€1,000 Castlelyons winner in Cork GAA Clubs Draw.

Congratulations to Nora Ryan.

Congratulations to Nora Ryan, Castlelyons, who the won 5th Prize of €1, 000 in the Cork GAA Clubs Draw last Monday night. The Draw was held in Rathcormac Community Hall and while it was a very bad night there was a great turn out with plenty tea and craic. Well done to the Rovers on a great good night.

Puc Fada on St Stephen’s Day.

The Juvenile Club will be holding the annual Puc Fada on St Stephen Day gathering at the Community Centre around 10.30 am to 11 am and pucking off around the stately walls of the village. There will be real hurling skill required as one endeavours to get around a course of four crossroads before returning to the Centre for some refreshments. Very popular in recent years and no doubt there will be a big turn out again this year.

Castlelyons Students involved in Fitzgibbon Cup 2017.

We have an interest in the Fitzgibbon Cup again this year as Colm Spillane has made a good recovery from a nasty cruciate injury early last year and his brother Anthony is hurling well as is Jack Barry and all three are on the UCC panel who are in a reasonable Group with UCD, University Ulster and Maynooth University. Alan Fenton is on the CIT panel and their group is tough enough and includes UL, NUIG, DCU St Patrick's. These games will be starting early in the new year and we wish the lads the best.

Tough luck on St Colman’s in Dr. O Callaghan Cup Final.

As D Paper said “conditions were better suited to ducks than hurlers” and unfortunately in a thigh game St Colman’s lost out by the narrowest of margins 0-11 to 0-11. Our own lads Jamie O Leary, Niall O Leary and Barry Murphy all did very well and, indeed, all players were heroes for playing in such appalling conditions. There was a huge Colman’s Panel for the game as there was 51 players listed our other panel members on it were John Paul Murphy, Mark Spillane, James Kearney, David Morrison and Seamus Moroney has been involved as well. There are some mighty young hurlers in this strong panel and we look forward to the New Year with confidence as St Colman’s take on CBC Cork in the quarter final of the Harty Cup. The other quarter final games are Thurles CBS V Our Lady’s Templemore; DLS Waterford V Nenagh CBS and Ardscoil Rís V Midleton CBS. These quarter final games are scheduled to be played on Wednesday January 11th, 2017.

Great reopening for Club Bar.

The Castlelyons GAA Club Bar reopened after a refurbish and new management on Saturday night last and was well supported by all members. One of the oldest Centers in the area it is the focal point of all social activity and great to have a bit of craic again. Well done to all concerned.

Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Draw, 2017.

The draws were made for the championships 2017 at the recent County Convention and our focus was on the Premier IHC so our opponents for 2017 are Kanturk. They are a tough enough opposition laced some county senior, intermediate and U21 players and will be very anxious to do well themselves this year. However, Colm Spillane, our county man, is on the mend after missing out last year and, indeed, we had a lot of injuries. Darragh Lawlor has returned from Boston after an Intern Program in Strength and Conditioning in the prestigious Harvard University. He is now giving the boys a hand with the new Gym and, hopefully, he will be available to us this year as he is a man with a good paw and can take his score well. The word is the intent and commitment is serious for the coming year from our lads so we wish Mick Spillane, Manager and Colm Crowley, trainer with John McCarthy, selector the best for 2017 and, of course, the lads themselves as they strive for success.
