Well merited win for Castlelyons in Red FM Hurling League Group 4B

Castlelyons 0-16 Mayfield 0-15.

Our Intermediate hurlers were back in league action on Sunday in the new style League Cup.

They played a very spirited Mayfield side and while they were always on top, they could not pull away on the scoreboard and came away with just a one-point win.  There is a lot of room for improvement but sure this is the time t be getting things right rather than later.  Mayfield had a strong deck with a few new aces in Dillan O Donovan at full back, a recent signing, Nicky Kelly back after a lengthy injury and fully fit again and Fanahan McSweeney another recent signing from Sarsfields.  Shane O Donovan was at centre back for them and they were almost at full strength whereas we were down a few but as my friend Henry Hazelwood of Bride Rovers and Castletown often said ye still had fifteen on the field.  Mayfield set up with a sweeper system and Jamie O Leary came out on Nicky Kelly to counteract this while Colm Barry worked across the half back line.  It was 0-9 t 0-6 in favour of Castlelyons at half time with our lads having plenty of possession but guilty of a lot of wayward shooting.

The second half was much the same as Castlelyons were on top but could not pull away on the scoreboard. Mayfield had a strong full back in Dillon O’Donovan, and they held their lines well.  Alan Fenton our top scorer had a right battle with the experienced Shane Donovan. Leon Doocey who was on the experienced Dave O’Neill, and Michael Spillane done well for us in the middle of the field.  Our backs hurled well all through with Colm Barry lording it across the half line which makes on wonder about the value of this sweeper system. All our panel were given time on the field, and this was a good game for us as Mayfield are a handy outfit and well set up for the year ahead.

Junior B Hurling Castlelyons 1-15: St Catherines 1-15.

A Monday evening derby in the JBHL versus St Catherines in Páirc Ó Laoighaire with sun drenched weather sure what a better place to be and it lived up to all expectations.  There was good hurling, some great scores, tough exchanges and in the end, it was all even at 1-15 apiece. Castlelyons started very well and led 1-3 to 0-1 with Richie Morrison, Alan Regan, Ronan Fenton, Darren Tobin on the scoreboard and an ever-improving Dara Spillane hitting the net for a great goal. Catherines kept Castlelyons in check and reeled them back with some great scores of their own leaving it 1-9 to 1-7 at half time.

We started the second half well again with some great defending from the Geary brothers and Stephen Casey.  Our half back line of Jack Kenny, Conor McCarthy, and Colm O’Neill done very well too.  Our midfielders of Peter Roche and Brian O’Donovan had a battle royal with their men.  Colm McCarthy playing in the corner was accurate and supplied 0-3 but St Catherines kept the scoreboard ticking over with a few good scores of their own as Eoin Condon back from San Francisco began to make impact for them.  We led 1-13 to 1-12 at the water break. The last quarter saw some great hurling but both sides were guilty of wayward shooting.  St Catherines drew level and Tom Hartnett, who was hurling, mighty for the Cats put them in front.  Then Oscar Hallihan, a young player catching the eye a lot these days, struck a massive point for us. Colm McCarthy was fouled with time running out and put over his own free as Castlelyons led almost on the whistle. St Catherines rallied and won a free which was converted by Harry Draper.  Overall, this was a very entertaining game and well done to both sides as a draw was a fair result.  Mark Murphy, Rathcormac was the referee on the evening and did a good job.

First ever third team in adult hurling level for Castlelyons set out with a victory. 

Sunday was a busy day for Castlelyons, and it was onto Midleton for a 6pm game for our JCHL fixture versus Midleton.  This was another milestone for the Club as it was our first time ever fielding a third team in a hurling competition. Of course, playing against Midleton was a tough start.  Well done to the team mentors John McCarthy, Michael O’Donovan and Ciarán McGann as we had a panel of sixteen.  The panel comprised of one very senior player a few seasoned players and a lot of young players. Midleton set the tone with a brace of points, but we recovered with 0-2 from Colm McCarthy and 0-1 each from Oscar Hallihan and Ciarán McGann to lead 0-4 to 0-2 at the water break.  Midleton narrowed the gap with a monster point shortly after the break.  Then Ciarán McGann latched onto a long clearance from Stephen Casey and parted to Ian O’Sullivan who banged in a great goal. Stephen Casey got a point after some good work and Dara Spillane was on the mark for us after a clearance from Griffin O’Keeney.  Midleton kept in touch, but Colm McCarthy had the final say with a pint to give us a 1-6 to 0-5 half time lead.  Griffin O’Keeney who was doing well, had to come off at half time as he felt pain because of an older injury, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Stephen Casey, doing well at centre back set the tone for us in the second half with a monster point and we maintained control with Dara Spillane getting 0-3 in the second half, and Ciarán McGann (0-2).   And good scores from Michael Griffin, Eoin, and Gavin O Neill and Oscor Hallihan while Colm McCarthy was unerring from play and frees.  Taking our scores plus great defensive work by our backs John Healy, Eoin Barry, Brendan Hoare, and Pierse Varner helped us to a great victory. Now victory did not come easy as Dave Kenny, who was sound in goal, showed massive bravery on one occasion to come out, take a hit, and prevent a certain goal.  John Healy our corner back received a very nasty head injury and had to visit the hospital later.  Our younger players many still under 18 coped very well as they came up against a seasoned Midleton team who were not overtly rough but fine and tough.  This was the first outing at adult level for referee David Buckley and he done very well as his decision making and use of the advantage was good.  I am don’t know when we beat Midleton in a competitive game before but no doubt someone had the answer.

Another big victory for our Camogie girls in U13 Imokilly Plate Final.

Castlelyons 3-10 Carrigtwohill 3-2.

Castlelyons certainly hitting a right note these times with another fine wine for the Club, this time in the Fé 13 Uí Mac Coille Plate Final.  They played Carrigtwohill in Páirc Ó Laoghaire last Wednesday evening.  Carrig got off to a massive start Castlelyons settled well to lead 2-2 to 0-5 at half time and take over in the second half.  In the end it was a comprehensive victory 3-10 to 3-2 and Captain Evan Cotter received the winner’s plaque. All the girls played well and congrats on a great win. Castlelyons Abú.

Well done and a special thanks, also, to two very learned girls who are managing this team namely Rachel Murphy and Gráinne McCarthy.  Rachel is a student of Sports and Exercise Science in University College. Limerick (she has worked with the Clare footballers, but her placement was cut a little short due to the pandemic), and Grainne is a student at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

Castlelyons 2-12 Fr O Neills 5-12.

Castlelyons played Fr O’Neills on Friday evening at home and were not up to the standard of the Fr O’Neills due to a number unavailable through injury and U15 players not available. There were only 16 players available, but they made it a competitive game, and all tried their best. Big thanks to Alan Fenton and Steve, who are coaching the lads this year. Their next game will be football on the 23.6.21 and the U17 hurling championship is set to commence on 30.6.21.

St Colmans 7-14 Castlelyons 2:15.

Our U15 hurlers played St Colmans on Saturday in the Rebel Óg East Division 2 hurling, The game was played in ideal conditions with Pa Beausang on the whistle.  St Colmans are a combination of Cloyne and Russell Rovers and a strong side.  While scoreboard portrayed a looked a facile victory for St Colmans our lads can take a lot of positives too as they never gave up and all the panel were given game time.  Joint Coaches Keith and Jamie O’Leary are putting in a good bit of work with the lads and they will come good yet. Their next game is on Saturday 19.6.21 away to Lee Gaels in football

Castlelyons GAA wishes a happy retirement to Mary Martin of Narnia Pre School.

Forty years is a very long time in any walk of life.  Well, this week Mary Martin closes the doors for the last time in her Narnia Pre School which she set up in 1981.  Mary was a very dedicated person who had a great understanding with her children.  She got great support from the parents down the years as the children came from Coolagown, Britway, Castlelyons, Bartlemy, Rathcormac and Fermoy. She loved the work and always kept modernising her pre school and updating her own childcare education.  This led to the overall success of the pre school for so many years.  She held the Annual School Concerts in the Community Centre, and they always drew in large crowds one a sketch on the 1916 – 2016 and a few with Derek of Crystal Swing with a special one where all the children were dancing and enjoying Wagon Wheel.  

Mary is a great GAA supporter as both her sons Declan and William played the game, and her granddaughter Michelle plays the Camogie.  She is a long-time follower of Cork and saw Christy Ring play.  Of course, she has great pride in our own Timmy McCarthy, a family friend, and his achievements with Cork.  She is a great supporter with of our Club down the years shouting us on while standing on the grass bank and supporting us in the money bank as she has a several tickets in the Rebel Bounty Draw.  Our Club wishes Mary, her husband James, and sons Declan and family and William in Australia, Deirdred, daughter, her granddaughter Michelle, Edel and her family, the absolute best in her retirement as it was a great effort over the years. Mary, enjoy your other great pastime gardening and a happy retirement. Ag guí gach ádh, sláinte an bhradáin agus sonas ort lá in ndiadh lae.

Castlelyons GAA wish to extend sincere sympathy to the Barry family, Bartlemy, the Jones family, Ballyhooly and Coolagown on their recent bereavements and to the Delaney family, Fermoy on the death of P J Delaney.  The late PJ was a Postman with An Post and served parts of Castlelyons Parish.  He was most helpful to people during the early parts of the pandemic.  His sad passing is so untimely.  Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go léir.
