Junior footballers defeated by three points.

Castlelyons 0-6 Fr O Neills 0-9

We played our first Junior A Football game in a few years last Sunday.  Having won the County Junior B Championship last year and more recently the East cork Under 21 B Championship there are expectations of a bit of a run this year.  So we took to the field for a first round meeting with Fr. O’Neill’s in Dungourney with a spring in our step.

Fr. O’Neill’s played with the aid of a very stiff breeze in the opening half.  We were going well and it was 0-4 to 0-2 to O Neill’s after twenty minutes with our scores coming courtesy of a free from Ronan Bransfield and a well taken effort from play from Alan Fenton.  Fr. O’Neill’s added two more points before the break and a four point deficit while playing with the elements for the second half did not look insurmountable.

However, our second half intensity was not great especially as we done so well in the first half. We struggled to reduce the deficit was reduced to three points on a few occasions.  We scored from placed balls on four occasions and did not really threaten Fr O Neill’s who ran out three point winners. We now play Carrig na bhFear in the second round with the game due to be played on weekend of 11th April.

Team: -  S. Hickey, C Lawlor, C O’Leary, L Moroney, E Maye, C Barry, T Carroll, S Moroney, D Lawlor, R Bransfield (0-2 f), A Fenton (0-4 , 0-3 f), A O’Sullivan, A O’Regan, R Fenton, S O’Sullivan.

Congratulations

Job done - the great JBM with 19 year Old AntoAnthony Spillane started for Cork Senior Hurlers in the National League Quarter Final versus Wexford in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday last. This is a mighty honour for Anto, his family and our Club.  Wearing the Red Jersey is the ultimate honour in hurling and especially getting a go on the senior team at 19 years of age - well done lad.

We have Jack Barry getting plenty of game time in the Under 21 Cork hurling challenges at the moment and we wish him the best in his endeavors on having a go for this panel.  He played well against Tipperary making a few good saves and spraying out good ball.

Niall O Leary is going well in the Minor Hurling Panel as Dinny Ring prepares his charges for battle with Anthony Daly’s Limerick in a game that takes place on Wednesday 8th April, 7 pm in Páirc Uí Rinn. We wish Niall the very best in his endeavors and what great times for our Club and the Parish.

Tom Carroll, Aidan O Sullivan and Shane Moroney are presently hurling on Mondays with Imokilly Seniors preparing for the first round of the Cork SHC versus Avondhu shortly.  Tom Carroll got a run with the Cork U21 team in a challenge game the other night versus Killeagh and done well.

Intermediate Hurling League Division 2

Castlelyons play Watergrasshill on Saturday 4th March in Watergrasshill at 6.00 pm.  With the championship beginning to creep nearer it is important that we keep up the progress of the last few games.  Of course, we need all our players and it is great to see some of our lads returning from injury so the best of luck to all.
