Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 25.4.16 2016-04-26 22:06:00

Footballers take the extra time to reach East Cork Junior A Football Semi Final.

Castlelyons 1-11 Galtee Gaels 1-9.

Our Junior A Footballers hit for Dungourney on Sunday evening for our game with Glenbower Rovers in the East Cork Junior A Football Championship Quarter Final.  We were confident in the fact that we had done some preparation and had shown a very positive attitude in our first round win over Glenville. The evening was fine, dry with little breeze and James Birmingham the Reitóir.

Ml Spillane did well as SweeperWe set up with a two-man full forward line as Ml Spillane was in the now new position of “an peileadóir ag scuabadh”.  Eoin Maye and Tom Carroll were strong on both wings and Darragh Lawlor was winning good possession early on.  Ronan Bransfield pointed a close in free early after a foul on Maye. Then Glenbower began to come into the game and Kieran Lane was winning a lot of ball around the middle for them.  They had a good point from full forward Brian McCarthy and two wides.  Our backs broke out at times and laid off good ball and Alan Fenton snapped up two points from play on the sixth and ninth minute.

However, we seem to lose shape and Glenbower completely took over for about 15 minutes and despite massive possession they only put 0-2 on the board and had seven wides.  Now while some of their shooting was poor fair play to our backline who tackled strong and made scoring difficult as Cian O Leary and Colm Barry manned the centres well with the sweeper Ml Spillane picked up plenty broken ball.  We began to work really hard towards the end of the first half and turn over ball.  Ronan Bransfield put over a free from a difficult angle.  On the stroke of half time we were awarded a free about 55 yards out and out came our goalie Stephen Hickey and lined it up.  As Mick Spillane, himself a good one in his day, commented “Brian Sheehan of Kerry wouldn’t put it over” but over she sailed for a mighty score to put us 0-5 to 0-3 at half time.

The second half started with Glenbower closing the gap as Sean Long put over a point.  Ronan Bransfield pointed for us after a foul on Jack Barry who was winning a nice bit of ball in the forwards.  We were living on scraps but showed deadly accuracy from both frees and play as Ronan Bransfield pointed a free after a hotly disputed pick off the ground by Glenbower. Allan Fenton again done with a point from play. During this time Glenbower four wides and surprisingly went for goal from a 14 yard free which was saved.  However, entering the last seven minutes we were under massive pressure as they pointed a free.  Then they got the breakthrough as Sean Long goaled for them and Kieran Lane pointed a free to level it on time at 1-6 to 0-9 amidst might excitement.

The Reitóir indicated extra time and as we were after relinquishing a 5-point lead it was game on for Glenbower.  However, we were up for it as Anto Spillane got on top at midfield and banged over a point.  The same player was wide again and Aidan O Sullivan had a goal effort saved as Sean Long levelled it again for Glenbower.  Our management were astute in their player rotation methodology during the game as Robbie Feeney and Alan Fenton went on for Jack Barry and Dunny.  Into the last half of extra time and Sean Long pointed again for Glenbower.  But then came the big breakthrough as Aidan O Sullivan raced through and shot for goal.  Their goalie saved well but the ball rebounded and Aidan blasted the rebound to the roof of the net and we were on our way despite the fact that Kieran Lane got a late point for them.   So it was ours at the long whistle in extra time on a score 1-11 to 1-9.

Congrats to all the players and well done to our Manager Donal O Leary and selectors Maurice Carroll and James Moroney as their tactics work a dream in a dour struggle that demanded a high work rate. We are now in the semi-final awaiting the winners of Aghada v Ballinacurra and have a reasonable chance of making it to the final.

The game was refereed by James Birmingham, Bride Rovers, he was vigilant in that he checked one or two players on mouthguards.  He put the advantage rule to good use and allowed play flow.  A referee will not be everyone’s favourite as people do want this and that but overall did a very good job.

Hurlers play Kildorrery in County Intermediate Hurling League.

Due to the football preparations our hurling training was limited last week.  However, the hurlers are on the go again this week and we travel to Kildorrery this coming Friday evening to take on the home team in the Cork Intermediate Division 2 Hurling League. We are presently fourth in the League with three wins (6pts) from four games and going fairly well while Kildorrery are pointless from the same amount of games.

However, this game is hard to call as Kildorrery have been really unlucky in their last two outings losing both games by just one point.   They were leading Carrigaline by 1-11 to 0-12 with virtually time up but were caught by a late goal.  Of course, Carrigaline gave us a bit of a lesson early in the year.  We are in fairly good form at present and Anto Spillane seems to have regained his fitness after a recent eye injury as he was in good form in our football win on Sunday evening.  However, Declan Varner suffered a nasty ankle injury in that game and we wish him a speedy recovery.  The Championship is getting near and a win is vital and your support will help in the build-up so see you in Kildorrery on Friday evening 29th April at 7.30 pm.

Hurlers take on Imokilly in Father Smith Cup

Comóradh 100 BliainLá na gClubanna is on Sunday 8th May, 2016 and Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Caisleán Uí Liathán will participate in a special way.   The Club have decided that we will use this as a special day to commemorate the 1916 Rising by having some activity to mark the Comóradh.  Our Intermediate hurlers are taking on Imokilly at 6.30 pm for the Father Smith Cup and there will be some Juvenile and Camogie exhibition games.  There will be some formalities prior to the game and hopefully an exhibition of memorabilia in the hall afterwards. More details next week.

Congratulations.

Congratulations to our hurler and footballer Ronan Fenton who scooped the Fermoy Weekly Lotto Jackpot of €20, 000 and received his winnings last week from their Chairman Brendan Keane.  Our Lotto people say this is the second time the Fermoy Weekly Lotto at €20, 000 came to Castlelyons Parish as Seanie O Sullivan of our former Squash team was a previous winner.  So who knows the next winner but by buying a Fermoy Lotto ticket you could be the one.  Of course, we sell many tickets in town and they can reverse the winnings too.
