Castlelyons Minor Hurlers qualify for County Final.

Castlelyons 4-22 Kildorrery 2-12

This Minor C Grade County Hurling Semi Final was played on a well prepared Fermoy pitch under the watchful eye of Reiteóir Mark Murphy, Bride Rovers, who did a great job and let play flow in a sporting contest.

The fact that we had three lads in their rookie season with the Intermediate team gave us the edge in experience.  We were on top all through as we were strong in defence and had the ability to score any time Kildorrery threatened.  However, there were some intriguing battles early on as our own Keith O Leary had his hands full in James Keating but he done well.  Incidentally, they are both members of Cork development squads as James is on the U16 and Keith on the U17. Our own Alex Henley in the full forward and the Kildorrery full back had some rare ould battles but fair play to Alex he done well and created valuable space as well as scoring a few points himself.  The score at half time was Castlelyons 2-12 Kildorrery 0-9

Niall O Leary had a mighty game scoring 2-11Michael Buckley who started in goal for the injured Conor McCarthy acquitted himself very well especially early in the second half.  Our other backs of Red Walsh, S Moroney and J O Leary done very well all through.  Shane Baragry hurled with heart all through as did the star of the show Niall O Leary who played tremendous stuff and landed some many mighty scores. Mark Spillane, P Varner, N Riordan and Barry Murphy, all good players and did very well and got on the scoreboard.

James Murphy came off the bench to score a great goal and Thomas Stephenson, Jack Ronayne and Cian Donnellan all got valuable game time also.

However, Kildorrery did play a very nice brand of hurling. They had excellent players in James Keating, Darren McNamara and Dylan Kent and all of their players gave it everything.

We do have a few injuries so hopefully they will have cleared up for the Final most notably Niall O Cleary and Barry Murphy and Conor McCarthy

Team: - Michael Buckley, Keith O Leary, Red Walsh, Shane Moroney, Jamie o Leary, Shane Baragry, Niall O Leary, Mark Spillane, Pearse Varner, Niall Riordan, Alex Henley, Barry Murphy.

Subs: - (all got game time) James McCarthy, Thomas Stephenson, Jack Ronayne and Cian Donnellan.

County Minor Hurling Final Castlelyons v Cobh fixed for Castlemartyr.

Castlelyons play Cobh in the County Minor C Grade County Final on this Saturday in Castlemartyr at 2.30 pm. This is the third time that these two teams have met this year with Cobh edging nearer all the time as we were lucky to take a four point victory the last time so we can expect a real tough game.  Hopefully we can come out on top and take the silverware.

We wish all our lads and  Jimmy O Leary, Manager, Shane Hickey, Coach, Ger McCarthy and Dave Hegarty who are doing a great job the very best of luck. Please come along and support the team – Castlelyons Abú

Castlelyons play Mallow in Intermediate Hurling League.

Castlelyons take on Mallow in a very important league game in Castlelyons at 3.30 pm on Sunday.  We had good win over Kanturk in the Championship but we were dominated all through by Ballinhassig in the Quarter Final.  It is interesting that we drew 2-11 apiece with Valley Rovers in the League away but they “Valleys” took down Ballinhassig last Sunday to reach the County Final.

The winners of this game have a great chance of qualifying for the final of the League and we are just one point behind Mallow so a win is imperative.  We had a mixed season to date and could well add a little bit of fire to our game so let’s hope our lads are up for this game especially at home.

Castlelyons host County Intermediate Football Semi Final on Saturday at 5 pm.

Castlelyons host a potential cracker in the County Intermediate Football Semi Final on this Saturday evening at 5 pm as welcome our near neighbours Glanworth and Fermoy.  Both Fermoy and Glanworth are enjoying a good year have the potential to go all the way as its Mayfield awaiting the winners of Kanturk v Cill Na Matra in the other semi final.  Fermoy have some outstanding players and Thomás Clancy, Ruari O Hagan and Ivan O Callaghan will not be found wanting.  Dave Pyne, Thomas Condon and Michael Sheehan are men of heart and class for Glanworth. So all in all  it makes for a great contest and see you there Saturday at five.

Kent Family involvement in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael

Now that one of the greatest days in Castlelyons, the State funeral of Thomas Kent, executed in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising, which took place on Friday last is moving to history we remember of the solemnity, humility and dignity of the occasion, the Kent family and a big thank you to all.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny said in his oration “we need men and women who believe in community, who believe in country and in putting others before themselves”.  This was certainly true of Castlelyons as the place was looking so well on the day.  This was due to hard work by so many and a big thank you to all who helped out both in preparation and on the day.  It shows what can be done so let’s keep this outstanding spirit going in our games too.

The Kent family, Bawnard, Castlelyons had a strong involvement in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael in the early 1900’s.

There was no GAA Club formed in Castlelyons circa1916 or, indeed, for years later although there is anecdotal evidence of games in the area.  However, it is believed that the Kent family had connections with other clubs in the area. Of course, until the 1920s the ‘Athletic’ part of the Association’s remit was almost as important as the Gaelic Games.  The book on the court martials in 1916 refers to Richard Kent as follows: - ‘he had been a fine athlete, holding all-Ireland medals under the GAA for hurdling and hammer-throwing’.  He won many medals and trophies. Indeed, a photo shows him with his medals displayed.

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael at this time, as well as staging Gaelic games, was also the principal organising body for nationalist athletes in the country for what we would nowadays call ‘track and field’ events (also cycling, greyhound racing and many other sports that have long since come under the auspices of their own governing bodies) – so it would have been at these ‘meets’ that the brothers competed and the medals were won.

The late Thomas Kent (nephew) also won an East Cork hurling medal in 1955 with Castlelyons.
