Footballers exit East Cork Junior A Championship.

Castlelyons 0-4 Carrig na bhFear 2-13

We made a tame exit from this year’s East Cork Junior A Football Championship in Lisgoold last Saturday night.  However, we made a great start and few would have predicted such a turnabout.

Both teams exchanged wides early on but Castlelyons, who were playing into the town end, had the upper hand early on.  Tom Carroll who had a mighty game passed to Darragh Lawlor who shot narrowly wide on six minutes.  Shane O Sullivan showed well for the ball and got good possession and was fouled and Ronan Fenton pointed the resultant free on eight minutes.  Then on nine minutes Alan Fenton passed to Jack Barry who put over a mighty in swinger of a point.  A minute later Jack Barry intercepted and on a one two with Alan Fenton he scored another good point.  It was getting better and on thirteen minutes high fielding by Shane Moroney and good work by Eoin Maye and Darragh Lawlor resulted in a good Lawlor point.  A good Jack Barry attack resulted in a free to us again on fifteen minutes but Ronan Fenton was unlucky as his shot was narrowly wide.  We were on top all over the place, leading by four points to no score and looking good.

Then strangely we fell back in defence as Carrignabhfear came at us.  Brian Carroll made a great intercept and cleared but they came back again.  We were very exposed as their No 7 banged in a great goal.  This upset us both in our game and strangely in our mind.  We argued a little too much with the Referee in different parts of the field and this resulted in the ball being brought forward at times, yellow cards at times, and warnings all over the place.  Carrignabhfear got right back in the game and led at half time by 2-4 to 0-4.

Carrig now playing into the town end with the breeze for the second half added 0-9 to their tally and we failed to raise a flag.  Carrig had a facile victory in the end.

C Spillane, R Bransfield and L Sexton seen her in mighty action in the County Final but all three were injured for Saturday nights gameThis was a tame exit to the championship especially ally as we took the County B Championship glory last year.  Our Manager Mick Spillane and Selectors Michael Barrett and Ciarán McGann must be thanked for their endeavor and the players who played on the night certainly did their best.  We had a number of injuries including heavy hitters Leo Sexton and Colm Spillane, with Ronan Bransfield serving a match suspension and our current senior inter county star and others also injured. It is important that we ‘circle the wagons’ for the hurling Championship now and give it all as holly as â€˜attitude is equally important as ability’, also, of course we have U21 B football championship left so best of luck to all in the weeks ahead.

Team: -  Killian Smith, Brian Carroll, Cian O Leary, Liam Moroney, Eoin Maye, Tom Carroll, Declan Varner, Coran Lawlor, Shane Moroney, Jack  Barry (0-2), Darragh Lawlor (0-1), Ronan Fenton (0-1), Shane O Sullivan, Alan Fenton, Ronan Feeney.

Subs: - Noel McAuliffe, Brian O Donovan.

Congratulations.

To Niall O Leary who played for Cork minor hurlers and had a great outing in their Championship victory over Limerick last week.

Imokilly Senior Hurlers advance in Championship.

Cork U21 and Intermediate Star Colm Barry - Hamstring InjuryImokilly defeated Avondhu in a lively game in Brian Dillon’s Grounds last night on the score of 3-21 to 3-18.  Colm Barry lined out at full back and Tom Carroll in the corner with Shane Moroney and Aidan O Sullivan on the subs bench.  Colm suffered a hamstring injury and had to retire early though doing well.  Tom Carroll went on to have a mighty game at corner back.

This was a good win with serious commitment by all players and panel and the East Cork Board.  The next outing will be against UCC or CIT in June.  We wish Colm Barry a speedy recovery.

Note: - It was most disappointing that there was no Programme available for supporters at this game, or, indeed, any public announcement. This is just not good enough for a County Senior Hurling Championship game and paying supporters or others such as county selectors, etc should be given a programme.  After all there are full instructions and a template on the Cork Website.
