Castlelyons GAA Notes we 18.11.19 2019-11-19 16:34:00

Historic time for Castlelyons GAA as lands are purchased adjacent to current facilities.

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Caisleán Uí Liathán are presently in the process of closing a deal in the purchase of lands adjoining the present club property. This land is in two lots and amounts to 9.5 acres approx. with Mr Jeremiah Healy of Healy Crowley & Company Solicitors acting on behalf of our Club. The lands are being purchased from two separate Vendors namely the Personal Representative in the Estate of Eileen Doherty, Deceased and Mr Edmund Kent, Castlelyons. We are eternally grateful to these Vendors as they are providing a legacy for future generations at the heart of Castlelyons village. It is a historic time for our Club as we very fortunate to have secured such valuable lands which will provide further sporting amenities in the years ahead for our club, parish and the wider community.

As many members are aware, the purchase of this land is a slow process and we wish to acknowledge the great contributions made by many especially some benefactors. It’s important, we believe, for as many as possible to have an appreciation of what has been achieved, but equally the challenges that lie ahead in raising finance, designing and developing the facility. In doing so we must live up to the hard work and strong culture built up by powerful parishioners who developed the Community Centre, amenities and pitch initially in tough times, and we owe them so much.

Castlelyons defeated by Newcestown in U21 hurling county quarter final.

Newcestown 1-16 Castlelyons 0-16.

We headed for Cloughduv with confidence on Sunday as our lads had shown up well in East Cork with a great win over a fancied Aghada side in the Final. Newcestown too had a great win over Kilbrittan in the West Cork final and several of their lads had senior experience over the last few years. Conditions were good with a slight breeze hitting down from Fernanes towards the village. Pat Lyons the referee had a full set of linesmen and umpires with him but unusually the game commenced nine and a half minutes after the scheduled time. Playing against the breeze Barry Murphy put over a very good point but Newcestown replied with a point from their own midfielder Gearóid O Donovan one of the U20 County football stars and a handy hurler too. The game developed with some skilful hurling and scores as Newcestown edged in front with some good free taking from Edmund Kenneally, but Keith O Leary put over 0-2 for us from frees.

They were 0-6 to 0-3 up after fifteen minutes but we really got into the game as Shane Cotter who was doing very well was fouled off the ball and Keith O Leary put over the free. Peter Roche and James Kearney had 0-1 apiece. We were on top and Newcestown were feeding off scraps. Their centre back Colm Dineen dominated and cleared a power of ball and we were over eager in some of our tackling as we gave away some handy frees to a deadly accurate Edmund Kenneally and went in at half time down 0-8 to 0-10. However, all the lads were going well, and the standard of hurling was high.

We started the second half well again as Barry Murphy was fouled and Keith planted the free. Dave Morrison had a point and looked dangerous but the feed into him was slow. At the other end Newcestown continued to get the scores from Kenneally. Dave Morrison was fouled, and Keith 0-1 pointed again. Newcestown broke through for what seemed a certain goal, but Leon Doocey got in a vital shoulder to prevent the shot. Niall O Leary set up Shane Cotter for a fine point and with fifteen minutes on the clock the game was really in the melting pot as it was 0-12 to 0-14. At this stage our lads were hurling well all over the field and young Leon Doocey having a massive game at half back as had Shane Cotter at midfield and our marksman Keith O Leary who finished the day with 0-11.

There is always some disruption, and this came in the sending off of our leader Niall O Leary for a somewhat innocuous foul, but it was a second yellow. However, it was antagonising to all present that a very serious off the ball foul was missed by the officials and another of our stalwarts Jamie O Leary had to retire with a head injury. This had a very disruptive effect on our side as the loss of Niall and Jamie was incalculable. With just two points in it and two minutes normal time Dave Morrison was fouled and the referee awarded a penalty to Castlelyons. Keith O Leary put this one over to leave 0-1 in it but on the puckout Newcestown worked it upfield for Gearóid O Donovan to goal for Newcestown and although we got a consolation point it ended 1-16 to 0-6.

This was a cracking game of hurling and while we could have taken it must take stock as many of our lads are young while I noted the whole spine of the opposition had a lot of senior hurling played and that bit more experience. When one mixes that with the traditional ingredient endeavour these Newcestown men always have they are a tough outfit. Therefore, our lads deserve great credit for such effort in matching the opposition and taking the game to the wire. I was coming out of the pitch and an old friend from Newcestown remarked of the quality of our hurling and observed we could have taken it with a bit more discipline as their marksman Edmund Kenneally is deadly accurate and he nailed a pile of frees.

Well done lads you took the East Cork and no doubt you will learn as defeat always brings a lesson and a chance to rebuild. Thanks to Colm Barry, Anthony Spillane and Eoin Maye who have worked hard with the team and, one thing for sure, there are a lot of them boys who will do well with Castlelyons in time.
