U16 Rebel Óg Eastern A Grade Hurling League

Castlelyons 3-11: Cobh 0-15

Last Monday night our U16 Hurlers played Cobh in the 1st round of the U16 A Grade Hurling League

On a mild but extremely windy night in Castlelyons both teams served up a hard fought and very exciting game of hurling with the Castlelyons lads deservedly coming out on top after a fine hours hurling.

Cobh started strong in the first half and aided by the wind and they had 3 points on the scoreboard before Mark Spillane got Castlelyons first score in the 6th minute. Cobh had the lion’s share of possession in the first and they picked off some fine long range points. By the 20th minute Cobh were 5 points ahead and Castlelyons lads were under some pressure.

However in the 22nd minute Conor McCarthy cleared a Cobh attack out to Seamus Moroney. Seamus drove it forward and Mark Spillane gathered possession and ran though the centre where he off loaded to Barry Murphy for an excellent team goal. This score brought Castlelyons back into the game when it seemed to be slipping away from them. Other scores in this half for Castlelyons, all points,  came from Barry Murphy (2), Ian Riordan(1) , Michael Buckley (1) and James Kearney (1)  At half time Cobh led by a single point 0-11 to 1-07.

The second half saw both teams go toe to toe for the full 30 minutes in what was a tough but fair encounter.  Castlelyons got an early goal, courtesy of Barry Murphy, which put them into a two point lead and after this were never headed again. All the lads played well in the second half in what was always a close and exciting game.

In the end Castlelyons had a 5 point advantage over Cobh which was probably a fair reflection on the nights hurling and a satisfactory start to their league campaign for Castlelyons. Other scores in the second half for Castlelyons were Barry Murphy, Points Barry Murphy, David Morrison, Mark Spillane .
