U14’s Fall at Final Hurdle

Yet again this magic group of girls defy odds and continue to give us enjoyment every time they play. On Monday 11th of July we took to the field in the Semi-final of the U14 County League against Kilmeen/Kilbree at Ballinure. With this being the holiday season and some injuries we entered the tie with almost a third of the panel unavailable. Having drawn with Kilmeen in the Feile earlier in the year with nearly our full squad, the odds where very against us, but somebody forgot to tell the girls this. In front of our ever growing support the match started, with Castlelyons playing up the hill and against the wind. After some tense moments in our defence we got the ball to our forwards who began to make trouble for the Kilmeen defence.  Mid way through the first half we open our account with our first goal, Kilmeen as we knew they would, responded quickly with a goal of their own shortly afterwards. After some tenacious defending by our backs Kilmeen were awarded two frees which where expertly converted leaving us trailing by two points. But our girls not to be outdone mustered an attack on our opponent’s goal to score our second goal. At Half time Castlelyons lead 2-0 to 1-02. Water was the order of the day at half time with each girls having given their all in the heat of battle.

After some positional changes the team took the field for the second half. Castlelyons began the second half with a renewed emphasis and had added a further two goals within the first 10 minutes. Credit to Kilmeen they responded with a goal of their own but at this stage Castlelyons where dominant in most areas of the pitch. Castlelyons added further goals before the final whistle with our opponents managing to register a further two points. On the final whistle we were victorious and had qualified for the League County Final, on a score Castlelyons 7-0 to Kilmeen / Kilbree 2-04. After some correspondence during the night we were informed that our opponents would be Rockban in Ballinlough on Saturday 16th at 11.15. Having played Rockban earlier in the year in the group stages, our previous match had been a brilliant battle with us narrowly winning, we knew these opponents would prove difficult. With the panel still depleted for numbers and loosing another girl due to illness we lined out to face Rockban in a pristine venue in front of a large Castlelyons support.

Rockban raced into an early lead scoring two goals within the first ten minutes, this stunned our girls but they never dropped their heads and began to create opportunities of their own. We pressed hard but the Rockban defence was outstanding especially their full back and goalie keeping our forwards out. We did manage to register two points before half time but Rockban added a further goal and two points from long distance. As the half wore on our girls began to create scoring opportunities but we never capitalised on our opportunities.  Castlelyons started the second half with renewed heart and vigour, and immediately form the throw in we were denied a goal by a brilliant save. But Castlelyons continued to exert pressure and dominate the possession but we could not get the elusive score to start the recovery. Rockban eventually registered two further goals in the closing minutes to run out winners. At the post match presentation Olivia Sheehan, our captain, accepted our runners up medals and congratulated Rockban on their victory. In what was an amazing week for the club, each and every girl involved in the two matches played with their heart and exceptional talent. The club is extremely proud of their efforts and know they will bounce back better than ever.  The panel for the matches;
