworth and Castlelyons always have a strong bit and this was no different with Kilworth almost at full strength and Castlelyons short a few.
The first had had some mediocre hurling and scores were even with Kilworth floating over the last three points to leave it 0-10 to 0-7 at half time in favour of Kilworth.
However, we upped our game considerably in the second half and with the help of two goals from Shane Moroney and Michael John Dorgan we ran out winners by five points. Preparations continue for the championship game v Ballinhassig in a few weeks time and
Team: - Jack Barry, Colm O Neill, Colm Barry, Tom Carroll, Jamie O Leary (0-2), Colm Spillane (0-3, 1f), Phillip Mahon (0-2), Robbie Feeney, Niall O Leary (0-2), Anthony O Regan, Ronan Bransfield (0-1), Keith O Leary, Brian O Donovan (0-1), Shane Moroney (1-2), Michael Spillane (0-8, 7f), Subs; Shane O Sullivan, Ronan Fenton, Michael John Dorgan (1-0), Mark Murphy, David Beausang.

Castlelyons Hurl - Cam Tournament 15
As part of the Castlelyons Community Festival Weekend we had the first running of a Unisex Hurling Tournament on Friday evening last. With four teams taking part which involved fifty players ranging from juveniles, minor and adult both hurling and camogie . This was an Inaugural Tournament with the Rules and Regulations written by the Cultural Officer. There was a good crowd and it is a pity that some more supporters did not come as all there had a mighty evening. As the games progressed and to players got into and around the rules it really took off.
Right from the start there was atmosphere with Team Seoighe taken onto the Pitch in a trailer and Quad by Bainisteoir Johnny Joyce. Despite the great work of his Maor Foirne, Jimmy O Leary, who like others on today's Examiner was prominent in an illegal seat in the front of the Quad and some advice from Dave Hegarty Mr Joyce had a tough evening and went out a bit early.
Bainisteoirs Mark O Flynn, Sean Cotter and James O Neill were really up for it and seemed to have better teams with Bainisteoir James O Neill taking the Cup with his outfit Mitchell's Maids
Mark Murphy had the distinction of setting the tone by picking up the first red card of the tournament a feat he managed to repeat in the final. Overall, what a night for the players - guys, girls and juveniles and we look forward to this being a part of our 1916 - 2016 celebrations next year. That was a time of such ferocity that the Referee blew the whistle from a tree in order to save himself from a belt of a hurley if there was a dodgy decision.
Well done to all and to those who came into Ruby and the Nighthawks who performed indoors later - we look forward to next year.
