Castlelyons GAA Notes we 2.4.18. 2018-04-03 14:20:00

Imokilly on the double but injury to Castlelyons star.

Uí Mac Coille strengthened this year by the additions of county men or own Colm Spillane, Bill Cooper, Youghal and Dungourney star Shane Hegarty plus a few more had two facile championship victories in the last week as they defeated both Muskerry and CIT putting up big scores. Our own captain Aidan O Sullivan came on for Bill Cooper in the Muskerry game and Niall O Leary, back from injury came on at half time in the game against CIT.

However, Colm Barry who was doing so well again this year at full back received a nasty leg injury and had to come off in the CIT game. Hopefully, it is not too serious, but he will have to await the outcome of further examination in the CUH and we wish him well in recovery.

Meanwhile his brother Jack is doing very well in goal for UCC as they had easy wins over Carbery and Avondhu recently. So, both Uí Mac Coille and UCC have now made round three of the championship which will be played later in the year depending on Cork’s progress in the Munster and All Ireland series.

Castlelyons 5-19. Dungourney 0-17.

Castlelyons played the first game of the year at home on Saturday evening as they hosted Dungourney in a challenge. The pitch was in good condition and Mark Murphy of Bride Rovers did a good job on the whistle. We settled into the game early. They say goals win games and we put four past the Dungourney keep in the first half and put over eleven points as well. Barry Murphy was first to register a green flag with an opportune one after a great run and shot by Colm O Neill, but his shot was saved by the keeper and Barry pounced to bang in the rebound. Then Ronan O Regan supplied another after good work by Darragh Lawlor. Eoin Maye came through the middle and banged home a third and we had a fourth from a rasper by Shane Moroney. We led 4-11 to 0-6 at half time. There were several changes at half time as our selectors gave game time to all, and we had a further goal from Shane Moroney and points from the free scoring Alan Fenton and one from Ian O Riordan we ran out facile winners as Dungourney may have been short a few of the big guns.

We are building fairly well for what will be a tough championship opener versus Youghal on the 28th April down in Killeagh. However, next Sunday we are at home to Courcey Rovers at 12.30pm in the League and we always had it tough with them, so your support would be appreciated.

Darragh Lawlor, Barry Murphy, Mike Spillane and Ronan O Regan. Subs: - Shane O Sullivan, John Paul Murphy, Pierse Varner, Declan Varner, Shane Moroney and Shane Fenton

Thanks to local retiring family businesses.

There was a special evening hosted by Castlelyons Community Council in our Bar last Sunday night to honour retired business owners, Liam and Margaret Martin of Martin’s Bakery and Bob and Joan McNamara, of McNamara’s Shop. These businesses were part of the hub of Castlelyons Community for many years but sadly and in line with the demise of many villages the shop and the Bakery are no more. As we said before they were always so helpful to us in sponsorship, support and provisions. James Ronayne of the Community Council chaired the evenings proceedings and both families were the recipients of lovely presentations appropriately called “Work Done” presented by Fr ColemanA cracking night of chat and song followed. So, from Castlelyons GAA to Liam and Margaret, Bob and Joan happy days in retirement and thanks for ye’r great support down the years. Also, well done to the organisers Castlelyons Community Council and to the members of the bar management committee, Elaine Murphy, Pat O Neill and Lisa Hallihan who did a mighty job on the night.
