Castlelyons Notes 24.9.18 & 17.9.18 2018-09-29 11:17:00

Castlelyons bow out of PIHC

Castlelyons 0-14 Courcey Rovers 1-15

Páirc Uí Rinn was the venue last Friday evening the premier intermediate hurling championship replay versus Courcey Rovers. This week the ground was a little softer with more give suiting the stronger man. Courceys played with the aid of a moderate breeze blowing into the Blackrock end for the first half. We set up for the first time with a sweeper scenario and started very well as we lead 0-6 to 0-2 after ten minutes although Tadgh O Sullivan their dangerman was first to score. During these early minutes our hurling was sweet and crisp Colm, Anto and Mike Spillane combined for Mike to score a great point. Darragh Lawlor and Eoin Maye scored points from play and Mike Spillane was accurate from frees. Then Courceys saw the light and countered our sweeper rather easily but were guilty of a few wides themselves as they came more into the play and on twenty minutes it was 0 - 6 to 0-4. They piled on a few more points and we failed to score for a 13-minute spell, but Mike Spillane got us back in the game with two pointed frees. Then they sent in a strong full forward Gerry O Neill who got possession and parted to Tadgh O Sullivan and he banged in a most important goal for Courceys. However, Colm Spillane put over a missile of a point to leave the half time score 1-7 to 0-9. Courceys had done a lot of hurling but were only one point ahead and we would have the breeze on the turnaround and our hopes were still high.

We started well in the second half but Courceys were first to score against the breeze and then Mike Spillane who was deadly from the frees pointed again for us. Their goalie S Nyhan came out and pointed a ’65 to the roar of Courceys who were beginning to hurl really well now against the breeze. Alan Fenton got injured and play was held up a little, but he recovered to score a good 0-1 and Mike Spillane scored a point. We were a little lost in our positioning but some mighty hurling by Niall O Leary, strong defending by Colm Barry who cleared a bag of sliotars and, of course, Jack Barry saved a penalty and had another massive save all kept out fierce Courcey attacking. Colm Spillane scored another inspirational point with fifteen minutes to go to leave the score 0-13 to 1-10. However, as the clock ran down Courcey Rovers found top gear and outscored us five points to one to run out convincing winners. We were very disappointed but that’s sport. We had the motivation but our style of play while interesting was a little different to usual and certainly allowed Courceys in the back door when they copped it. Also, Courceys had a class act over the two nights in Tadgh O Sullivan as he scored 0-9 in the first game and banged in 1-5 from play plus 0-4 from frees the last night. Our lads have worked very hard over the year and done well in the League as this game was also a quarter final of the league as ourselves, Courceys and Kilworth were all on even points behind Ballinhassig. Our Coach Darren Tobin, Manager Mick Spillane and selectors gave it everything, but it was not to be so well done to all.

Imokilly Versus in County SHC Semi-Final.

Imokilly who found the going hard against Newcestown in the last round are out in the semi-final against UCC in the Park on this Sunday at 2.30pm. The student with our own Jack Barry in goal looked very good against Sarsfield last time out and if they have all their players will be a handful for the Candy Stripes. We will have Colm Spillane and Niall O Leary ready for action on Sunday and surely Colm Barry is back to full fitness after his outstanding display against Courcey Rovers. Tom Carroll and Aidan O Sullivan are also on the panel and if they don’t start may well see some game time. Imokilly have the talent and if they can produce the fire and determination to go for another county title they can do it. Best of luck lads.

Major Fundraising Draw.

Castlelyons Adult Club, Juvenile Section and Camogie Club are currently selling tickets foe a major Fundraising Draw which will be held in the Community Centre on Saturday night 29.9.18. There are increased numbers involved in all grades now. Some of our teams fell at the business end of competitions recently. But some juvenile teams still in Rebel Óg including Colm McCarthy and Leon Doocey’s involvement with county teams. The Camogie Club is going from strength to strength with many girls representing the club on Cork teams this year too. The Juvenile Section is now catering for a record number of juveniles and are keeping up the traditional quality. This can be seen in the skill level of Castlelyons as Colm Spillane and Niall O Leary have represented Cork at the highest level in senior and U21 hurling this year and This writer remembers them as juveniles just a few years ago. It costs a bit to run these clubs. This fundraising committee are highly motivated, motoring well and have €3,000 in prizes for the Draw with tickets priced at €10 each. We are in the last week and your support is appreciated

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 17.9.18

Mike Spillane’s last minute free gives us a replay in the PIHC

Castlelyons 1-14 Courcey Rovers 0-17

We hit for Páirc Uí Rinn on Friday evening last to take on Courcey Rovers in the premier intermediate hurling championship having defeated Youghal almost five months ago. We knew Courceys would be tough as we have always found it hard to get past them in any competition. The evening was ideal for hurling and the pitch in good condition. Referee Joe Larkin threw in the sliotar got out of the way and both teams hurled in a very sporting manner. Ronan O Regan had our first score 0-1 from play and Tadgh O Sullivan levelled for them from a free. Barry Murphy had a fine point for us and when Ciaran McGann was fouled, and Alan Fenton despatched the free we were 0-3 to 0-1 ahead and motoring. O Sullivan was accurate from frees and play for them but so was Alan Fenton for us and Anto Spillane returning after a lay off was proving a handful for the Courceys backs and doing well as it was 0-7 apiece after twenty minutes. Once again, we were guilty of misfiring on long range missiles as at least three of them were off target. This was a time of dominance when it might have been more rewarding to drop in the ball. Courceys had ideas of their own and fought back hard going into a two-point lead and but Barry Murphy and Anto Spillane replied for us with good points. Courceys were doing all the hurling now as O Sullivan and Twomey moved about the place a lot and created space as the ball was put in with accuracy. However, despite their dominance the score was just 0-10 to 0-9 at the short whistle in favour of Courceys.

We started the second half well as Niall O Leary, Colm Barry and substitute Declan Varner got to grips with the Courcey forward line. Then Barry Murphy showing up well for ball for gained possession and moved a mighty pass into Mike Spillane putting him in the clear although some distance out. Mike is the man for those ones and sure enough he moved like a rocket and obliged with a bullet into the far corner to the delight of the large following. We were hurling better but it was battle royal with our backs and the Courceys attack. O Sullivan and Twomey were on the score board for Courceys assisted by their midfielder Killian Moloney. Aidan O Sullivan and Tommy Carroll were going well as were Darragh Lawlor and Eoin Maye and we enjoyed our best spell. They were attempting to drag our ring commander Colm Spillane about the place and kept the ball away from him. We were three points up with just ten minutes left. Then disaster for us as an outstanding Niall O Leary, who was outstanding for us, went down with a nasty injury and play was held up for a few minutes. To make matters worse we had a free at that time, but the time out did not help, and we were off target. Courceys went down field and tacked on a point which meant a possible four up was now just two up and sure enough Courceys came at us hammer and tongs and put three points on the board one an enormous banger of a free from their goalie and the last one putting them up a point by O Sullivan. Into injury time but fair play to our lads as they kept going and Alan Fenton was fouled. Mike Spillane was unerring with the resultant free to send the game to a replay.

The standard of hurling was good in this game and well handled by referee Joe Larkin. Courceys are a good side and we did well but there is more in us and no doubt our mentors will be working hard on this over the next week. Best of luck lads. The replay is now settled for Páirc Uí Rinn next Friday evening 21.9.18 at 7.30pm and once again we would appreciate your support as we need it all. Castlelyons Abú

Congratulations to Castlelyons Camogie Team – County Champions 2018

A special congrats to our Camogie team who had a great win over Aghada in the County final on Saturday. Well done girls and thanks to their mentors Timmy McCarthy and Trevor Hickey.

Imokilly advance in County SHC.

Champions and roaring favourites almost came a cropper in this Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday as Newcestown roared on by a huge crowd came within a point on time. Imokilly with an array of talent including four current senior players and many more who wore the rebel jersey recently were lethargic and unable to match the strength of Newcestown for long periods of the game. They pulled away towards the end, but very poor defending left the West Cork men back into it. Judging on this display Imokilly need serious improvement if they are to progress and, of course our next opponents are UCC who showed no mercy in dispatching Sarsfields in the other game on Sunday. We have the hurlers but have we the combination and determination well we’ll know in two weeks’ time. Best of luck lads.
