Our U21 Footballers take Jack Murphy Cup.

Castlelyons 2-11:  Castlegoold 1-07

Castlelyons won the East Cork U 21 B football championship on Friday night when we overcame Castlegoold in a fine game of football played on a lovely surface in Killeagh. The first half was a tight even affair with some great points scored by both sides. Niall O Leary had our first point of the match followed by points from Anthony Spillane and Alan Fenton to leave us leading by 0-3 to 0-2 after 10 mins. Jack Barry had a rasper saved by the Castlegoold goalie and then Shane Hickey came out of goals to plant a 45 between the posts after fifteen minutes to extend our lead. We had points in the last quarter from Anto Spillane, Niall O Leary and Alan Fenton we went in at half time leading by 0-8 to 0-5. This was a very even half and but for some excellent play from our Shane Hickey in goal, Declan Varner, Tommy Carroll and the backs we would not have been ahead.

We got a great start to the second half when in the first attack a shot from Ronan Bransfield came back off the post and who was there again, yes; Alan Fenton and he blasted to the net for a mighty goal. With Shane Moroney excelling at midfield we dominated possession in the second half and with further points from Niall O Leary, Anto Spillane and Ronan Bransfield we extended our lead to six points.

Niall O Leary on the again - scored 0-3 - well done. Our backs with Tommy Carroll and Declan Varner leading by example dominated and won ball after ball thus restricting Castlegoold to two pointed frees in the second half.   Anto Spillane rounded his marker to score a majestic goal with five minutes left and ended the game as a contest. It was great to see our young players like Jamie and Niall O Leary do so well and what a turn of pace and skill on occasions by Niall as he planted three sure points.  This shows the Juvenile supply line is working well too.

Castlegoold had the last score of the match to leave the final score Castlelyons 2-11 Castlegoold 1-7. Well done to this Panel and to the Management team of Mick Spillane, Anthony O Regan, Maurice Carroll and David Cremin on a fine victory.  The Jack Murphy Cup was presented to our Captain Alan Fenton after the game and he dedicated the victory to the late Gerry Barry our Club President who was a legend in his own playing days and an outstanding Clubman and supporter for so many years. What a roar and clap by our supporters when Alan finished his victory speech.

During the game Castlegoold's Declan Kelly had to leave the Pitch with a nasty knee injury and we wish him a speedy recovery from such an unfortunate injury.

Cork Intermediate Hurling League Division 2

Castlelyons 2-16:  Kildorrery 1-18

We collected our first win of this year’s league when we defeated Kildorrery on Sunday morning after a fine hours hurling. Kildorrery had the first two points of the match with Ronan Bransfield replying with a point for Castlelyons. Alan Fenton and Ronan Bransfield scored two more points to level the match on 0-3 each after ten mins. A ball out of defence from Colm Barry found Robbie Feeney in midfield who sent a great ball into Alan Fenton.

Alan took on his man and rounded him to plant a great team goal and give Castlelyons a three point lead. Kildorrery again levelled the match with three points before Tom Carroll came through from midfield to score a good point. All the team were working very hard for each other now and when Shane Moroney gave a great ball to Eoin Maye he scored another fine team goal. We had further points from Aidan O Sullivan, Alan Fenton, and Mike Spillane to close out the half on a score of Castlelyons 2-9 Kildorrery 0-13.

Mike Spillane done well on SundayKildorrery scored an early goal in the second half to take the lead again and we had to work very hard to stay with them. We had points from Mike Spillane and Ronan Bransfield to level the match after ten minutes. Unfortunately we lost a Brian Carroll to an unfortunate second yellow card.

This put serious pressure on us as Brian was missed but despite being down to fourteen men the lads dug in and we had some great performances in the backs and forwards. With Tommy Carroll hurling mighty and closing of the Kildorrery scoring line both Keith O Leary and Cian O Leary cleared great well in this half to set up scores for Alan Fenton, Mike Spillane, and Aidan O Sullivan as we remained two points ahead.

We finished out the match defending our lead and ended up good value for our victory. Well done to everyone involved on this important win and now let’s keep this run going.  The three points to date keep us in the top half of the league and still in with a great chance of promotion.  Great to have some of our men "back in harness" and no doubt in time we will have a full squad “on the bridle” shortly.

Team: - S O Sullivan, B Carroll, C Barry, C O Leary, A O Sullivan (0-4), L Sexton, Keith O Leary, T Carroll (0-1), R Feeney, E Maye (1-0) R Bransfield (0-3) , D Lawlor , A Fenton (1-5, 4f), S Moroney, M Spillane (0-3).

Long live King Henry – King Henry has finally retired.

This is an excerpt from Keith Duggan’s piece on Henry Shefflin written in the Irish Times of March 25.3.15.  Is there a lesson for us all in patience, development of skills and temperament but above all commitment if we want to succeed in the games we love? I thought I might include it as it is surely worth a read and maybe take heed at times.

“Decades before Henry was referred to as the “King” – and it’s a title that always conflicted with his views on the importance of the collective – he was regarded as an ordinary enough young prospect: a big lad mad for the game in a county teeming with such teenagers. “A fella with a big ould arse to throw in at full forward” was his lightly disparaging verdict on his days with St Kieran’s college.

The stick-craft was developed and refined in the squash court behind the family pub but it wasn’t until he was out of his teens that he went supernova in a way that mystified even his closest friends and that will only be satisfactorily explained in his biography this autumn. Between 1998 and 2000 he was transformed over a couple of seasons from a fringe candidate of the county under-21 team to the on-field conscience of the new model army which Brian Cody began to assemble.

Shefflin’s Kilkenny years – 1999 to 2014 – coincided with a hugely transformative period for the GAA, when it became a more expansive and slicker organisation whose games commanded huge media interest – and revenue. Shefflin was an able communicator, genial and full of common sense and always careful about his public utterances. He came across as such a rock of common sense that he inadvertently demystified some of his most extraordinary performances.

Made Kilkenny seem invincible

It wasn’t so much the decorative skill of John Troy or DJ Carey that set him apart, as much as the omnipotent range of his fundamental excellence. His marksmanship, his ball-winning, his passing, his tenacity, his temperament and, perhaps best of all, his instinct for delivering the plays that simultaneously steeled his Kilkenny teammates and withered the belief of opposing counties. He worked like a demon and hit hard. He made Kilkenny seem invincible”.

No doubt we will hear a little more as the years go by but he is surely a model for many as he played at the top of his game when the cause was greatest over so many finals and important games.

Congratulations.

Jack Barry - a go with Cork U21'sCongratulations to Jack Barry who made his debut in goal for the Cork U21 Hurlers against Tipperary out in the CIT Grounds last Sunday.  Jack played well in an intense game which Tipperary won by eight points.  Cork were short a few and David Geary, the Fermoy Star suffered an unfortunate knee injury.  We wish him a speedy return to the playing fields again.

Well done to Anthony Spillane who is a constant in the Cork Senior Hurling Panel over the League and hopefully will get the game time he so richly deserves shortly.

Congratulations, also, to Ciarán and Louise McGann on the birth of their baby boy last week. Another player for our club in years to come!
