Castlelyons Junior B Hurlers qualify for East Cork Final.

Castlelyons 2-17 St Catherines 1-19.

Our Junior B hurlers headed for Dungourney on Sunday to take on St Catherines in the semi-final of the Eamon Fleming Cup and advanced to the final in a hectic last few minutes. What a time for a game on All Ireland football day but the lads were supporting the ladies in the Camogie in the morning and others had a Senior hurling challenge and, of course, lads involved with UCC in the evening. Congrats to Dungourney on their latest development of a lovely stand and their pitch was in mighty form and conducive to good hurling as both teams gave their all in a most exciting game.

We started well with Shane Moroney sending over 0-1 but Catherines then grinded our 0-3 by three different players and were getting on top when Brian O Donovan had a point from a free after Shane Moroney was fouled and Ronan O Regan had a fine point from play. However, Catherines were in control in many parts of the field at this stage and had another 0-4. There was one of those a monster which their No 8 Ronan Clancy hit from well inside his own half. Brian O Donovan had 0-1 for us but Catherines replied again with 1-1. Ronan O Regan doing well had another 0-1 and Shane Moroney who was beginning to play very well had a fine 0-1. Mark Murphy put a bit of fire into our lads with a powerful run upfield and laid off lovely to Brian O Donovan who slotted over 0-1 from the wing. But Catherines scored 0-4 before half time and Colm O Neill who was trying very hard had 0-1 for us. The half time score 1-12 to 0-8 in favour of St Catherines and, indeed, they were well on top as they had a few wides also. While the standard of hurling was good our goalie JP Murphy and full back line of M Murphy, L Moroney and P Murphy had to be at their best as they had to cope with a lot of ball.

St Catherines had a point from a free by Ronan Clancy shortly after the start of the second half but at last we began to show a bit of form as Shane Fenton cleared to Shane Moroney and he tore in from the right and passed across to Chris Cotter who gave us a lifeline with a mighty goal. At this stage Alan O Regan had come on and was winning a lot of possession but again we had a few wides. Cian O Leary now storming into the game, as were the other two half backs Shane Fenton and Noel McAuliffe, made a great catch in the centre and parted to Shane Moroney who was fouled and Barry Murphy put over the free. Barry Murphy who had also come on at half time put over his second free as Moroney was fouled once again. However, St Catherines kept the scoreboard ticking over with a few more points of their own. Michael Geary and Declan Sexton came on for Mark Murphy and Padraig Murphy who had given their best and were tiring. Ronan Fenton had a point for us but Catherines replied with 0-1 again. There was some great hurling from both sides now and our lads were up for the closing battle but finding enemy lines tough. Declan Sexton came out of defence and made a raking clearance which was picked up by Barry Murphy who goaled and it was game on. However, Catherines had two more points from frees but Barry Murphy who was operating out at half forward and roaming had great two points from play also for us. Our full forward line of A O Regan, C Cotter and M Hegarty tried so hard and forced a ’65 which Barry Murphy pointed under pressure to level the game and time was running out. We were treated to some great hurling now for this level as both teams fought for survival and well into injury time Moroney fetched once again and parted to Ronan O Regan who found Barry Murphy and he duly delivered the winning point to send us into the final.

This was your typical derby as St Catherines fought and led all the way and Castlelyons kept the scoreboard ticking over even when we were under serious pressure in the first half. Credit Catherines for the effort even though they had lost a few players in their bid for the county junior A championship and we wish them the best. But credit our lads for their never say die attitude and our management outfit for very astute changes. Like the Dubs later that day our bench was strong too.

UCC advance in county senior hurling championship.

Congratulations and well done to our three club members who were on the UCC team that defeated Midleton in a cracker in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday evening. Jack Barry, goalie, Colm Spillane, full back and Anthony Spillane, corner forward all played well and represented our club with distinction in this game. In fact, the Red FM tweeted “Colm Spillane scores and outrageous point to level it”. Now UCC had about nine players from Cork and the others have worn their respective intercounty jersey so this is a good side but history shows the College were only successful in 1960 and 1963. This is an outfit that will be difficult to beat and they take on Sarsfields in next Sunday’s double header as Erins Own play Uí Mac Coille in the other one.

Compliments to UCC on their victory and while there is a debate and tweeting going on that Divisions or Colleges should not be in the senior championship there must be two sides to this debate. The College is a breeding ground for Cork hurlers with great coaches and committed men helping like John Grainger and the great Tom Kenny at present. Indeed, there were some massive years of Cork hurling when the model was that senior clubs blooded from local clubs or lads gravitated to the city and college for senior stuff. Now we have a host of young tigers like Darragh Fitzgibbon, Mark Coleman, Rob O Shea and many others together with the Spillane brothers and Jack Barry from our own club getting that opportunity to play senior hurling. This can only be good for the boys, the College and especially Cork so drive on lads.

Uí Mac Coille senior hurlers prepare for Championship.

Uí Mac Coille senior hurlers are preparing for the quarter final of the championship versus Erins Own next Sunday. Training has gone well and they had an interesting challenge versus Youghal on Sunday evening in Magners Hill. Uí Mac Coille were missing several players but this gave others an opportunity to show their talent. Our men Colm Barry and Tom Carroll played for the hour and showed well. Aidan O Sullivan got an amount of game time doing well too and Niall O Leary was unavailable through sickness. The selectors have an array of talent available within the Division that could deliver a county title but they have a tough job in hands to put out the top panel.

Major Fundraising Draw.

Castlelyons Adult Club, Juvenile Section and Camogie Club are promoting a major fund-raising drive for the next month. Each club offers tremendous social values of the clubs to the local community and there are increased numbers involved in all grades. A host of teams are still involved in the business end of competitions to date this year. The U21 hurlers after their East Cork win are now heading into the county section while Camogie and Juvenile teams are involved at various levels. The Juvenile Sections are now catering for a record number of juveniles and are keeping up the traditional quality and skill level of Castlelyons as Colm Spillane and Barry Murphy have represented Cork at the highest level in senior and minor hurling this year. However, it costs a bit to run these clubs and the fundraising committee who are energetic and motoring well have €3,000 in prizes with tickets priced at €10 each. Your support is appreciated.

Important week for our Intermediate Hurlers.

We headed out to Castletownroche on Sunday the 30th April last with great hopes for the year. However, they were dashed by a slick Kanturk side who were aided with a gift of a goal all the way from a puckout by the great Anthony Nash but talking to the Kanturk lads later they said it got a deceiving touch on route. Despite giving away a few other easy scores we fought back mighty and were unlucky not to take it. Now here we are in the end of September still hurling and heading for a relegation battle with Tracton on Tuesday the 26th with venue to be arranged and Kanturk are in the county final versus Mallow shortly.

However, there is a lot of good news for us too as we head the Division 2 Intermediate League and victory over Meelin this Wednesday would secure promotion to the Premier Division and put us in the final for the League title. We are also in the final of the Abernethy Cup. Not to mention winning the East Cork U21A Hurling last week and putting us into the county and in the final of the East Cork JBHC shortly. So, there is still a lot to play for and put Castlelyons hurling in a healthy place for 2018. Mick Spillane and his management outfit are doing their best and if the lads get take example from the display of the Under 21’s lately and drive on this week we can do the business. Best of luck lads.
