Castlelyons GAA Notes week WE 18.6.20. 2020-06-20 17:50:00

Update on return to train and play for our players.

All clubs have recently received a stern reminder from the County Administrator that no permission of any kind has been granted by Cumann Lúthchleas Gael or Coiste Chontae Chorcaí to resume organised training as pitches remain closed and the player injury scheme is suspended at club level until Monday June 29th and at county level until September 14th. Thanks to all our own team managers who have strictly observed these protocols and we look forward to a cracking return shortly as no doubt all the lads have kept up their fitness.

However, there are a lot of calls to open the pitches earlier from GAA pundits and others but the return to training date is in line with next Government announcement.  County officials have been told by the GAA authorities that the roadmap may well be accelerated if improvements continued to me made with the 'R’ rate of infection and declining positive cases and transmissions, any setbacks would invariably lead to delays in progress.  It is so positive for all to have dates for return to train and play as it is only some weeks ago, we were writing off the year due to the Covid-19 crisis.

The Guidelines on Safe Return to Gaelic Play issued on was updated again on the 12.6.20.  There are two important amendments that simplifies, and eases matters for team Covid Supervisors. The Health Questionnaire now requires completion only once before return to training.  Firstly, it will be the responsibility of the individual to inform the team’s Covid Supervisor of any change in his / her circumstances before subsequent sessions. Secondly, it is the responsibility of the individual to monitor their own temperature. The presence of symptoms such as a high temperature (above 37.5c), cough, sore throat, general weakness, shortness of breath and change or absence in taste or smell prevents attendance at training with a recommendation that the individual contacts their General Practitioner. These guidelines will no doubt be further updated and revised.  Accordingly all members should keep themselves familiarised with latest updates which are available at: https://learning.gaa.ie/covid19.

Castlelyons GAA Meeting.

We recently held a club meeting and commenced arrangements for return to training.  We have a Covid Group selected from the Officers, Adult, Juvenile and Camogie. This group will establish appropriate guidelines and protocols based on directives from Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, and in turn will advise members and team groups across all codes of these arrangements once agreed and in place.  In the meantime, our playing facilities still closed and no pitch bookings can be made as the Group are having a look at the overall bookings due to a break required to give teams a chance to get on and off the pitch. Thanks for your cooperation. During the coming week or so we have a suite of essential tidy and repair work to do so hopefully when contacted members will be available.

Castlelyons Intermediate Hurlers awaiting new set up for Championship.

Well some counties have outlined their new club championship set up, but we still await the Cork one.  It is understandable that due to size and so many clubs involved in a dual capacity of hurling and football it will be difficult to get the business done in such a short timeframe and that Cork are awaiting the intercounty draws first.  Castlelyons were involved in a most competitive group with Inniscarra, Blarney and Blackrock. Should the championship be played in Group format and there is talk it may will be the case we need to be ultra-careful as each of these teams are good. Colm Barry our star full back underwent surgery to a serous ankle injury and is doing some running again.  However, he may not be ready for the first game.  Colm is vital to Castlelyons and, indeed, Imokilly as he was voted the top full back in Cork senior hurling in each of the last three years as Imokilly won a three in a row.  However, if we hit good form and Colm Barry available there is ability to take any team but what is our good form let us see. Sure, it is great to look forward to the action again.

Special birthday congratulations.

A special congratulations to Florence and Ann Waters of Kilbarry who celebrated their seventy fifth and seventh birthdays this week.  No doubt they will have the real celebrations with the family when the restrictions are lifted.  Florence a long-time member of the club and former player.  He currently assists with our weekly lotto which will be back shortly as we return to normal.  Of curse he is an active member of the Coolagown Tidy Towns as the place looks in great shape always.  Happy Birthdays Folks.

Castlelyons and Coolagown benefit to amount of €5200 from County Council Grants.

At a recent meeting of Fermoy Municipal Branch there were a number of Grants allocated to both Castlelyons and Coolagown for most useful amenities.  Castlelyons Community Council were awarded €2000 for the purchase of Exercise Equipment for Father Ferris Park. Castlelyons Pitch and Putt Club were awarded €1000 towards resurfacing the car park. Coolagown Development Group were awarded €1000 for the development of a nature trail on Straight Roads and €1200 for maintenance and enhancement. Well done to those who prepared the successful applications and to the County Council for providing this very deserving funding for Castlelyons and Coolagown.

Votes of Sympathy

Castlelyons GAA would like to express sincere condolences to Liz O Brien and with Áine and Eoin together, also the O Brien and Sheehan families on the untimely passing of Oliver (Ollie) O Brien. The late Oliver O Brien was an outstanding community man and involved in many groups.  This was evident with the number of people present along the roadway of the funeral cortege and taking place in the Guard of honour, especially the GAA, Glanbia Group and children from Clondulane National school where his wife Liz is Principal.

He was a keen farmer and a member of the Glanbia Regional Advisory Group representing the farmers of Coolagown, Clondulane and Castlelyons and Fermoy Macra na Feirme. He took a great interest in Drama and was involved with Fermoy Macra and the Barrymore Drama Group.  Ollie was a past member of this group as he featured in John B Keane’s Moll as one of the curates.  He later played the role of one of the Kents of Bawnard in the Millennium Pageant and many others.

His late father John O Brien was on the Castlelyons East Cork 1953 and 1955 winning teams and Ollie took up the GAA too at juvenile level and was a dedicated member of Castlelyons GAA Club with juvenile success right through to County Junior titles in both hurling and football.  He excelled as Secretary of the Club at a young age and PRO. He was on the Bingo Committee and used to call the numbers and was a regular contributor to our weekly lotto.  He was also selector on many Castlelyons teams and in recent years a loyal supporter.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm dílis.

Castlelyons GAA Club wish to offer sincere condolences to Margo, Michael, Neil, Mary and Declan Spillane and their families on the passing of their mother Mrs Nancy Spillane.  The late Nancy Spillane was a good supporter of our club and attended many games.  All her sons Mick, Neil and Declan played with the club and all her grandchildren Michael, Declan, Anthony, Louise, Leah, Mark, Áine, Dara and Brian are involved with the club also while her grandchildren Oisin, Aislinn, Fian reside in Clonmel. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sí.
