Intermediate Hurlers exit Championship.

Castlelyons 1-08: Ballyhea 2-13

Castlelyons and Ballyhea played out the replay of their County Quarter Final match in Kilworth on Sunday last. It was a match that promised plenty but did not live up to expectations as we failed to ignite from the start and Ballyhea ran out easy winners in the end. Playing with the wind in the first half we could not get going with too many passes being over hit, balls being dropped and a wide tally, that made double figures in the half, resulted in a frustrating performance.

Ronan Bransfield scored two great points from play and generally played very wellRonan Bransfield had two points in the first ten minutes.  A long range free from Colm Barry gave us a one point lead for the only time in the match. Ballyhea took the lead again and when they got in for a goal after 20 minutes and they were 5 points ahead and looking comfortable.

To our credit fought back and when a ball was sent across the goal to the inrushing Colm Spillane he batted it to the net we were back in the game. Anthony Spillane with a free closed out the scoring and we went in at half time with Ballyhea leading by 1-07 to 1-05 without playing well we were still in the match.

Ballyhea scored an early goal in the second half and from here on they dominated the play. We had points in this half from Anthony Spillane, Darragh Lawlor and Tom Carroll but try as we might we could not get in for the goal that we required. Ballyhea closed out the match winning on a score of 2-13 to 1-08. This was a disappointing end to our hurling championship season after such a high in reaching the final last year.

This year promised so much but never took off for this team with a run of injuries in the first half of the season resulting in us having a poor run in the league which in turn robbed the team of confidence. We have two league matches left to play so we will try and win these and with East Cork and Munster Junior B Football Championships yet to come our season is far from over.

Fundraising Draw Fantastic Success

The first of the clubs two Fundraising Draws was held in the Abbey Tavern on Saturday night last. Fundraising for a club in a small parish like Castlelyons in the present financial environment can be difficult and when Castlelyons GAA club decided to run a fundraising draw no one could have forecasted what a fantastic success it would be. This success was down to a dedicated group of sellers who worked tirelessly and availed of every opportunity both at home and abroad to sell cards and the club thanks everyone who supported our draw either through purchasing, selling or providing sponsorship.

The total prize fund is in excess of €2,500 with the two top cash prizes being €500 each. The success of this ongoing initiative has only been made possible by the generosity of the sponsors who have once again come on board and supported us.
