Castlelyons advance in Premier Intermediate Championship

Castlelyons 1-16 Kanturk 1-13

Castlelyons and Kanturk played out an exciting Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship match in Castletownroche on Sunday evening last. Our hurling was a little bit nervous and we off target in our shooting early on which led to Kanturk having the best of the exchanges and leading by a goal at half time.

Robbie Feeney had our first point of the match and Anto Spillane added another to leave sides level at two points each after ten minutes. Kanturk scored a goal at this stage to take a lead that they held until half time. Niall O Leary and Alan Fenton added our next points to keep us in touch.  Our defence worked very hard as the matching worked very well.

Leo Sexton had an outstanding game on Aidan Walsh in the PIHCLeo Sexton had picked up the Cork Star Aidan Walsh and for twenty minutes all puck outs rained down on top of them from Anthony Nash but Sexton was well up for it and hurled mighty and the goalie had to change with these lauded puck outs.  The Cork star did manage some points and did show some class at times but our man hurled a pile of ball.  Indeed, Colm Spillane and Keith O Leary were on top and they need to be as the turnovers by Kanturk were equally good as they dominated our forwards for a while. Ronan Bransfield, at centre forward hurled his heart out on Darragh Brown, a Cork panelist, but we did find scores heard to come by. Overall, it was a titanic struggle but of course Kanturk bagged that goal early on. However, Colm Spillane, back to great form, scored two long range frees and Shane Moroney scored the last point of the half to leave Kanturk leading at half time by 1-7 to 0-7.

We started the second half very well with Tom Carroll coming through the centre to score a good point.  Indeed Tom Carroll and Robbie Feeney hurled well at midfield especially in the second half. Timmy McCarthy and Aidan O Sullivan came off the bench with twenty minutes left and there was immediate excitement in the Castlelyons supporters.  Aidan who was out injured with a while but had shown great early form Imokilly this year made immediate impact with a mighty rousing point.  We began to cut into Kanturk’s lead and now our full back line of Brian Carroll, Colm Barry and Cian O Leary playing well we began to dominate. Timmy McCarthy, as he has done so often in the past, caused serious trouble in the Kanturk defence with his unselfish running making space.

It paid off because a long ball in was controlled well by Anto Spillane who parted to our goal scorer supreme Alan Fenton.  Alan raced through and beat some strong tackles, focused and drove a bullet passed Anthony Nash to score a great goal to give us the lead for the first time.  This followed by a fantastic point from Aidan O Sullivan as he cut through with speed. We had points from Colm Spillane and Anto Spillane we were three points ahead with time almost up but Kanturk pressed hard all the time. Young Jack Barry, UCC and U21 Cork panelist, and a giant in every sense of the word pulled off a great save from one of Anthony Nash's pile driving frees.

Then with the game in the melting pot and Castlelyons on a dangerous two point lead Timmy McCarthy showed how class is permanent and form temporary as he won the dirty ball turned and made a mighty run through the middle.  He parted magnificently to 17 year old Keith O Leary who slotted over a beauty.  What a man Timmy who won an All Ireland Minor Hurling Medal back in 1995 a few years before Keith was born – some service to club and county. This was the last score of a pulsating half and Castlelyons won on a score of 1-16 to 1-13.

Mentors - Shane Hickey and Sean KennyCongratulations to all the Lads and Management on a good all round performance and considering all our injury problems leading into the match it was great to get the win which was very important for the team as it guarantees Premier Intermediate status for next year.  However, there is a lot of work and let’s give the commitment and we could be challengers again for the title this year.

Best wishes to Lorcán McLaughlin, Kanturk and Cork who received an unfortunate injury during the game. Lorcán a consistent Cork Star was a serious loss to Kanturk and now seems doubtful for the Cork v Waterford game.  This is a serious blow to the man himself, Cork and his club so we wish him the very best in recovery.
