Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 4.12.177 2017-12-05 19:31:00

East Cork IHC – Abernethy Cup Final.

Castlelyons 3-5 Fr O Neill’s 4-12

Well the show is over for 2017 as the curtains of a long season closed for Castlelyons in Killeagh last Saturday afternoon. It was far from Broadway in this December weather as Fr O Neill’s confirmed their superiority with a comprehensive 0-10 win to take the Abernethy Cup. While we were missing some notable players for various reasons you make do with what’s available and fair play the lads gave it all on the day. This was a rehash of the championship with a very strong Fr O Neill’s side doing the scoring as they ran up 2-3 to no score after twenty minutes. During this time, we had plenty of possession but hit nine wides and, in fact, a total of twelve in the first half. Ciarán McGann opened the scoring for us with a goal and we tagged on a few points through Eoin Maye and Alana Fenton. In the second half we came within a goal of O Neill’s as both Alan Fenton and Aidan O Sullivan had goals, but we conceded some sloppy scores at the other end. We had more points from Barry Murphy, Eoin Maye and Alan Fenton O Neill’s were on top to the final whistle.

Despite this loss the year could be classed very successful for Castlelyons as we had just two losses and unfortunately both were in the Championship one to Kanturk the eventual county winners and heading for the all-Ireland Club and the second to O Neill’s. We easily won out the relegation scene and then won the Division 2 League with promotion to the Premier grade once again and had a great win in the East Cork U21 hurling and a good run in Junior B before losing out in the final to Sarsfields who later won the County in that grade. So, it’s all to play for in 2018.

Team: - Jack Barry, Robbie Feeney, Colm Barry, Tom Carroll, Jamie O Leary, Niall O Leary, Colm O Neill, Eoin Maye, Barry Murphy, Darragh Lawlor, Ciaran McGann, Shane Moroney, Alan Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan and Ronan O Regan. Subs: - Shane O Sullivan, Brian O Donovan, Ronan Fenton and Alan O Regan (all got game time)

Monthly Meeting.

Our first monthly meeting was held last Monday night with new chairman Con Lawlor presiding. There were many matters and posts to be filled from the AGM and it was great to see the first meeting so well attended as there were twenty-eight club members present and showing electric energy for the coming year. The teams for the coming season are Premier Intermediate league and championship in Hurling. East Cork U21 hurling and football with grades to be decided. East Cork junior B hurling. The managers were elected and are as follows: - Intermediate hurling Mick Spillane, U21 and Junior B Hurling are Donal and Colm Barry, Donal O Leary is manager of the Junior football team. So, there were no big changes overall except for James Maye who stood down from the U21 and junior B set up as he was involved with Donal Barry last year. Our outgoing coach, Colm Crowley, advised committee that he was not taking up the position for 2018 and there was a wide discussion about his replacement and whether in house or outside. The latter was agreed, and it is understood there is one in Santa’s bag for the coming year. The Pitch Committee was elected as John Healy, John McCarthy and Donal Barry. We are still down on the treasurer, but the chairman is hoping that this most important position will be filled shortly.

County Convention

The Annual Convention of the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association will be held at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on this Sunday 10.12.17, commencing at 2.30pm. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be celebrated at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Convention afternoon at 1.30pm. in memory of all deceased members. There are a lot of reports and matters for discussion and it is important that our delegates and clubs attend and contribute to discussions. We wish the incoming chair, Ms Tracey Kennedy, the very best in her tenure of office. She has vast experience from her time in both East Cork and the County Board and is an outstanding person to lead Coiste Chontae Chorcaí for the next three years. We thank outgoing chairman, Ger Lane, for his massive contribution to Cork and a simple but vast pen picture of his work was outlined in last Monday’s Irish Examiner as Páirc Uí Chaoimh and its facilities takes its place among the world’s finest stadiums. I have no doubt that Ger would have like to capture the ultimate in hurling and football. That’s easier said than done and when the sea is calm every ship has a good captain. Ger has always worked very hard and dealt with issues well. Recent great displays at underage level and the capture of an U17 hurling title has the ships are sailing again. Well done Ger.

Donal Sheehan, Castlelyons takes top Environmental Award.

The Annual Cork Environmental Forum (CEF) annual Environmental awards were held recently in the Firkin Crane Theatre in Cork City added a new agricultural category. Our own former football and hurling star Donal Sheehan was one of two who received the pioneering awards. Donal is a strong dairy farmer and nature-lover. He respects, preserves and endeavours to enhance the environment and uses a variety of measures to make his farm more sustainable. We congratulate him and wish him well in his great work.

Club Dinner Dance.

Aidan O Sullivan, Denis Fenton and Colm Barry are hoping to arrange a dinner dance for the new year. The are medals for the Junior football league and intermediate hurling league to be presented and it was felt a night out would be a good bond for the coming season. So if you are interested do contact Aidan O Sullivan as he is working on the App at the moment and arrangements with numbers look good.
