Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 8.5.17 2017-05-09 13:30:00

Castlelyons defeat Fr O Neill’s to go second in Football League

Castlelyons 2-18 Fr O Neill’s 2-4.

It was back to football this weekend after the highs of intermediate hurling last week or was it the lows as we headed for Aughavine to play Fr O Neill’s in the Patrick O Mahony Cup. The weather was good and Jim Hennessey was on the whistle. Fr O Neill’s choose to play with a stiff breeze in the first half and were up 1-1 in ten minutes but our lads fought back well. Despite the lack of practice, we dominated the rest of the half to lead 0-8 to 1-4 at the break. We continued to do very well again in the second half with some great scores from Alan O Regan, Eoin Maye and Alan Fenton.

We are now in with a right chance of making the final of this League as we are second in the table. However, we have a tough one in the championship against Aghada’s second outfit on the weekend of the 19.5.17. Aghada have been long the standard bearers of football in East Cork and field a strong senior team and top level U21 team. So hopefully we will be able to deal from a full deck for this game as should be clear of exams, injuries, etc, and this should put us in some position to make a reasonable challenge. Donal O Leary, James Moroney and Maurice Carroll are in charge here and best of luck in the preparation.

Scores: - Eoin Maye 0-3, Alan O Regan 0-3, Ronan Fenton 0-3 (0-2 frees), Alan Fenton 0-2, Aidan O Sullivan 0-2, Ciaran McGann 0-1, Andrew O Neill 0-1, Colm Barry 0-1, Darren Tobin 0-1, Robbie Feeney 0-1

Team: - Colm O Neill, Shane Fenton, Cian O Leary, Noel McAuliffe, Aidan O Sullivan, Declan Varner, Eoin Maye, Alan Fenton, Colm Barry, Darren Tobin, Ciaran McGann, Ronan Fenton, Robbie Feeney, Anthony Spillane, Alan O Regan. Subs: - Michael Geary for Aidan O Sullivan, Andrew O Neill for Anthony Spillane.

Junior B Hurlers too good for Douglas in challenge game.

Castlelyons 5-16 Douglas 2-5

Castlelyons Junior B Hurlers played a challenge at home on Sunday morning against Douglas. Conditions were ideal for hurling as it was warm and fine little breeze. This was a 12 a side game as both teams have a lot of players doing exams presently. Nevertheless, it was a great workout for the lads and they played very well. The quality of the opposition was poor as many players were weak on the basic skills of lifting and striking. Our lads were very committed even and we have very strong players in all lines with Mark Murphy, Noel McAuliffe, Padraig Murphy, Cian O Leary, Colm O Neill, Darren Tobin, Alan O Regan, and Keith O Leary lording it in all areas. Great to see Redmond Walsh, Andrew O Neill and Mark Spillane from last year’s minor team doing so well. Mike Hegarty took the laurels as man of the match. He was on fire around the square for us showing an array of skills and banging in 4-1.

Douglas were disappointing as they went up intermediate last year and now have Senior, Intermediate and Junior B. One would have thought that a club so successful at underage level in a highly-populated area would have loads of players but I suppose nowadays it does not follow that way. They did attack more in the second half and managed two goals. This was due to the hard work of 46-year-old Cormac Cahill who came on at half time and scored one goal for them while setting up the other. There will be testing days ahead and it is imperative that we keep a strong second team going but Donal Barry and his selectors are working hard at it.

Scores: - Mike Hegarty 4-1, Darren Tobin 0-7, Keith O Leary 1-4, Colm O Neill 0-1, Alan O Regan o-I, Chris Cotter 0-1, Mark Spillane 0-1

Team: - Mark Murphy, Redmond Walsh, Noel McAuliffe, Padraig Murphy, Cian O Leary, Colm O Neill, Darren Tobin, Alan O Regan, Keith O Leary, Mark Spillane, Mike Hegarty, Andrew O Neill. Sub: - Chris Cotter for Mark Spillane.

Congrats to Cork minor Hurlers and our own Barry Murphy.

Congrats to Barry Murphy who was part of the Cork minor hurling panel that had a comfortable win over Waterford in the Electric Ireland Munster minor hurling championship on Wednesday evening 3rd May. Barry who had a hamstring injury came on in the last ten minutes and despite the bandage looked in very good form as he scored a great point. This minor team looks good and could really be in the shake up for the championship this year. So best of luck to Dinny Ring, his selectors and the lads as many of them sit for the Leaving Cert and back again after a few vital weeks.

Community Diary.

The Castlelyons Community Centre Committee are holding an American Race Night in the Community Centre at 8.30 pm on Sunday 4th June 2017. The Centre has been the focal point of the Parish and, indeed, the surrounding areas. The Centre hosted the “Cork Makes It Exhibition”, an outstanding event, for so many years. It is home to the Barrymore Players and so many Clubs in the Parish. Down the years, we have a host of mighty celebratory evenings and nights of winning clubs and teams as it was always back to the Centre for some light refreshments. In fact, all parish committees and many from outside the parish hold their meetings at the Centre. As befits all such Centres there is a requirement for funding on an ongoing and sustained basis to ensure the upkeep of the place. Accordingly, the Community Centre Committee would really appreciate your support for the Race night which can be done through sponsoring a Race, an Add on the Race Card or buying a horse. All in all, this should be a cracking evening so do support and come along and keep that focal point of the Parish alive.
