Brave show for Junior B Hurlers not enough

Castlelyons 0-11   Ballinacurra 0-13

We were defeated by Ballinacurra in the first round of the East Cork Junior B hurling Championship last Saturday night on an immaculate pitch in Castlemartyr. A repeat of last year’s epic encounter there were no goals for either side this time as both defences were very solid throughout the game.

Declan Sexton Sexton and Declan Varner defending wellWe played with the wind in the first half we had the perfect start when Chris Cotter scored a long range point from midfield. Both sides found scoring from play difficult but Michael Spillane was spot on with four long range frees and Ronan Fenton had a late point to leave Ballinacurra leading at half time by 0-8 to 0-6.

Second half was again very even with some great performances from our back lines, particularly Barry O Connell and Declan Varner.  Shane O Sullivan pulled off a great save to deny Ballinacurra a certain goal and Michael Spillane added three more points from frees but we could not reduce Ballinacurra's lead.

Phillip Mahon, who put in a great performance all through, scored a great point to reduce the deficit to one point but Ballinacurra added two more points to extend their lead. With time almost up Castlelyons could not get in for the goal we required with a point from M Spillane being the last score of the match.

This was a good effort by all concerned and it must be said that our men on the line, Donal Barry, Ned Fitzgerald, Michael O Donovan and James Maye got the best out of the lads.  We have another chance as we now play Erin’s Own in Round Two and I have no doubt there is more in the tank.

Team: -  Shane O Sullivan, Liam Moroney, Barry O Connell, Mark Murphy, Colm O Neill, Declan Varner, Shane Fenton, Declan Sexton, Chris Cotter (0-1), Brian O Donovan, Phillip Mahon (0-1), Mark Spillane (0-8,7f), Brian O Donovan, Ronan Fenton (0-1), Michael John Dorgan.

Subs: -  Noel McAuliffe, Ciaran McGann, Shane Bargery, David Kenny, David Beausang.

Premier Intermediate Hurling.

The draw for Round 4 of the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship took place on Tuesday night and for the third year running we got a bye and are now in the Quarter Final.  However, we are drawn against many punters favourite to win the Premiership this year, namely, Ballinhassig.

They are in Division One of the League and at mid table.  In fact, they recorded a facile victory over us last year in Rathcormac in the League.  They had a big win over Carrigaline in the first round of this year’s Championship winning by 4-16 to 2-12.  No doubt will be expecting to repeat the dose against us so we must be on top of our game to have any chance.  But this is the Championship and lads go for it.

Munster Minor Hurling Championship Cork v Limerick on this Thursday evening.

We wish Niall O Leary the very best, who is on the Cork minor hurling panel for the Munster Minor Semi Final against Limerick in Limerick on Thursday night 2nd July.  Having already defeated Limerick in Páirc Uí Rinn we now have to do it all over again.  So Denis Ring Manager and his team have a tough task.  Niall is showing great for so hopefully the lads will do the business.
