Cork Red FM Division 3 Hurling League

Blarney 3-14 Castlelyons 2-20

Castlelyons travelled to Blarney to play the locals in a vital round of the Red FM hurling league division 3 on Thursday evening last.  It was heartening to see a few lads back and warming up with the panel before the game.  We started well but had a few wides and Blarney had a point before Keith O’Leary and Alan Fenton settled us with a few points.  There was a good standard of hurling developing in the game and Cathal McCarthy of Blarney was very handy on the frees as they really challenged us.  Colm Spillane who put in a powerful display at centre back over the hour drove over a great score and Barry Murphy working very hard at centre forward scored a point.  It was five apiece with fifteen minutes gone.  Blarney enjoyed a good spell scoring a goal and a point with a good save too by Jack Barry.   Keith O’Leary back after lengthy and hurling well scored a point.  Then Davy Morrison turned his man, made good ground and lashed in a great goal with Keith and Alan scoring to leave it 2-8 to 1-9 in favour of Blarney at half time.

There was some mighty hurling in the second half.  Our backs done very well to withstand a lot of Blarney pressure as Colm Barry had gone off, but Darragh Spillane moved in full back and done well.  We exchange points and, but Blarney scored a third goal to go.  Barry Murphy and Brian O’Donovan who had taken off the free taking scored from a free and play.  At this stage James Kearney and Peter Roche were doing well around the middle and Murphy had another point but Blarney kept the scoreboard ticking over too.  It was 3-11 to 1-16 in favour of Blarney with fifteen minutes to go in a titanic struggle.  Darren Tobin scored a goal for us as Dunny landed one from play and a sixty-five and James Kearney after a great assist from Barry Murphy showed massive speed and hit over a great score as we came home winners by three points.  Well done lads.

Panel: Jack Barry; Robbie Feeney, Colm Barry, Darragh Spillane, Matthew Rosner; Shane Maroney, Colm Spillane, Peter Roche; James Kearney, Colm McCarthy; Brian O’Donovan, Keith O’Leary, Brian Spillane, Dave Morrison, Barry Murphy, Alan Fenton. Darren Tobin, Ronan Fenton, B Carroll, Stephen Casey, Olan Linehan.

East Cork Junior Hurling League Division Two.

St Ita’s 1-18 Castlelyons 1-15.

We travelled East last Friday evening to a sunny Pilmore to take on St. Ita's in our fifth league game. We went into the game with confidence having won four from four so far in the league, although we were missing a few regulars due to injury and availability. St Ita's started strong going into a three-point lead 0-4 to 0-1. We got back into the game with Darren Tobin in great form and putting four points on the board for us. It was point for point for the rest of the first half, until the St Ita's keeper, Padraig O’Brien put over a free from distance to give them a 0-9 to 0-7 lead at half time.

Our lads started the second half strongly with two points in quick succession from Jack Kenny, and a goal from Jack Cremin put us two points up. This was followed by a fine individual effort from Noel McAuliffe.  Shane Moroney was doing very well on Imokilly player Ciarán O’Brien, and we lead a point with time nearly up.  To St Ita's credit they never gave up and their junior A experience told, as Daniel Hickey scored 1-1 to give them a three-point victory.  We are second in the league table with two games remaining against Fr. O Neills and Carrignavar.

Team: Eoin Barry, Oisin Morrison, Liam Moroney Shaun Lanegan; Shane Flynn, Shane Moroney, Stephen Casey; Darren Tobin (0-7), Noel McAuliffe (0-1); Alan O Regan, Ronan Fenton (0-2), Olan Lenehan (0-1); Mike Griffin, Jack Kenny (0-2), Jack Cremin (1-2).  Subs: Kevin Barry, Declan Morrisson, Darragh Bransfield, Ian O Sullivan, Stephen Rice, Tom O Neill.

Rebel Óg East Division Two Under 14 Championship

Cobh 4 -6 Castlelyons 7-13

Our under fourteens travelled to Cobh for first game in the football round robin. We fielded a young side including five of our under twelve side.  We got on top early with some excellent scores, and giving Cobh limited opportunities with Ewan Mc Carthy and Christopher O Sullivan doing well in defence.  The first fifteen minutes of the game played mainly in the Cobh half of the field. Scores from Ned Condon, Cionnaith Cotter, Ryan Wallace and Alex O Brien gave a healthy lead at the break.

We continue putting on the pressure on in the second half, however Cobh did come back into proceedings and picked off a couple of good scores.  Defence held strong with Fionn O Neill, Carter Clegg and Jack Cronin doing well in the full back line.  We finished strongly, with two more goals to see out a good win.  Well done lads and especially to our five under twelves who all contributed strongly.

Team: Dylan Barrett, Fionn O Neill, Carter Clegg, Tadgh Hickey, Robbie Wallace, Ewan Mc Carthy, Christopher O Sullivan, Ned Condon, Alex O Brien, Ryan Wallace, Cionnaith Cotter, Jack Cronin, Joshua Kinnane, Tom Barry, Cathal Henley, Liam Martin.

Munster Senior Hurling Championship in the boiling heat of the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick.

There was boiling heat in Tús Gaelic Grounds last Sunday with a full house of over 42,000 for the Cork versus Limerick game.  There was a band playing before the game, but their singing cut created little interest with the crowd not even a sing along.  During the National Anthem, superbly sung by Michael Ryan one could feel the heat, tension and excitement of the crowd especially when the players broke away even before it was over. Well, the Limerick roar was mad as their team were on fire and within three minutes, they were a goal and two points up.  This set the tone as Limerick won the day by fifteen points.

This game could well be part of a great trilogy as Cork must now beat Waterford on Sunday to stay in the competition.  Then if victory comes their way its onward to Limerick again to take on the natives in the Munster final and who knows but they could well meet in the All-Ireland final of 2025.  Cork may find this tough going but it can be done and maybe change their song from the ‘Banks’ to what will we do if the kettle boils over what will we do but to fill it again.  Limerick were at their best and Cork had a poor day but with the right temperament and attitude they are superb hurlers and there could be good days on the turnaround.  The reset button comes against Waterford on Sunday and best of luck to the team and management.  Our man Niall O’Leary outstanding all year had to some off injured the last day.  Hopefully he is okay and best of luck Niall.

Rebel Óg East Under 16 Hurling League.

Watergrasshill 2-12 Castlelyons 1-17.

Castlelyons travelled to the ‘Hill on Monday evening last and after a great game they had two points to spare over the locals.  Good to see s few lads back from injury most notably Sam McCarthy who lined out full forward and improving again.  This win leaves the lads midtable, but they will not qualify for the final stages of the league.  The games are over now for a while with full concentration on their school studies.  On resumption we will play St Colemans in the Championship.  Best of luck to all studying for the Junior Certificate.
