Castlelyons v Kanturk in PIHC this Sunday at 7 pm in Castletownroche

Castlelyons take on Kanturk in the first round of the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship on this Sunday in that fabulous venue Castletownroche at 7 pm.

Aiden O Sullivan - Hopefully fit for the PanelThis is the match that has been targeted by team and management for some time but injuries have interfered with our preparations.  Nevertheless most of the lads have come through with Ciarán McGann a definite non starter due to cruciate and Aidan O Sullivan still a serious doubt but all the others beginning to come back to form.

Kanturk, one of the oldest GAA clubs in the county formed back in 1882 have made an outstanding contribution to Cumann Luthchleas Gael.  I remember former great footballers Mick O Loughlin and Johnny O Mahony playing with Cork circa 1967.  Indeed, as a young lad at home in Clare I remember well the Ballyvaughan Notes in The Clare Champion with a heading Cork football Star on holidays in Corkscrew Hill as Mick O Loughlin, Cork and Kanturk Star came to stay with his uncle.

Sure that was many years ago but come to today and Kanturk are primed once again with County Stars again who now wield the Camán as Anthony Nash, Lorcán McLaughlin and Aidan Walsh are doing their club and county proud.  Indeed, Kanturk have many other good hurlers as well.  This all leads them to be clear favourites and similar to the Ballyhea game last year we are up against it.

This will, no doubt, be an intriguing battle as Castlelyons will have to fight from that underdog position and it will be a serious test of the hurling ability and character of our panel. All the lads and the management team, despite occasional crack, have put in serious work  since the first training session back in January and having played numerous league and challenge matches.

Cian O Leary - Teak Tough BackAs an observer I must take off my hat and salute the effort of so many of the lads who drive long distances from Dublin, Limerick, Portlaoise, Cork, and other places to make training, many who are students and have exams, etc.  On the plus side this has led to holding a strong panel with great camaraderie and good team spirit in the camp.

We wish the Manager Dave Hoare, his colleagues, and the team the very best in this real test. Finally, let’s ensure that great traditional support for the Club is there on Sunday as it promises to be a battle to the finish - Mol an óige agus tiochfaidh siad – Caisleán Uí Liatháin Abú.

Intermediate Hurling League - Castlelyons win by one to take two points.

Castlelyons    0-19    Charleville   0-18

We played Charleville in Round 7 of the IH League on Friday last in Castletownroche. This was our last match before the Championship.  Management were looking for a strong committed performance against a Charleville team who are going very well this year. A heavy day’s rain cleared out in the evening to leave conditions dry and fine but the surface was greasy surface.   Players lost their footing at different stages but we must wear the proper studs and adjust to such conditions as Charleville held their ground very well. Overall, the Castletownroche pitch and development is a credit to the club and leads to good hurling.

Back to the game and it was played at a high intensity with Charleville showing why they were unbeaten in the League.  Teams were level at three points each after ten minutes when we had points from Colm Spillane, Anthony Spillane and Ronan Bransfield. As both sides scored some great points the teams were level again at seven points each after twenty minutes with points from Alan Fenton, Ronan Bransfield and Darragh Lawlor. We outscored Charleville by five points to one in the last ten minutes when we put some great moves together to score points from Ronan Bransfield, Darragh Lawlor, Anthony Spillane, Keith O Leary and Alan Fenton to go in leading at half time twelve points to eight points after a very good half hour of hurling.

The Barry Brothers call the shotsCharleville started the second half very well and had reduced our lead to a point after ten minutes when we seemed to lose our shape and conceded easy scores. Management made some positional and personnel changes which helped to tighten up our play and both sides exchanged scores for the rest of the match. Jack Barry in goals set up attacks with some very accurate puck outs, our defence played very well with some great performances from Colm Barry, Brian Carroll and Niall O Leary in the full back line and as the match went on our half back line of Leo Sexton, Timmy McCarthy and Keith O Leary played some great hurling. Center field of Robbie  Feeney Colm Spillane and with Tommy Carroll a great link between backs and forwards and set up scores with some great ball played into our forwards.

The match was level with fifteen mins to go after points from Alan Fenton and Anthony Spillane which made for an exciting finish. Ronan O Regan came off the bench to score a good point to give us the lead but Charleville rallied to lead by one point with time almost up. Everyone upped their game in the last few minutes and Colm Spillane levelled the match with a long range point before Alan Fenton's point from the right hand side line gave us a deserved victory. Well done to everyone involved on a great performance and the lift of a good victory before championship will work wonders for the team.
