Castlelyons move on in East Cork JBFC 2014-09-30 00:11:00

Castlelyons 2-15; Carrigtwohill 0-02

Castlelyons played the 1st round of the East Cork Junior B Football Championship last Friday night when we played Carrigtwohill in Carrigtwohill. As the score line would suggest this was a very one sided game with Castlelyons completely dominant against what was Carrigtwohill's second football team.

After a lot of missed chances Robert Feeney had our first point after ten mins and with more points from Timmy McCarthy and Tom Carroll we led by three points after fifteen mins. Shane O Sullivan and Timmy McCarthy both scored well worked goals in the first half and with points from Eoin Maye, Shane Moroney and Ronan Fenton we led at half time by 2-06.

Second half was a copy of the first with our defence , superbly led by Barry O Connell and Colm Barry, well on top and supplying great ball for Tom Carroll and Eoin Maye to attack from deep. Alan Fenton, Tom Carroll, Ronan Fenton, Ronan Bransfield Shane O Sullivan and Colm Barry all scored points in this half as we ran out winners on a score of 2-15 to 0-02.

This was a satisfying result but it leaves plenty to work on before our next game which should be in two weeks time.

Cork v Kilkenny All Ireland Final 1999.

This year’s All Ireland Hurling Replay Programme carried some interesting stuff and one article set out the top scorers in All Ireland Finals over the last 25 years.

Final Top Scorers - last 25 years.Sure enough our own Timmy McCarthy was a joint leading scorer that day on 0 – 3 sharing it

with Joe Deane and Seanie McGrath in the 1999 All Ireland Final as a very young Cork team beat Kilkenny for the first time since 1978.

Sunday 12 September, 1999 was a wet day and the game was a dour, tough struggle with Cork down a point in a low scoring first half 0 - 5 to 0 – 4. Cork upped the tempo in the second half and held on for a heroic 0 - 13 to 0- 12 victory.  A young Timmy McCarthy was one of the heroes that day and the great Jimmy Barry Murphy the Manager. A wish -  lets get back there again!
