Castlelyons GAA Club Notes week ended 23.1.17

Saint Colman’s gear up for Harty Cup final after derby victory.

 St Colman’s 1-8 Midleton CBS 0-7

St Colman’s are back in the final of the Harty Cup after a hard-fought victory over a tough Midleton CBS in Mallow last Saturday. January conditions effected the quality of the game but sure it’s better to win this one than lose a thriller. There were many heroes from a cluster of local clubs and none more so than our own lads Jamie O Leary at full back who saw off the challenge of two big Midleton men in Stack and Terry and had a mighty game, Niall O Leary who gave a man of the match display and the younger Barry Murphy who wore that centre forward shirt with distinction as he showed fierce commitment and speed, contributing 0-2 from play. Our other panel lads did not get a run but this is great experience for them.

There is something sticky and never say die about this Colman’s team as they have so many good lads willing to work and take responsibility that will make them hard to defeat and no doubt their Manager Flannan Cleary and his mentors will have them in top form for the final. They now meet Our Lady’s College Templemore in the Final. So well done to all last Saturday and its Colman’s Abú all the way to the final on Saturday 18th February possibly in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick.

Big win for Cork.

Cork 0-25 Waterford 1-19.

Cork took the Co-Op Superstores Cup in a tough game with Limerick on Sunday last. Alan Cadogan took a great pass from Sheamie Harnedy and planted a goal at the end to give Cork a last-minute victory with just a point to spare on a score of 1-20 to 1-21. Early days yet but Cork supporters could be back in the Red Parrot this year in voice as the hurlers continue to show promise for 2017 with five straight wins. Again, congratulations to our man Colm Spillane who did well at full back but retired at half time due to injury. Hopefully, he will be okay for the midweek Fitzgibbon Cup game versus UCD.

Castlelyons Lads on UCC Panel.

Colm Spillane, Anthony Spillane and Jack Barry are on the bus with the gear for the Fitzgibbon Cup Game in Belfield on Thursday as UCC are away to UCD. Both teams won their first-round games as UCD defeated Maynooth University 0-21 to 0-13 and UCC defeated Ulster University at home 5-13 to 2-4. Colm was at full back the last day and Anthony got game time the last day and contributed 0-1. Hopefully Jack will get a run this week as he is fine form and pushing for a place in goals.

Intermediate hurlers on the road again.

Well, our Intermediate hurlers are back on the road again with a challenge match against Carrigaline this Thursday night. Despite showing some great promise with a young team and being defeated by outright Intermediate winners and current senior teams Ballyhea and Youghal in ’13 and ’14 we have made early championship exits and had tame leagues in ’15 and ’16. However, we have had some injuries, retirements and transfers but we must go with what’s available and we do have an array of talent if we can click. This year lads have made a strong commitment and done some strong pre-season training. So best of luck to Manager Mick Spillane, his mentors and the lads for the season ahead.
