Hurling Season starts in Earnest 2015-03-04 09:35:00

Castlelyons 2-10; Carrigaline 1-21

We played our first hurling league game h of the year when we played Carrigaline on Sunday afternoon at home. This match was due to be played in Carrigaline but due to their pitch being unavailable the venue was changed to Castlelyons.

Cian O Leary defending well against CarrigalineCarrigaline were first to score and led by two points after five mins. Mike Spillane replied with two points from frees and teams were level after ten mins. Carrigaline scored the next four points to build up a lead with Castlelyons replying with points from Alan Fenton and Darragh Lawlor. Carrigaline were dominating play at this stage and took a seven point lead until a goal from Alan Fenton and two points from frees by Mike Spillane cut the deficit to two  points at half time to leave the score Castlelyons 1- 6 Carrigaline 0-11

The second half continued in the same form with Carrigaline stronger in many areas and they added 1- 3 to their score in the first fifteen mins. Castlelyons had two pointed frees from Mike Spillane but we were struggling to keep with them. Alan Fenton and Anto Spillane added a point each before a nice goal from Alan Fenton gave us hope of a comeback. However, this was our last score and Carrigaline added two late points to win on a score of 1-21 to 2-10.

A disappointing result but great effort from everyone considering we have only started back training and have very little hurling training done.  We do have many players who were not available due to injury, in particular Colm Barry and Phillip Mahon in the shorter and Colm Spillane and Ciarán McGann longer term.  So let’s hope these injuries clear up.

Of course, Timmy McCarthy, Barry Fitzgerald and Barry O Connell, great strong hurling warriors of many a battle have retired.  They carved out a lot of success and are  part of the folklore of our Club so we wish them well and maybe we could have a ‘Paul Galvin’ as we could use any of them before the year is out.

The league continues next weekend when we are away to Valley Rovers in Brinny.

U 21 Football

We play Glenbower Rovers on Friday night next in the semi final of the East Cork U 21 B football championship. After a good victory over St Catherines in the quarter final we look forward to this match and hopefully can make it to the final.

Scór Sinsir.

Best wishes to Stacey Cronin in the Scór Sinsir County Final The County Final of Scór Sinsir will take place in the Eire Óg Pavilion on Sunday evening the 8th of March at 6 pm.  Our own Stacey Cronin representing the Camogie Club will take part in the Solo Singing as she qualified from Imokilly.  She is an outstanding performer and we wish her well.  Many great singers have taken part in Scór over the years and the great Tommy Fleming was a national Scór winner some years ago.  We would appreciate good support for Stacey and overall a great night is assured with many events.

Congratulations

Well done to Eoin O Leary who managed Trinity College to victory over Queens University in the Ryan Cup which was played in Limerick on Sat last before the Fitzgibbon Cup final. This was their first ever victory at this level having been defeated in the final last year.
