Narrow defeat for Junior B Hurlers in Championship

Castlelyons 1-16: Youghal 2-14

Castlelyons took on Youghal in the quarter final of the East Cork Junior B Hurling championship on Sunday morning last in Dungourney. This was a tough physical match with both sides holding the lead on different occasions but unfortunately we came out on the wrong side of a one point defeat.

Timmy McCarthy No 14 - a mighty year - Hurling & FootballPlaying with the aid of a strong breeze we started slow and Youghal led after 5 mins on a score of 1-01 to 0-01 with Chris Cotter getting the first point for Castlelyons. Points from Robbie Feeney, Ml Spillane and Timmy McCarthy levelled the match and from here to half time there was never more than one point between the sides.

Ml Spillane was unerring from frees and we also had the bonus of a long range free that went through the Youghal goalkeepers hand for a Castlelyons goal. J Barry had our last point of the half that left us leading at half time by 1-09 to 1-08.

Youghal with the aid of the breeze in the second half came at us from the start and with a goal and a point in the first 10 mins they went into a 2 point lead. However we defended very well with great performances from Declan Sexton, Shane  Fenton and Seanie Cotter in our half back line we held firm and with points from Robbie Feeney, Ml Spillane, Declan Sexton and Jack Barry there was still only 2 points between the sides as we entered added time.

In those frantic last few minutes we tried our best for a goal but Youghal held out and won on a score of 2-14 to 1-16.  Thanks to all involved, management and players, for a great performance and for your commitment throughout the year.
