Intermediate Hurling League Division 2

Watergrasshill 0-18 Castlelyons 2-18

Castlelyons were in league action on Saturday evening when we played away to Watergrasshill. This turned out to be a fine open game with good scores on both sides with Castlelyons holding on to their half time lead to win by 2 goals which was the same winning margin when we played them in the PIH championship last June. Ml Spillane and Ronan Bransfield had our first scores to take a lead that we held until the end of the match. Aidan O Sullivan put over two outstanding long range frees to leave the scores 0-04 to 0-03 after ten minutes then a point from Jamie O Leary and two in a row from Darragh Lawlor left us four points up after 15 minutes. Alan Fenton hit a right patch to put over the next three points to put us in the driving seat. We played some great hurling with good ball coming out of defence and great interplay between midfield and forwards. Aidan O Sullivan with another monster of a free and Ronan Bransfield both scored points but in the last ten minutes.

However, our backs came under pressure and conceded some easy frees five in a row in fact.  Conceding frees like this with a sharpshooter like Shane O Regan around was serious stuff as the Hill man put over five points in a row. However we finished the half with a gem of a goal. Tom Carroll drove in a high ball to Shane Moroney, who was having a right battle with a full back of quality in Noel O Riordan.  Moroney was ready and rose for it to make a fine catch above his man.  He turned and made ground to bang in a great goal.  Moroney deserved this as he sprayed about a lot of unselfish passes earlier under pressure as there was nothing soft in the Hill back line.  This left us leading by 1–12 to 0-9 at half time.

Tough Stuff - No passing TommyWe started the second half brightly with Shane Moroney again motoring well getting the first point of the half.  Robbie Feeney gave a good pass to Aidan O Sullivan and he cut through the middle with massive speed for a great goal.  We were now well ahead and playing well. We again conceded a lot of frees in this half which kept Watergrasshill in the match and we had points from Aidan O Sullivan , Ronan Bransfield and Alan Fenton to close out the match and win on a score of 2-18 to 0-18.

This was a good performance by the lads as the Hill gave it everything too and scored eighteen points.  It was mighty to see some of our long term injured back, especially Colm Spillane and Brian Carroll and Phillip Mahon although Colm Barry and Leo Sexton have troublesome injuries making a return in this match and with championship just six weeks away confidence is building and a good team is taking shape.  Also, we are now making our way up the League table. Whatever about aggression or skill which must dealt with in coaching the attitude of players is vital and all the lads showed up well in this department the last night especially with some of our younger players.

Junior B Hurling

Brian O Donovan on the attackWe played St Ita’s in a Junior B challenge match in Castlelyons on Bank Holiday Monday. This was their first match of the season as a team and for some players their first game of the year but the training that they are doing showed as we were too strong for St Ita’s and ran out convincing winners. Great to see Timmy McCarthy and Barry O Connell setting the tone for our younger players and no doubt we will have a good year again this year.

The East Cork Junior B league programme will be starting in the next few weeks so keep up the training as this team has great potential.

Team: - D Kenny, M Murphy, B O Connell, L Moroney, MF Dorgan, D Sexton, S Fenton, E Maye, R Feeney, J O Leary, R Fenton, J Barry, MJ Dorgan, T McCarthy, A O Regan.

Subs: - C Cotter, E Barry, B O Donovan, C O Neill, D Beausang.

Munster Minor Hurling Semi Final.
