Castlelyons Camogie Notes 25.06.2016 2016-08-26 10:10:00

This week sees our Junior Ladies playing in the Junior C Championship Semi Final against Blarney. With a final date, time and venue yet to be confirmed at the time of going to press, please keep an eye on our social media sites and notice board for updated details. All support would be greatly appreciated on the day.

These ladies have had a very impressive year to date. After a number of years of almost getting there, all their training, hard work and dedication is reaping the rewards for them this year. They won the Junior C Camogie League, in a highly competitive match against Ballinora on May 31st, on a very tight score line of Castlelyons 4-09 to Ballinora 2-10.

They started their championship season on July 5th, away against Ballinora in Ballinora. This match was always going to be a tough one based on the standard of the league final a month previous. However, the girls trained hard and were up for the challenge, finishing on a great score line of Ballinora 1-05 Castlelyons 2-11.

Followed closely on July 15th was their next championship match away to Aghada. The intensive training was continuing to show, as the ladies had an impressive win. With the final whistle blown, the score was Aghada 0-01 Castlelyons 1-16.

Next up they played Kilworth at home, on July 25th. Having played Kilworth earlier in the season in a challenge match, they didn’t underestimate them coming into this match. Despite Kilworth only forming their Camogie Club this year, they have fantastic numbers and some great talent coming through. It was a challenging encounter and Kilworth were tough opponents, never giving up to the final whistle. We finished on a comfortable score line of Castlelyons 7-16 Kilworth 1-00.

In round 4, they were up against Millstreet. This was always going to be a difficult match. Having played Millstreet, always away, over the past three years, the ladies had yet to come away with a win. However, with home advantage and much preparation Castlelyons lined out on August 16th with a strong and determined squad. With great support from the side lines, they quickly settled with a goal and a couple of points. Millstreet provided strong opposition and kept themselves in the game. We were up at half time, however, Millstreet came out in the second half and scored a couple of goals to even the score. Nevertheless, our girls didn’t let this deter them, and worked tirelessly with Emily Sexton, Marie Daley and Aishling Hartnett scoring a flurry of superb goals. The final whistle blew on a score line of Castlelyons 5-10 Millstreet 2-09.

This was a fantastic win for the Junior Ladies, who have worked so hard over the last number of months and years. This team has come through a tough couple of years, where numbers were extremely tight to even make a team. This year, has seen the tide turn and with an abundance of players, competition to make this team is fierce. It’s great to see the stalwarts of the club, Marie Murphy, Niamh Barry, Emily Sexton, Isabel Fenton, Aishling Hartnett, Aine O Brien, Marie Daly,  Michelle Hartnett, Louise Crowley and Teresa O Connor (to name a few) coupled with our Cork Stars Melissa O Sullivan, Aibhin O Sullivan and Billie Shanahan reaping the rewards of a great season to date. Being a mentor/selector for this team is no easy feat and congratulations must go to Joe Hartnett and his team, who have continuously supported this team through thick and thin over the past couple of years.

So please support the Junior Ladies in the Semi Final against Blarney this weekend – they certainly deserve to be there!
