East Cork J2HC v Ballinacurra this weekend

Junior 2 Hurling Challenge B Challenge v Watergrasshill

We played Watergrasshill in a challenge match last Tuesday night in Castlelyons.  This was an important preparation game for the forthcoming championship outing with Ballinacurra this coming Saturday evening in Killeagh at 7 pm. We had a very under strength outfit due to exams, injuries and holidays. Watergrasshill ran out easy winners on the night but our lads made a brave effort.

Ciaran McGann back in action after cruciate operationIt was great to have Ciarán McGann return to action after a horrific cruciate injury in July ’14.  We have another outing against Araglen on this Tuesday night in Castlelyons and with exams finished and hopefully most of the injuries cleared up we will have a strong panel available.

If we have a full turn out of players the Management team of Donal Barry, Ned Fitzgerald, James Maye and Coach Michael O Donovan will have a serious paper to set out to ensure a winning performance on the luscious grass of Killeagh.  Best of luck to players and management and let’s have some support in Killeagh on Saturday evening. Remember it was a cracker last year.

Team v Watergrasshill: -  D Kenny, A Henley, M Murphy, D Beausang, S Bargery, C O Neill, L Moroney, B O Donovan, C McGann, M Spillane, C Cotter, B O Donovan, A O Regan, S O Sullivan, M J Dorgan,

Premier Intermediate Hurling Challenge

Castlelyons 2-19 Milford 0-20

We played a challenge match against Milford on Friday night in Castlelyons. We were missing many regulars but this in turn gave game time to other panel members and allowed management the opportunity to see everyone in action. This turned out to be a good game. Castlelyons hurled well and led throughout.

We were leading by four points at half time. in at half time.  On the resumption we continued good form.  Phillip Mahon scored a good goal.  However, the score of the evening was superbly finished by Brian O Donovan.  A long ball in was broken down by Michael Spillane to the path of “Dunny” who first timed a beauty to the net.  Dunny, it must be said is improving with every game this year.  We ran out winners on a score of 2-19 to 0-20 after a highly competitive outing.

The draw for Round 4 of the PIH Championship will take place next week and until then it is difficult for management to arrange league matches until our next round opposition is known.

Team: - J Barry, B Carroll, C Barry, M Murphy, P Mahon (1-2), T Carroll, C O Neill, R Feeney, A O Sullivan (0-5), B O Donovan (1-1), R Bransfield (0-3), S Moroney (0-2), M Spillane (0-3, 1f), T McCarthy (0-1), M J Dorgan (0-3).

Subs: - S O Sullivan, D Kenny (0-1), D Beausang.

Congratulations to our Senior Hurlers – Imokilly v UCC

Castlelyons was well represented on Monday evening in the Cork SHC Imokilly v UCC.  Imokilly claimed the day on a 0-20 to 0-17.  Colm Barry at full back and Tom Carroll in the corner with Captain Barra O Tuama in the other corner were outstanding against more illustrious opponents.  Aidan O Sullivan at midfield had one of his best evenings against none other than current Waterford senior star Tom Devine.

Willie Leahy of Aghada landed five points from play.  Paudie O Sullivan did well for Imokilly and cut a mighty sideline over at a vital time only to be bettered by Imokilly and Cork minor goalie, Declan Dalton who landed a point from a 100 metre free.  This young goalie has some slap of a ball.

For UCC our own Jack Barry looked class and played well in goal.  His clearances were excellent and his puck outs radar like as he pinged forty metre stuff at times when Imokilly were slack in marking.  He saved well from Aidan O Sullivan after made a great run through the middle.

Well done to Imokilly who are well organised this year under Coach Fergal Condon and they will have no fear entering the next round.

New Regulation - Permission to Play Challenge Games

It is accepted that prior permission must be requested by clubs to play and participate in Challenge Games.  Indeed, for many years, it is the responsibility of the Club organising the Challenge Game to request approval, in writing, to the appropriate authority and in most cases unless outside the county it was two day notification and worked very well.

However, recently this was changed to seven clear days by direction. This is despite the fact that the Association is facilitated by staff and email rather than snail mail is the order of the day.  Then, obviously through club pressure it was reduced to four days.  But the  rationale of even four days is not understood.

Clubs are going about their business during summer time trying to do their very best with officers administrating in a voluntary capacity.  The life blood of the Association is to play and enjoy games and the two day rule was honoured and lasted down the years.

Our Junior 2 Game v Araglen in Castlelyons on Tuesday evening is now refused as a result of this new regulation as the notice was not given in four days prior.  Maybe someone will see common sense and allow it be played.
