Footballers defeat Carrigtwohill in Junior A Football Championship.

Castlelyons defeated Carrigtwohill in the first round of the East Cork Junior A football championship on Friday night on the score 0-8 to 0-4. While we nearly had more regulars in the treatment room than on the pitch the panel on the day is the deck dealt and our management and selectors done well. Once again, the lads played with fierce commitment and spirit that kept them in the game against a very strong Carrig outfit that threatened more than they delivered.

In the first half scores were scarce and the standard of football mediocre. However, Castlelyons moved the ball well but their shooting was off target. In fact, with twenty minutes gone in the game there was just one score as Castlelyons led 0-1 to 0-0. During that period, we had two shots on goal by Aidan O Sullivan and Robbie Feeney, Stephen Hickey was narrowly wide with a ’45 and Mikey Spillane put the point on the board. Then Carrig applied pressure for a while and scored 0-1 from play and 0-1 from a 30-metre free. However, Stephen Hickey and our full back line of Brian Carroll, Declan Varner and Shane Fenton played well. We got back into the game and Ciaran McGann laid on a pass for Mikey Spillane who scored a great point to leave it just 0-2 apiece at half time.

The standard of football improved in the second half and Robbie Feeney has 0-1 from play after good work by Darren Tobin. Both Robbie Feeney and Ronan O Regan showed good fitness and injected pace into our game as we upped out performance. There was a late tackle on their No 11 and we conceded a point from the resulting free. Eoin Maye 0-1 and Ronan Bransfield 0-2 from a free had further points. With 10 minutes to go and the game in the melting pot Stephen Hickey made a great save in goals for us. Colm Barry and Ronan Bransfield gained the upper hand against a strong Carrig pair. Ronan Bransfield had two more points for us as we had a good win on a final score of 0-8 to 0-4. It is great to get over the first round of any championship and while there is plenty of room for improvement it’s well done once again to Donal O Leary and the management team. We are now consolidating our place in Junior A football which is most encouraging. The East Cork Draw for the Junior A Football Championship is favourable and we are into the quarter finals but there is a bit of work to be done and sprinkle it with a few challenge games.

Castlelyons go second in the League.

Castlelyons 1-12 Kildorrery 1-10

Castlelyons had a very good win over Kildorrery on Sunday on a score of 1-12 to 1-10 at home in Castlelyons in a vital league game. This result has really shaken up the Division 2 Intermediate Hurling League as we are now second to new table toppers Watergrasshill. More importantly, we now have a right chance of promotion in 2017. Playing the game to the tune of referee Pa Beausang who did a good job Castlelyons set about putting a stamp on the game from the start. Michael Spillane was our free taker and scored 0-3 from placed balls in the first half while Ronan Bransfield, Brian O Donovan and Ciaran McGann all had points from play. However, the most important score came from Ronan O Regan who got in for good onto that came off the upright and beating the backs he belted the sliotar first time to the net for a great goal. We led 1-6 to 0-4 at half time.

We done well again in the second half and managed to score 0-6 as M Spillane scored 0-4 from frees, Aidan O Sullivan 0-1 and Ronan Bransfield 0-1 both from play. We were heading for a comfortable win but Dave Kelly buried a ’21 for Kildorrery in the closing minutes to leave the final score Castlelyons 1-12 Kildorrery 1-10. While had some players injured this gave others an opportunity to up their own game and the lads particularly fringe players really upped their game so well done to all. In fact, our backs limited Kildorrery to just 0-3 from play. Our next game will be away to Tracton in two weeks’ time.

Kildorrery who are coached these day by Denis Walsh lined out with three minors Ian Butler in goals, Dillon Kent at right corner back and Darren McNamara at wing forward and all played well. These lads have come through development squads and it is great to see progress. They were short their regular centre back Mickey Walsh. Peter O Brien their most experienced player went to the centre back which weakened their forwards. They lost Andrew O Brien after 28 minutes through injury. Dave Kelly managed 1-7 for them over the hour while Peter and Andrew O Brien and Finbarr Stapleton managed 0-1 each. So I suppose from a Kildorrery perspective they will be happy with the performance but we are satisfied and the points to stay in the promotion battle.

Great weekend for Cork.

Well what a weekend North and South for Cork last Sunday as the footballers went to Derry and pulled off a great win and surely have avoided the dreaded relegation to Division 3. Colm O Neill is showing great form again with 0-11 and so is Paul Kerrigan with 0-5 from play. So, who knows maybe we will have a good summer and it might be the same for the hurlers as they made it two on the trot in the League. This time Tipperary were victims to a focused and hardworking Cork outfit that lubricated the minds of all present to a championship dream of “the hay saved and Tipp bate” later in May. Well done to all and once again to our own man in the Rebel jersey Colm Spillane.
