Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Club Notes: 10.10.2016 2016-10-18 08:29:00

U7/U8’s;

On Saturday October 1st our U7’s & U8’s travelled to Lisgoold to partake in their end of season blitz. Under the guidance of Sean Cotter and Conor Hickey, the lads played extremely well and held their own throughout their three games. They played teams from Carrig na Bhfear, Whites Cross and Lisgoold and were successful in all three matches. They came home with both the U7 & U8 Lisgoold Blitz Cups, much to everyone’s delight. Special thanks to all the parents that travelled on the day. The boys had a great day and were delighted to be awarded medals prior to the Cup Presentations.

U9/U10’s:

After a fantastic year, we will conclude the year with a final Passport Skills training session this weekend. The boys have gained great skill and experience throughout the year and with a few new additions to the panel, we are looking forward to next year already. Saturday will see the boys complete their skills passport for 2016, which has been of great benefit to them all.

Thank you to all the parents for their continued support throughout the season, from bringing children to matches to helping out at training sessions. It was very much appreciated.

 U12;

Last Friday our U12 hurlers took on Aghada in their own back yard for a crucial league play-off. We had experience of playing Aghada already this year when in the first round of the league they came to us and gave out a bit of a lesson on how to win games. They went on to win all their league games, and with a big panel of players, were deserving of top spot in the table.

We were hoping that since the first game, we would have learned a bit and having had some good results recently, we thought we might give them a game at least. It turned out to be a cracker of an U12 game with both sides going flat out for the full match. Unfortunately, after some great scoring and defending on both sides Aghada got a goal with the very last puck of the game to win it and when the whistle blew as the sliotar hit the Castlelyons net, we had to bow out of the league. It was a tough way to lose but we showed enough to suggest that if we get that close again we might have better luck next time.

On the night our panel was: Aaron Fenton, Cormac Fleming, William Verling, Patrick Dooley, Gearoid O Sullivan, Marc Callanan, Anthony Moron, Mark Cullinane, Leon Shanahan, Colin Dolan, Mathew Rosner, Oisin Morrisson, Cees Kowenbourg, Olan Lenehan, Jack Cremin and Brian Spillane.

Training continues on Tuesday night with a match planned at home against Lisgoold on Friday night at 7.30pm. We hope to see the same great support we have received all year, for the last match of the season.

 U13/U14;

Our U13’s headed to Ballyhooly on Saturday last to take part in the Finn Leahy’s Memorial Blitz. It was a fabulous morning for hurling and great to get some game time at this stage of the season. Our hurlers played three tough matches against Tallow, Bruff and Ballyhooly. They won their first match but lost out in the following two. Well done to everyone that took part in the day and thanks to all the parents that travelled. We are hoping to compete in an U14 Hurling Blitz in Fermoy this weekend. Confirmation will be sent to parents by text.

 U18’s;

Our minors were in action on Saturday against Ballygiblin in the Minor A County Final replay. After an epic comeback the previous week, which saw the Castlelyons side come back from a ten point deficit twice to draw the game, expectations were high. We welcomed John Paul Murphy back into the team after a nasty injury received against Kilbrittain in the semi-final. This meant Conor Mc Carthy was back in midfield after playing a blinder replacing John Paul in goal, the previous week. It was Ballygiblin who put the first score on the board with a point after two minutes of play, however Niall O Leary was quick to respond with a cracker of a point not twenty seconds later. Keith O Leary knocked over two great points before Ballygiblin slipped in a goal in the seventh minute. Ian Riordan blasted over a lovely point from play before Ballygiblin responded with two more points to keep them narrowly ahead. Over the following five minutes Keith hammered home a further three points, levelling the sides for a fourth time, before Ballygiblin scored four of their own in a three minute spell. In the first minute of injury time, Barry Murphy took on the back line and scored a great point before Keith put over his sixth point of the half, as the half time whistle blew. It ended with a half time score of Ballygiblin 1-07 Castlelyons 0-09.

Similar to the first half, Ballygiblin opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play before Keith banged over two to level the score. It was point for point from here on in, with a battle ensuing for every ball. Ballygiblin scored a couple of points and a goal before the driving force of Keith and Niall O Leary responded with a point and a superb rocket of a goal. It was all level in the 28th minute of play when Ballygiblin scored a point to take them into the lead. The boys kept fighting but just couldn’t manage to get that additional point. The Castlelyons lads put in a gallant second half display, however they came up a point short and Ballygiblin were the winners on the day. The final score line read Ballygiblin 2-13 Castlelyons 1-15.

Team; John Paul Murphy, Mark Henley, Seamus Moroney, Redmond Walsh, Conor Mc Carthy, Niall O Leary (1-01), Peter Roche, Jamie O Leary, Ian Riordan (0-01), James Kearney, Barry Murphy (0-01), Pearse Varner, David Morrison, Keith O Leary (0-12), Alex Henley, Mark Spillane, Andrew O Neill, Michael Buckley, Jack Ronayne, Shane O Flynn, Eoin O Neill, James Mc Carthy, Jack Kenny.

The lads may have lost out by a single point, but they never lost their tough resolve. This team were the real winners in the hearts of every Castlelyons supporter on Saturday. And so it was back to Castlelyons to celebrate their fantastic season with their mentors and supporters. This team has given us some incredible days out this year and it was a privilege to spend the evening with them and commend their achievements for 2016 to date. Well done to each and every player on the panel, they have made their club and parish very proud this weekend. Their hurling season continues on Tuesday night with an away match to Ballygarvan in the league semi-final and we wish them all the best.
