Cork record three wins in the Co-Op Superstores Munster Senior Hurling League.

Cork 0-25 Waterford 1-19.

The Co-Op Superstores Munster Senior League may be a January competition but there are some outstanding games this year. There is a something about putting on the Cork jersey. I have seen it down the years it is the dream of so many but few get that opportunity and when they do they give it their best. Last Wednesday night a young Cork outfit took the field against Waterford in front of a very large crowd and delighted their supporters with tough defending, good tackling and excellent scores. Many of the team may be classed as the extended panel but there are the men of the future and this is real blooding.

Cork were pushed all the way by an equally young Waterford side who made a right game of it to the long whistle. Pat Horgan was playing and between frees and (0-5) he banged over 0-13 and while it would suggest a little dependence on him it the Rebels night and it was by no means a one man show. Our man Colm Spillane started and slotted in very well at full back. Cork have no game at the weekend but they are hitting for the Banner next Wednesday night where they play Clare in Sixmilebridge and could chalk up four wins in a row

Saint Colman’s take on CBC Midleton in Harty Cup semi-final.

St Colman’s because of an expected and convincing win over Christian Brothers College, Cork have made the Harty Cup Semi Final. These lads have trained well, worked hard and won all their games to date defeating CBC Midleton, St Flannans and of course, CBC, Cork along the way. We have three Castlelyons men on the team and all did very well namely Jamie O Leary at full back, Niall O Leary at centre back and Barry Murphy at full forward. We also have John Paul Murphy, Seamus Moroney, Mark Spillane, James Kearney, and David Morrison on the panel. No doubt all three will start in the semi-final and the rest of the lads will tog as subs. Well done lads.

The semi-final is down for Mallow on this Saturday at 28.1.17 at 1.30 pm against ould opponents CBC, Midleton. Colman’s have already defeated the Midleton lads in a thriller earlier in the competition. In that game, all the good Colman’s hurling was done in the last ten minutes as they scored 1-6 without reply in the closing ten minutes and record a mighty win. Then in the O Callaghan Cup final with the lineouts much the same and the game played in terrible weather conditions Midleton came out on top. Therefore, the sides are very evenly matched and it will be down to attitude and form on the day. Best of luck to St Colman’s.

Point to Point Races in Knockanard.

All roads lead to Knockanard Point to Point Races on Sunday 12th February. Castlelyons GAA will host the traditional Refreshment Tent. There is a good bit of work in this and a “paper pick” at the end. We need help for a few hours on the day and we would appreciate if some volunteers gave their names to our Secretary, Michael Barrett.

This year Knockanard share racing with Punchestown, Naas and Toomdeely, Askeaton but it is expected that there will be six or seven races and possibly a divide. So for a great day its Race Day in Knockanard.

Introduction of Club Player’s Association.

Recent Press Releases outline that over 15,000 club players have registered to date with the CPA. The main topic presently of this is the fixtures set up and producing a club fixtures calendar. This is a very laudable and interesting idea and at last we will see an end to requests and heated arguments to postpone games to a more suitable date due to issues such as Weddings, Holidays, Stags, Hens, Music Festivals, Injuries and Players working away.

The calendar and strict dates for games seems to be the resolve for all these real issues of players and clubs that arise so this means players and clubs must really start planning. Hard times in an amateur game. Interesting days! However, there should be some improvements.

Scór Sinsir.

The East Cork Scór Sinsir final, down for Lisgoold on Sunday 5th February, 2017, is fast approaching as entrances should be in by 30th January. Cumann Lúthchleas Gael on promoting Scór at all levels has helped to play an important role on the revival of our culture and heritage. There are several disciplines covering all aspects of Irish culture in Figure/Céilí Dancing, Solo Singing, Recitation/Storytelling, Instrumental Music, Novelty Act, Ballad Group, Set Dancing, Table Quiz, Solo Dancing and Solo Music.

Chairman, Maurice Carroll, himself a singer and actor of renown is endeavouring to seek out some participants to represent our Club this year so please contact Maurice or Club Secretary Michael Barrett if you are interested in taking part.
