U 21 Hurlers qualify fo East Cork Final.

Castlelyons 2-21 Cloyne 2-13

We played Cloyne in the Semi final of the East Cork Oil U21 B Hurling Championship on Wednesday last in Killeagh. The Pitch was immaculate which resulted in a fine open match with good scores from each side. Playing with the wind we started well and with points from Anto Spillane, Niall O Leary and Tom Carroll and took a strong early lead.

We maintained our lead through good play from our full back line of Shane Fenton, Declan Varner and Coran Lawlor which set up scores for Ronan O Regan, Alan Fenton and Anto Spillane. Cloyne got the first goal of the match to reduce our lead but two goals from Alan Fenton, who is lethal on the half chance, left us leading at half time by 2-12 to 1-7.

Colm O Neill makes a rousing clearance watched by Tom Carroll and Coran LawlorCloyne playing with the wind in the second half got the first three points but we maintained our lead through points from Anto Spillane and Alan Fenton. Cloyne were on top for the next while and scored a goal to reduce our lead and but for a great tackle by Colm O Neill could have got another one.

Ronan Bransfield left the field with a nasty hand injury and we wish him well as he recovers with this. His replacement Shane Hickey scored our last point to leave us winners on a score of 2-21 to 2-13. We now go on to play Watergrasshill in the final which will probably take place in early September.

There were so many heroes in this game but as the year moves on it is great to see Anto Spillane in such good for with nine points from play. Alan Fenton continue to show his opportunism around the square as he bagged two more goals and finally Declan Varner continues to improve with every game.

This team is showing the kind of class matched with spirit which we need to drive on and best of luck now to the lads in the final versus the ‘Hill on a date to be arranged.  Well done and the best of luck to Manager Mick Spillane and his selectors and all the lads.

Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship – Saturday 15th August.

Castlelyons 1-12 Ballinhassig 4-17

Our County Quarter Final match against Ballinhassig, played in Pairc Uí Rinn, was somewhat disappointing with Ballinhassig running out easy winners in the end. After a good first round win against Kanturk on May 16th hopes were high heading into this match especially having done well the last few years.  Ballinhassig of course had their own ideas as they are hoping to make it back to the senior ranks again this year and were disappointed with their display last year.  Just think about it they also went to the County Junior Final last year so they had many troops at their disposal.

Phillip Mahon who was a powerhouse all through in the PIH Game v Ballinhassig. We started well and won some good ball and took the lead with a 2nd minute free. Teams were level after ten minutes at three points each with points from Aidan O Sullivan and Anto Spillane when Ballinhassig got in for their first goal land a fortuitous one it was. Ml Spillane and Anto Spillane both scored points to draw us level before Ronan Bransfield gave us the lead with a good point.

Ballinhassig again goaled against the run of play to take the lead and added a few more points to their tally with Anto Spillane replying with two points to leave Ballinhassig leading at half time by 2-6 to 0-9.

Ballinhassig started the 2nd half very strongly and scored the first 4 points to take a firm grip on the game and when they added a 3rd goal they had the game won. Our lads, even though outplayed, still tried their best and we had points from Jamie O Leary and Anto Spillane with a late goal from Colm Spillane being our last score.

The usual post mortem bring out the “what might have beens” and, of course the system was bandied about.  It was interesting that the “system” was tried in the first half at different times by both times but when Castlelyons reduced tactics in the second half the pressure on the backs was serious.

It was good to see Colm Spillane back to top county form again as he gave a great display all through and, of course; Phillip Mahon who despite shipping a few heavy tackles showed great heart and championship fighting qualities.

Our lads are young and going so well again in the Under 21 this year.  In fact they had a tough game against Carrigtwohill just a few days beforehand which may have taken a bit out of them as the game was 0-9 each ten minutes into the second half.  We missed older soldiers, Ciarán McGann (cruciate), Barry O Connell (hand injury) and Barry Fitzgerald (retirement) from last year as they provided both leadership and experience..

However, we are on the road to the rising again as we have a very nice U21 Panel and no doubt Mick Spillane and his management team will keep them going and we wish them well.

Thanks to everyone involved all year with the Intermediate team, especially Dave Hoare and his management team to players to backroom staff for the effort put in but with two league games still to play and the chance of qualifying for the final still there our season is not over yet.

Team: - J Barry, B Carroll, C Barry, T Carroll, L Sexton, C Spillane (1-01), P Mahon, R Feeney, A O Sullivan (0-1), N O Leary, A Spillane (0-6, 4f), R Bransfield (0-1), A Fenton, S Moroney, M Spillane (0-1).

Subs Used: - T McCarthy, J O Leary (0-01), K O Leary.

Defeat for Junior B Hurlers in the Championship on Sunday 16th August.

Castlelyons 1-06 Sarsfields 0-20

We travelled to Rathcormac on Sunday morning to take on Sarsfields in the quarter final of the East Cork Junior B hurling championship. We were tight on numbers for this match having lost some players to the Premier Intermediate team the evening before.

We started well and led by 5pt to 1 after 15 mins with points from Ciarán McGann, Brian O Donovan and Ronan O Regan however from here on Sarsfields began to dominate and scored the next 6 points to take a 2 point lead. We got a bit of luck when a long range free from Ciarán McGann went all the way to the Sarsfields net to give us back the lead.  However, Sarsfields scored again to level the match at half time 1-05 to 0-08.

Unfortunately, we looked jaded in the second half as we were dominated and we had no answer to Sarsfields play as the added on 11 points to their total to run out convincing winners on a score of 1-06 to 0-20.

Thanks to Donal Barry, Ned Fitzgerald, James Maye and Michael O Donovan for their effort in organising the team during the year.  This is the real bread and butter stuff as anyone you nurture either out of injury or up a standard in hurling move on to the top team.  Also we missed Eoin Barry, Cian O Leary, Eoin Maye and Darren Tobin who moved overseas for the summer – all good men who may be part of the Intermediate team also but would give us more numbers.

Team: -  S O Sullivan, L Moroney, D Varner, M Murphy, C Lawlor, D Sexton, C O Neill, N McAuliffe, B (Dunny) O Donovan (0-1), A O Regan, C McGann (1-4,1-3f), C Cotter, R O Regan (0-1), B O Donovan, M J Dorgan.

Subs: - S Fenton, D Beausang, P O Regan.
