Congrats to Castlelyons Under 16 Camogie team winners of the County B League Plate.

Castlelyons Under 16 camogie team travelled down to Tracton to play the home team in this Plate final as a neutral venue was not available and we loss the toss for home advantage

The pitch was in excellent condition and the sun came out to make it ideal for a game of camogie.  We had the better start but only led by a point at the first water break.  It was all square at half time with the score 1-5 each. The 3rd quarter belonged to Tracton with our defence under constant pressure. At the last water break Tracton led by 6 points and it was looking ominous for Castlelyons. But our girls never gave up and kept working hard to reduce the deficit and scored a goal and a point in the closing minutes put us a point ahead with normal time up. Tracton had time for one last effort, but it failed to hit the target. The final whistle was greeted with huge cheers from the Castlelyons team and supporters.

Thanks to Tracton for a sporting game, to referee Brian Barrett of Nemo for officiating and Liam Ryan from the county board for organising and presenting the trophy on the day.  It was back to Castlelyons then for a celebratory drive by as all the locals were out in support of a great young team. Congrats to the girls and to their management team of Brendan Hallihan, Rachel Murphy, Bríd O’Riordan and Michelle Griffin.

Castlelyons to play Ballinhassig in the County PIHC semi-final.

Castlelyons are now pencilled in to meet Ballinhassig in the County Intermediate Premier hurling semi-final on Sunday 14.11.21 at 2pm in Páirc Uí Rinn. Ballinhassig tore Carrigaline apart with three late goals in the quarter final of the premier intermediate championship on Sunday last. Carrigaline were coasting and four points up heading into the final quarter even though they had to play without one of their best men, David Griffin who was injured. However, they left the back door open and three shots from Ballinhassig wound up in the net winning 3-14 to 1-10. They have several crafty experienced hurlers the like the Collins brothers, Fintan O Leary, Evan Cullinane, Eddie Finn and Cahal Desmond so we will have to be at our best to stay with them. Valley Rovers have also qualified to played Courcey Rovers in the other semi-final by virtue of a well merited win over a fancied Kilworth side. Our lads are training well but hazardous weather conditions interrupted this weekend’s activity. Hopefully there are brighter evenings on the way.

Congratulations to St Ita’s who finally reached the promised land.

St Ita’s finally defeated a gallant Erins Own side 1-14 to 1-5 in the Jamesy Kelleher Memorial Park, Dungourney on Sunday to win the East Cork Junior A Championship for the first time. The clocks had just gone back to signal in the winter.  The weather matched it to as was wet and windy during most of the game, but the sun shone bright as St Ita legend Sheamie Harnedy hoisted the Jamesy Kelleher cup to celebratory supporters.  Ciarán O Brien was a powerhouse at centre back for St Ita’s with Harnedy putting over five of his six-point haul in the second half as they all hurdled well with the aid of the breeze. Sheamie Harnedy, his dad, Sean and the O’Brien brothers are well known to our lads here in Castlelyons as many played together on the now famous three in a row SHC winning Imokilly team.

The hosts the Dungourney GAA Club led by their chairperson, Orla Kelleher, had everything in top shape, the new facilities with the covered in Alley, upstairs meeting rooms and kitchen in full go, the pitch was mighty, the temporary metal roadway laid to facilitate parking was so effective and, as they say, “wouldn’t doubt you”, the refreshments were excellent too. Fr O’Neills were honoured as the Jubilee team having defeated Castlelyons in 1991 final

Friends of Dean and Padraig Group head indoors for the winter.

Due to the colder and wetter day of wintertime the recently formed Friends of Dean and Padraig Group are now heading indoors after a few months of weekly fun and games in Páirc an tAthair Peadar. The Group will now have a weekly evening of entertainment and games in the Community Centre for the next three months and, indeed, they have a few other activities and outings arranged during the winter as well.

GAA for all in Castlelyons.

In the coming weeks the Friends of Dean and Padraig Group will meet with the GAA to formalise a model of inclusion. The GAA for All is a recent family of initiatives in the GAA encompassing Wheelchair Hurling and Camogie, Football for all, Fun and Run, “All Star” Inclusive clubs, Cúl 4 All / Cúl Eile Camps, and intercultural activities. The GAA has seen a rise in the types of models for inclusion for example, assistant program where GAA coaches and local sport partnerships work together.

Castlelyons GAA held a very successful Cúl Eile Camp this year with very good numbers and great interest. This type of Camp was possible due to the great assistance given by many young teachers, playing members and young caring members of our Club. It is hoped to hold a GAA Event for all in Páirc Uí Chaoimh during 2022 but details have not yet been worked out and no doubt Castlelyons Group Friends of Dean and Padraig will be interested too as it should be a great outing.

Santa Claus paying two big visits to Castlelyons, Thursday 2.12. and Sunday 15.12.21

Santa is coming to the Abbey Bar to meet the Friends of Dean and Padraig Group on 2.12.21. The children will be able to meet Santa between 3pm to 5.30pm and 5pm to 7.30pm. This should be a very exciting evening with Santa about the place and a lot of surprises as well. Great credit to proprietors Jim and Aileen McMurtry who are hosting Santa. Then on Sunday December 5th Santa and Mrs Clause will be coming for a second time with presents for the children all and some of their Elves and helpers are coming with as well. Santa will have an open-air Santa’s Grotto in Fr. Ferris Community Park, Castlelyons.

There will be some fun and excitement with Storytellers, Bakers, Elves working, A Magical Puppet Band, Paddy Pixie the Postmaster, A Musical Penguin, Farrier Making Shoes for Rudolph, and “A MAGIC POSTBOX” you will have to see this to believe it, post your letter and it disappears to the North Pole. There will be a special Elf Photographer for that all important digital photo with Santa. There will be some refreshments and even Mammy & Daddy can enjoy some mulled wine along with some other food & drink options. There is an online booking system available on the Castlelyons Parish Facebook so book early.

It’s run “Run your Wife in the New Year”.

Local director and producer Donal Howard is preparing some special entertainment as his group are rehearsing the play “Run for you Wife” for the last two weekends of January 22. Donal is producing this as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Community Centre in Castlelyons. He has a cast of eight and that includes five males and three females from the locality, including a Cork hurler. Donal is very excited about this adult British comedy as the story is about a London cab driver with two wives, two lives and a very precisely planned schedule for juggling them both, with one wife at a home in Streatham and another nearby at a home in Wimbledon.

There’s right trouble when this fellow is mugged one night and winds up in hospital. His two addresses come to light in the hospital causing both the Streatham and Wimbledon police to investigate his mugging. His cosy set up is destroyed and he becomes hopelessly entangled in trying to explain himself to his two wives and two suspicious police officers. The police get a bit of help in the case too. All in all, there is a right bit of pressure and good humour in the Play which is pencilled in for the last two weeks in January.

Castlelyons GAA weekly Lotto Results Monday 1.11.21. 

This week’s draw was held Monday 1.11.21 and the numbers drawn were 10, 13, 15, and 18. There was no winner, and the Jackpot is now at €17,400. Series of Teen Fit Classes in the Community Centre.

Keith O’Leary and Cáit McCarthy will be running a series of teen fit classes commencing on Monday 8.11.21 in Castlelyons Community Centre. These classes are timed 6.30pm-7.30pm for 12–15-year-olds and 8pm-9pm for 16–18-year-olds. The classes are running for four weeks and cost €30. Register your child’s interest via email caitjode@gmail.com. Include your child’s name and age in the email. Please have registered before the classes on the 8th of November. No child is to turn up on the evening without first having registered. Once registered the trainers will outline our guidelines and Covid safety measures. Monthly Meeting.

There will be a monthly meeting of Castlelyons GAA on Thursday 4.11.21 at 6.30pm in the Community Centre.

Mass of Remembrance – East Cork Board.

On Monday the 8th of November the holy sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for the repose of the souls of all who passed away since the Covid pandemic.  This Mass will be at 7.30pm in St. John The Baptist Church, Killeagh and is in remembrance of all the GAA people from the Imokilly Division who have passed away since the Covid pandemic begin in March 2020. All clubs are invited to attend on the night and to submit a list of your club people who have gone to their eternal reward to Daniel Lane, Secretary East Cork Board. These names will be read out on the night and prayed for. There will be refreshments served afterwards and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
