Intermediate Notes W.E. 23.11.15 2015-11-24 18:18:00

Good turnout for Club Annual General Meeting.

We had our annual General Meeting on Saturday night in the Community Centre on Saturday night.

When our Chairman John Healy called all to order there was a very large crowd and a very strong turnout of players.

The Secretary, Michael Barrett, gave an outstanding detailed report of all Club Activities for the year. This included the following:-

  • He gave a brief outline of the activities of the Intermediate Hurlers, the Footballers, and the Minors for the year and thanked the players and management teams.
  • He thanked his fellow Officers, Chair John Healy, Treasurer Donal O Leary and Pro Denis Fenton for their work during the year and all the other officers with various responsibilities.
  • He complimented the Juvenile and Camogie Clubs who continue to promote our games and introduce the children of the Parish to the game.  He noted that they work very hard.
  • He thanked the Juvenile Club for the purchase of a new electronic Scoreboard for Páirc an t’Athair Peadar O’Laoghaire and a major contribution to the sanding of the Pitch.
  • He outlined that there were a strong number of players involved with County teams, Development teams and Imokilly teams during the year.  This augurs well for the future.
  • He paid a special thanks to the CES workers under the leadership of Assumpta Mangan who kept the whole place so well for the year and to Bridie Milward who took bookings and prepared the rooms for meetings in a most efficient manner.
  • He outlined the value of the Club Lotto, the great work of the sellers and the commitment of the Lotto team under the stewardship of Michal Hegarty and to all who offer their assistance in any way.
  • He had a special word of thanks for our main Sponsors South Coast Logistics and all others who sponsored and made contributions to the club during the year.
  • Regrettably, Michael offered condolences to all who lost loved ones during the year particularly our late president Ger Barry R.I.P., and to Pat Fenton R.I.P., both excellent men for the Club.  Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go léir.
  • He was most complimentary to his fellow officers, the committee and congratulated those who got engaged and married during the year.

Treasurer’s Report

Donal O Leary, our treasurer, was our next man up.  Donal’s financial statement and balance sheet together with bank balances and other details was given with a facility of detail and accuracy to such an extent what when he completed his deliberations there were no questions.  As treasurer Donal O Leary has given leadership in the finance and he has ensured quality initiatives that have yielded the few bob and we are so thankful to him for this work.

Our Chairman John Healy then called on our team managers for their annual reports.

Dave Hoare, Manager of the Intermediate team: - stated that they had a good win in the PIHC win over Kanturk in the first round and in the draw got a bye straight to the quarter final but were defeated by Ballinhassig in a disappointing game. This game was three months later which was a bit of a drawback. The format of the club championships is currently under review by the County Board and no doubt we will have an input. The Intermediate team was competitive in division two of the hurling league as they played nine games, won five, drew two, lost two and just missed out in qualifying for the league final.  Dave thanked his fellow selectors Colm Crowley, Coach and Ciarán McGann, Selector, also Shane Hickey, Sean Kenny and Peter Murphy who all helped out.  He stated that the Coach was not available this year and Ciarán McGann was hoping to go back hurling and Dave himself was not going forward as Manager but he did enjoy the year and thanked the officers and supporters for the turnout during the year.

Donal Barry our Junior Hurling Manager: -  outlined how the junior team lost the first round to Ballinacurra in the championship and then had wins over Erins Own and Killeagh but we were defeated in the quarter final by Sarsfields. The team maintained their status in the East Cork JHL division two league.  We played six games, won two and lost four.  For Donal the ongoing issue with the second team (junior) hurling is the number of players available for games despite the fact that there are more numbers for various reasons they are not always available. Donal was anxious that going forward all available players should be encouraged to play with the junior team.   Thanks to the players, Donal Barry and his selectors Ned Fitzgerald and James Maye for a great commitment during the year as this is what makes the club tick, getting out teams and enjoying the game.

Mick Spillane was next up with a report on a busy year as Manager of the U21 hurling and football teams: -   The U21 hurlers played in the East Cork U21 B hurling championship and had wins over great wins over Carraig na bhFear, Carrigtwohill and Cloyne and qualified to play Watergrasshill in the East Cork final.  This game was played in Rathcormac and after extra time we came out the wrong side of a proverbial cracker.  We had some injuries to key players which were a factor but the ‘Hill showed a great fighting spirit on the night.

Alan Fenton Capt U21 Footballers receiving the Cup from East cork chairman Dick FitzgeraldMick Spillane and his men had more luck with the U21 football team who had a great victory in the won East Cork B U21 championship defeating St Catherines, Glenbower Rovers and taking Castlelgoold in the final on a scoreline of Castlelyons 2-11 Castlelgoold 1-7. We lost to a strong Kilmeen outfit in the county.  It is always nice to have some success and thanks and well done to our lads who had a great year, winning the football and almost getting over the line in the hurling.  Thanks to Mick Spillane, Maurice Carroll, Anthony O Regan and David Cremin for all their work with the team.

The Junior Football team: - competed in the A Grade championship only and lost to both Fr O'Neill's and Carraig na bhFear.  The interest in the Junior football is weak and requires a review. Again thanks to the lads that played and again to Mick Spillane and, also his selectors Michael Barrett and Ciarán McGann who arranged the football

Jimmy O Leary was last up to give his report as manager of the minor teams in football and hurling teams: -   These teams participated in the ‘C’ Competitions (12 aside) only, due to lack of numbers.  We participated in the football championship, only,  and in the league and championship in hurling.  We were defeated by Cobh in the football championship.  In the hurling we had mixed results in the League playing four games winning two and losing two.  However we have a few cracking games in the hurling championship.

Castlelyons Minor Captain Cian Donnellan receiving the Rebel Óg East Minor TrophyWe then headed for Lisgoold to play the Rebel Óg Eastern Minor Hurling final versus Cobh.  The 12 aside games can be very open with lots of room on a pitch and we raced into a ten point lead at half time and ran out winners on the 3-14 to Cobh’s 4-8.  This was a great win for the lads, their management team and supporters.  We played very well against Kildorrery in the county semi final in Fermoy and although we ran up a strong score in the end it flattered us somewhat as there was little between the teams for a long time and we received a few serious injuries.

However, onto the county final and who did we meet but our ould mates Cobh.  The game was in Castlemartyr in glorious sunshine and a well prepared pitch.  We went in a confident mode but a number of our top lads were injured going into the game as with just a week since the semi final time was not on our side.  We knew this game would be tough as it was a repeat of the Eastern Region Minor Final which Castlelyons had won narrowly after a great game.  This time Cobh took the final on a score of Castlelyons 2-13 Cobh 6-8.  All in all this was a good year for our minors as although short in numbers we played as a club and full marks to Jimmy O Leary, Dave Hegarty, Shane Hickey and Ger McCarthy as they did a lot of hard work with the team.

Kieran McGann, Cultural Officer: -  gave an account of Scór and while we did not enter Scór na bPaistí, Mr Nelius De Roiste, Castlelyons N.S. and Ms Stephanie Howard, Kilmagnier N.S. are preparing teams for the coming year.

The East Cork Scór na nÓg Finals for East Cork were held in Lisgoold recently and we had Amy Clarke in Amhránaíocht Aonair, Seamus, Declan and Óisin Morrisson in Ceol Uirlise.  Anna Greaney, Abbie Quirke, Shauna Mullen and Ann Marie Quirke took part in Tráth na gCeisteanna Boird and all done very well with the Morrisson runners up to eventual county winners Glanmire.

We had a great night of fun and strong participation in the East Cork Scór Sinsir Finals. Thanks to Stacey Cronin and Dick O Brien in Amhránaíocht Aonair, Eilis Uí Bhriain in Scéalaíocht and John Healy's Trath na gCeisteanna team who all did the club proud.  We got a runner up in the Solo Singing that night as Stacy Cronin brought down the house with a mighty version of the Banks as Béarla and Gaeilge.  There is good interest in Scór Sinsir again this year and we have already a Ballad Group preparing.

John Healy, our Chairman: -  was final with his closing Officer report and reiterated many of our Secretary Michael Barrett’s comments outlining that he was very proud to be chairman of a strong club like Castlelyons and he had a strong belief that we could bring the ultimate success of a County Championship shortly.

Neilly Spillane took the Chair for the Election of Officers and the following were elected: -

  • Life President: - Tom Joe Riordan
  • President: - Dave Hegarty
  • Vice Presidents: - Father Gerry Coleman, Seamus Sexton, Martin Dorgan and Donal O Connell.
  • Chairperson: - John Healy
  • Vice Chairperson: - Maurice Carroll.
  • Secretary: -  Michael Barrett
  • Assistant Secretary: - Donal Barry
  • Treasurer: - Donal O Leary
  • PRO : - Kieran McGann
  • Insurance Claims Officer: - James Maye
  • Children’s Officer: - Mike Griffin
  • County Board Delegates: - John Barrett and Kieran McGann
  • East Cork Board Delegates: - Seamus Sexton and Mark Murphy
  • Cultural Officer: - Kieran McGann
  • Safety Officer: - Kieran McGann
  • Health and Wellbeing Officer: - Tom Carroll
  • Committee: - James Moroney, Denis Fenton, Michael Spillane, Pat O Neill, Dave Hoare, Con Lawlor, Anthony O Regan, Robert Feeney, Allen O Regan, Ned Fitzgerald, Neilly Spillane, Jimmy O Leary, Peter Murphy, Michael O Donovan, James Tobin, Declan Spillane, Barry Fitzgerald, Ciarán McGann, John Linehan, and Shane Hickey.

No Motions: -  However,  there was lively discussion on the selection of a management team and coach for the intermediate hurling team for 2016.  As there was no nomination or declaration of interest from the floor there was a subcommittee (John Healy, Ml Barrett, Donal O Leary, Ciarán McGann and Colm Spillane) formed to select the manager and coach.

There was a very good suggestion by Dave Hegarty that structures be embellished as there was a need for more sub committees to deal with various issues.  John Healy Chairperson outlined that this would be considered at the next meeting.

John also thanked Denis Fenton who had completed three great years service as PRO and did not go forward for the coming year.

Last Man Standing

It is great to see a number of enthusiastic young members of the Intermediate Hurling Panel presently carrying out a feasibility study on establishing a Gymnasium with strength and conditioning equipment for teams.  While there are some interesting pointers for study they have kicked off already, most importantly, with a fundraiser called the "Last Man Standing" started up and for the great value of €10 should lead to lots of Saturday/Sunday excitement. If interested (hope you are) contact Anto Spillane 0863660603. This is an exciting proposal and hopefully will come to fruition shortly.

Higher Education GAA Senior Hurling Division 1 League

UCC 1-21:  Mary I (Limerick) 2-13.  This game was played in the UCC Grounds in cork last Wednesday night and after a good game UCC came out on top by five points.   Our men Colm Spillane lined out at full back, Anto Spillane at corner forward and Jack Barry as Sub goalie all for UCC while Colm Barry lined out at full back for Mary I.  They all played well and Anto bagged 1-2.  Great to have four lads involved in Higher Education hurling and we wish them well.

Congrats to St Colmans College.

St Colmans had a very encouraging win last Wednesday in Group C of the Dr Harty Cup as they saw off Nenagh CBS on the score of 2-14 to 0-10.  Great to see three Casgtlelyons lads on the side, Niall O Leary at centre back, Jamie O Leary, his brother, at centre forward and Keith O Leary, their cousin, at full forward.  All the lads done well and we wish the best of luck to Colmans in the next round versus Doon.
