Castlelyons Camogie Club Notes 17th May 16 2016-05-19 10:37:00

Juvenile GAA and Camogie 1916 event.

Well done to everyone who participated in our 1916 celebrations over the weekend it was a fabulous occasion and huge credit is due to all the organising committees for their hard work and dedication.

U14 Camogie.

On Monday 9th May our U14 team registered their second win in the league. Having home advantage on what was a dull and wet night these girls fought extremely hard for their win. Midleton where first to score with a point from a free but Castlelyons responded as many times before with a goal to take the lead. Scores were hard fought on the night and Midleton were formidable opponents. At the break we lead 2-01 to 1-02. The second half continued as the first, with every ball being hard fought for and every girl having to give 110%.  Castlelyons managed to add 2-01 to the scoreboard in the second half but Midleton were not to be outdone and added a goal and two points. For the final few minutes Midleton forwards laid siege on our goals but as on numerous occasions our defence stood solid and held them at bay.  We eventually won in what was a tremendously exciting match on a score of 4-02 to 2-03.

Panel on the night:

As part of the Castlelyons 1916 Commemorations on Saturday 14th May we played our neighbours Kilworth in a friendly match.  We would like to thank Kilworth for accepting our invitation to play and it was wonderful to such large numbers and level of enthusiasm shown by a new club. The match was played in a very competitive sporting manner with all the girls enjoying themselves.

On Saturday May 21st we have been invited to participate in a U14 camogie blitz in Abbeyside, Dungarvan. The blitz will consist of 6 team, 3 from Waterford, 2 from Kilkenny and Castlelyons representing Cork. Girls will be contacted with further information on the day. Fixtures – U14 Camogie League V St Fanahans in Castlelyons 7.00pm Monday 23rd May.

Minor camogie

Our minor girls took to the field on Saturday afternoon last to partake in Castlelyons 1916 Commemorativecelebrations. It was however a match of a different kind with mixed teams of hurlers and camogie players from the U16 and U18 teams. Team tactics and positional changes were crucial to team managers Mark O Flynn and Shane Hickey. The match was played in a very competitive manner and referee John Lenehan was busy keeping up with the play. Scoring was tight throughout and each score was quickly replied to. Goals were the order of the day with Mark O Flynn’s team running out winners 5-02 to 4-01. It was a very enjoyable afternoons entertainment and there is no doubt that the mixed match will not only enhance the player’s skills but reinforce the enjoyment of the game. Mark O Flynn’s team: Seamus Maroney, Conor McCarthy, Cáit McCarthy, Billie Shanahan, Aoife Beausang, Rachel Murphy, Andrew O Neill, Michael Buckley, Jack Ronayne Shane Hickey’s team; Niamh O Donovan, Grainne McCarthy, Sarah Murphy, Pearse Varner, Deirdre Barry, Jack Kenny, Shane Flynn, David Morrison

Junior Camogie

The Junior girls hosted Clonakilty on Sunday evening last in their last outing of their league campaign. Having already represented the club in the parade for the 1916 Commemorative celebrations the beautiful sunshine capped off what was an already fantastic day for the community. The juniors having won all their matches so far, were hoping to get another win under their belts, and keep their clean sheet. This match however was to prove to be the girls toughest test. The early exchanges were fairly even however our girls showed more composure and having gained in confidence from our previous wins were first to score. However the Clonakilty girls slowly but surley began to impose presence and stayed in touch, Half time score Castlelyons 1- 10 Clonakilty 0-3. Both teams enjoyed periods of dominance during the 2nd half with Castlelyons being more fruitful. The Clonakilty girls plugged away and with more and more confidence scored a goal. Not to be out done our girls continued to score and ran out worthy winners on score line 2-13 to 1-08. We now move on to the semi-finals stage of the league were we will meet Na Piarsaigh at home on Saturday with throw in at 7.30pm. There is no doubt that for Joe and Ger the talent is there to challenge for major honours this season.

U6, 7 & 8's

Our younger girls have been very busy over the last few weeks with a number of matches against Ballygiblin and Ballyduff with all of our players from U6 to U8 getting plenty of game time. The girls are also training in between matches to improve their skills.

Last Saturday the girls took part in a mixed blitz with the juvenile club as part of the 1916 commemoration celebrations - thanks very much to all the girls, their parents and all the volunteers who helped to make this day such a great day.

Last week also saw the 1st session of 6 for "Come Hurl With Me" with Annette Fitzgerald doing the training for the adults. We will continue with training/matches twice a week when possible with all sessions/matches being advised by text.

Trip To Tipp

Congratulations to all the girls who took part in the Trip to Tipp on Saturday and a huge thanks to Michele Griffin, Willie Casey, Theresa O Connor, Clodagh Barry & Anna Greaney who travelled with the girls.

Tuck Shop - Thanking you for your support!

Our Camogie Club relies on fundraising to cover our day to day running costs. These include buying kits, paying referee’s, entering competitions, partaking in coaching/training etc. Every cent Castleyons Camogie club can raise is vital to surviving and enhancing the club. To achieve these aims we decided last year to undertake a number of initiatives one of which was the “Tuck Shop”.  As our club has no one official sponsor it can be difficult at times to find the monies needed to promote the development of the club and to this end we are grateful to everyone who supports our “Tuck Shop”. Thanks must go to John Healy, Donal O Leary and Kieran McGann from the adult club for their continued support. It was great to see so many people at the Adult club 1916 Commemorations coming in and catching up over a cup of tea whilst in turn supporting Castlelyons Camogie and to this end we are truly grateful. So next time you purchase from Michelle, Clodagh, Pam, or Urusla at the “Tuck Shop” remember your money is supporting every camogie player and enhancing the future of Castlelyons Camogie. We would ask all parents to try and support the club lotto where tickets are now available to purchase in the “Tuck Shop”.
