Premier Hurling Championship Draw 2015

The draw the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship 2015 took place at the County Convention on Sunday last. Castlelyons drew the short straw as they are drawn to play one of the favorites Kanturk in the 1st round. Kanturk have a mighty line up of Anthony Nash, Cork all Star, Aidan Walsh now focusing totally on hurling for Cork and, of course, Lorcan McLaughlin an ever present in cork hurling for the last few years and many more good ones.

New to the Premier Grade last year Kanturk recorded high scoring wins over good Blarney and Inniscarra teams and then suffered an unexpected defeat in the Semi Final to Newcestown in a low scoring game 0-12 to 0-9.  So it is clear they certainly have made big strides.

Castlelyons All Stars - 2014Never the less our lads have done well over the last few years despite a little drop in form last year.  We have our own trusted warriors and, indeed, so many have seen massive success at underage level. Castlelyons made it to the Final only to suffer last minute defeat to Youghal in 2012 so last year was a bit of an anti climax and motivation was difficult but we have quality players to take this onto serious level again.

To do this in the words of the great Poet Robert Frost lads you will have to “go the road less travelled”.  That is one of serious commitment and discipline and that’s a player’s decision.  There were Minor and Under 21 Finals successes only a short time ago and the place was buzzing with results and expectation.  One thing for sure class is permanent with form temporary and I trust that our players will make an impact again.  So regardless of opposition we look forward to a cracking year.  Don't forget there are some young Turks on the way too thanks to the work of the Juvenile Club.  Castlelyons Abú.

Imokilly Men and a Lady in Officerships after County Board Convention

Dan Hoare took up as President of the cork County Board. This is a tremendous and deserving honour for the St Catherines man who has given so much service t the GAA.

Ger Lane of Bride Rovers has become County Chairman and everyone in the club wish him best of luck in his new role.

Tracey Kennedy, Killeagh has taken up Vice Chairperson of the County Board.  What an honour for the Killeagh lady and richly deserved as she drove the position of the County PRO to new heights over the last three years with hard work and quality.

Kieran McGann continues in the position of Irish/Cultural Officer of the Cork County Board for one more year.

Castlelyons Puc Fada -  St Stephens Day - New Route - New Craic

This year's Puc Fada will be in memory of Padraig Fenton whose anniversary occurs at this time. Padraig was a huge part of Castlelyons GAA as he travelled to all our games for many years and ardently kept the score.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm dílis. In memory of Padraig all proceeds this year will go to Enable Ireland.

Seanie - like Quicksilver with the CamánTherefore we make a special appeal as many girls, boys and adults come along and support this great cause. The morning is open to everyone from school going age to adults alike with teams of 4 to consist of 2 adults and 2 juveniles with an entry fee of €20 per team.

This year the Puc Fada will take a completely new route and the Juvenile Club are busy preparing the Event Plan, technical details and Stewarding.  This is a very exciting route and will start near the Pitch and Putt Club, taking a clockwise route, passing the graveyard on your right, turning right at Kill-St-Anne North crossroads and coming on to the main road at Spraoi Cross and then heading towards Castlelyons village with the finish line at the 1st speed bump.

Puc Fada Skill

Beating the slioter along this new Route will entail a lot of skill as one has to avoid belting of high stone walls, some soft briary ditches, over a bridge and before heading down the straight back to the village.  However, over the years on the old Route some teams have produced outstanding results with people not known for hurling skill but obviously cute and able to hold the head in battle.

The 1st team will be off at 11am with registration taken on the morning. We will have a presentation of prizes in the Community Centre bar afterwards with free finger food where we would hope that everyone will attend. So shake off the cobwebs of Christmas and come out and support a great cause and have a bit of craic. Pat O'Sullivan of the Juvenile Club has kindly taken on the organising side of this and he can be contacted at 087-8188612 should you want to enter early.

So for one great morning it’s the Puc Fada in Castlelyons – end and start your year on a skillful note
