A Weekend of Horses and Hurling.

East Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship – Abernethy Cup

Castlelyons 1-13 Castlemartyr 2-5.

Our lads headed for Killeagh on Monday evening to play Castlemartyr in the Abernethy Cup and a kind of pitch familiarisation course for the upcoming championship game. The pitch was in excellent order but it was a very wet and windy evening and this really effected the quality of hurling but both teams gave it all with local man Ger Scully as referee. Playing with the wind and rain in the first half we were totally on top and had scores from scores from Michael Spillane (0-5, 3 frees), Alan Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan, Darragh Lawlor 0-1 each and Ronan Fenton closed out the half with a well taken goal. So we led 1-8 to 0-0 at the short whistle. However, we could have been out of sight as we were through on three occasions “one on one” with goalie Jimmy Smiddy but failed to finish. Jimmy an outstanding hurler in his day but of senior years now certainly showed class is permanent as he dealt with younger powerful men but of lesser experience. We shot a plethora of 13 wides during the first half. These are issues our management will have to rectify for more important days ahead. Our defence did cope well in the first half and a highlight of the evening was our own goalie John Paul Murphy, on St Colman’s panel and minor goalie for us last year, made his debut at intermediate level and had a fine game. Well done JP.

On the turnaround Aidan o Sullivan attacked with purpose and shot over a good point and later Darragh Lawlor had 0-1. Castlemartyr, with the aid of a stiff breeze this half scored four points and with 15 minutes left it was 1-10 to 0-4. The when there was a goal on for us but we kicked wide as Smiddy closed the angle and Castlemartyr came right back into the game. They split our defence to break through for two well taken goals from Liam Martin and Jamie Stack and a point. However, our midfield of Eoin Maye and Ronan O Regan worked hard against the wind and Michael Spillane steadied us with 0-2 from difficult frees and Brian O Donovan who had come in was winning a lot of ball laid on a mighty one for Darragh Lawlor on the run who closed out the game for us with a great point. We are now in the semi-final of the prestigious Abernethy Cup as this is the first year it is used in the Intermediate grade. It may not match days that we hurled some of the East Cork senior teams off the field when the Cup was for senior grade but we are winning but with room for serious improvement if we are to take down raging favourites Fr O Neills in the championship. Forwards Jack Barry (hamstring) and Alan Fenton (toe) came off early in the first half injured is adding to our list of injuries.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Brian Carroll, Declan Varner, Tom Carroll, Colm O Neill, Colm Barry, Ronan Bransfield, Eoin Maye, Ronan O Regan, Jack Barry, Con Lawlor, Michael Spillane, Ronan Fenton, Alan Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan. East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 2

Castlelyons 1-17 Carrignabhfear 1-6

This was a home game in Páirc an tAthair Peadar O’Laoghaire which was in pristine condition. Sincere compliments to Liam O Neill and Tony Rodgers who take great interest in our Pitch and do a fine job and to Supervisor Assumpta Mangan and John Healy. Back to the hurling on a lovely mid-summer evening and while it did not match the condition of the pitch or the weather nevertheless Castlelyons deserved a 1-7 to 1-2 half time lead with Ronan O Regan scoring 1-3, Brian O Donovan 0-2, Shane Moroney and Alan O Regan 0-1 each while Peter O Sullivan had a goal and Brian Sheehan scored 0-2 from frees for Carrignabhfear.

We kept up the pressure in the second half with and scored another 0-10 through Ronan O Regan 0-3, Ronan Fenton 0-2, Darren Tobin 0-2, Alan O Regan and Brian O Donovan 0-1 each. Our selectors gave all the subs a game also with Michael Hegarty on for Chris cotter, Noel McAuliffe on for Eoin Barry, Redmond Walsh for Padraig Murphy, and Michael Geary on for Shane Fenton. We ran out convincing winners 1-17 to 1-6 even if the opposition were somewhat weak on the night. We are now third in the table with a chance of making the final of the Mossie O Sullivan Cup as we have four points after three games. Rovers are top with ten points from five games and Sarsfields second but on the same points as ourselves.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Mark Murphy, Padraig Murphy, Liam Moroney, Eoin Barry, Colm O Neill, Shane Fenton, Brian O Donovan, Darren Tobin, Keith O Leary, Ronan Fenton, Ronan O Regan, Chris Cotter, Shane Moroney, Alan O Regan. Subs: - Michael Hegarty, Michael Geary, Noel McAuliffe, Redmond Walsh.

Evening at the Races an outstanding success.

The June Bank Holiday weekend is more noted for Castlelyons people heading for the beech, Thurles or cutting the sileage into the night but Sunday evening was different this year as a packed Community Centre was treated to an outstanding evening at the races. The races were almost a reality as the punters placed bets liberally with the unexpected ones doing well and it could be seen that money won is twice as sweet as money earned. Michael Byrnes a master of the auction worked the oracle in selling some of the top horses as some of our breeders had to take on the syndicates who steadied well before jumping into the big bids. The prizes of wine and mugs worked a dream and well done to Michelle and the Club Bar staff who helped quell the thirst on the night. Thanks to our sponsors, those who placed adds on the Race Card, bought horses through cards, the raffle, the auction, to all patrons who came on the night and especially the committee who produced an outstanding evening of entertainment and craic. The seanfhocal says ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine which was so was true and important going forward in the upkeep of the Centre.

County Senior Hurling Championship.

Imokilly 1-26 UCC 3-10.

Imokilly were full value for their eight-point victory over strong UCC outfit on Sunday evening in Riverstown. The game featured our own and current Cork star Colm Spillane at full back and Captain for UCC and another of our stars, Colm Barry, at full back for Imokilly. Then there were the two goalies who now play outfield for their clubs, namely, Jack Barry, Castlelyons, in goal for UCC and Declan Dalton, Fr O Neills, in goal for Imokilly. Anthony Spillane had a great game for UCC scoring two goals while Tom Carroll and Aidan O Sullivan were on the bench for Imokilly. Generally, it was a tame affair as the Divisional side move on and UCC have another life left. Well done to Fergal Condon and his selectors and to all Castlelyons lads involved on the night.
