Castlelyons take on Carrigtwohill in the East Cork JBF 2014-09-23 15:50:00

As a good Gael in Castlelyons once said about the hurling year “we are stowed for this year” and so we are more or less for 2014.   So now we have an opportunity to concentrate on football and we are in action on Friday night at 8pm under lights in Carrigtwohill as we take on the home team in the East Cork Junior B Football Championship.

Already crowned County Junior B Football Champions after a thrilling victory over Kilmeen some weeks ago we should be in good form for the game on Friday night.  We were disappointed and a bit down after our performance against Ballyhea in the hurling but they have since beaten a fancied Cloyne team and qualified for the final.  However, there is a lot left in the tank and we have it all to play for in East Cork.

Carrigtwohill are a tough outfit but we have both youth and experience and let’s give this a right go.  Lads we need your availability, commitment and spirit for what could yet be a great year for the Club.

The East Cork Championship will really assist in our preparation for the Munster Junior B Football Championship.  This is a mighty competition and involves all the Junior B Champions from each County and is played out in Knockaderry, Co. Limerick run by the home Club over a few weeks.  Incidentally, Charleville were unlucky to lose the final last year by one point to a Kerry side.  The first round is usually played around 1st November to there is time to plan and prepare and plan and who better than our own “Fitzmaurice & O Neill” in Mick Spillane and Michael Barrett.  We could have a great year yet!

Premier Intermediate Hurling League – Will a Draw suffice.

Castlelyons 2-19   Newcestown 1-22

Castlelyons and Newcestown played Round 10 of the Intermediate hurling league on Sunday morning in Newcestown. Even though we were short on numbers a great effort was put in by all that played.   We were very so unlucky not to take all the points which we needed to avoid relegation from Division 1 of the Intermediate league.

Anthony Spillane scored our first three points to give us a good start.  We scored again through Ronan Fenton and Jack Barry and when Anthony Spillane banged in a goal we were leading by 1-05 to 1-02 after fifteen minutes. Colm Spillane, Jack Barry and Alan Fenton added more points as both sides exchanged scores in a very fast free flowing game. Anthony Spillane got in for a second goal when he got to the rebound of a 21 yard free from Alan Fenton that was saved by the Newcestown goalkeeper and the sides went in level at halftime 2-09 to 1-12.

The second half was played out in the same fashion with both sides going for scores at every opportunity and with never more than 2 points between the sides this was a great contest. Anthony Spillane, Darragh Lawlor, Jack Barry, Tommy Carroll and Alan Fenton all had points in this half as the sides finished level 2-19 to 1-22 after 60 mins of great hurling. Well done to everyone that played with fantastic effort and commitment being shown by all.
