Minor Hurlers in Rebel Óg East Final.

Castlelyons 3-13 Aghada 0-19

Congratulations and well done to our minor hurlers. Great win in Ballinacurra last night in the semifinal of the Rebel Óg East Division 2 Minor Hurling Championship. They defeated a strong Aghada outfit on a score Castlelyons 3-13 Aghada 0-19.

Having defeated Whitechurch already the lads were in good form but Aghada were fancied for this one. However, it was a very workmanlike performance from Castlelyons with James Kearney, Oscar Hallihan and Richard Morrison supplying the goals and Colm McCarthy was good on the frees as he slotted over 0-5 as they came home three-point winners. This is a very talented young team with only two on the age. Leo Doocey (Cork minor panel this year) James Kearney and Jack Kenny have already worn the red jersey at underage level but in general the team is very even and laden with lads who are prepared to work hard. They now play St Catherines in the final on Wednesday 11^th September with the venue and time to be arranged.

St Catherines trained by Denis Walsh defeated Carrignabhfear in the other semi-final on a score 0-9 to 0-15 and will be fancied. However, our lads are in with a right chance in this derby. Managers Willie Casey, Pat O Neill with coaches Niall O Leary and Alan Fenton are doing a great job and will be working on the team over the next few weeks so they should be well ready. Castlelyons Community Centre to undergo extensive renovation.

Castlelyons GAA facilitated the Community Centre Committee with a lease of the hall and area for a lengthy period toward the end of 2018. This initiative is working out very well as a programme of renovation and modernisation is about to commence in the coming weeks. Foremost among these works will be insulation of the walls and ceilings, a new electrical system, alterations to ladies and gents’ rooms, new kitchen, new suite of furniture including tables and chairs and the place will be user friendly in meeting the needs of the disabled. A hard-working committee led by Matt Hegarty have raised substantial finances, sought and acquired grants and received a donation from an exceptional benefactor. These works are most timely as the Centre is need of upgrade and well done to the Committee who have taken on this work. Also let us not forget to thank the various committee members down the years ensured various repairs and work to the place. They have kept our Community Centre at the hub of community life for all parishioners and so many activities.

Castlelyons face Inniscarra in the premier intermediate hurling quarter final. 

We now know our opponents with Inniscarra’s resounding win over Mallow on Saturday evening on a score 1-16 to 0-15. Inniscarra will be tough as they defeated us in the PIHC 2016 by nine points 4-11 to 1-11. Then in the U21 semi-final of 2017 held in Mallow Inniscarra defeated us again 2-10 to 3-13 so they will be clear favourites to take us for the upcoming game. However, if the lads keep focused for the next few weeks and work on their game, we are in with a sporting chance. This quarter final is down for 14/15^th September with the day, time and venue to be fixed and we will have more later.

Castlelyons 2-20 Ballysaggart 2-17

Well it was off to Páirc Mochuda in Ballysaggart on Saturday evening to play the locals in a challenge as we continue preparations for the quarter final of the premier intermediate hurling championship. Páirc Mochuda is in high land and with the McGillycuddy Reeks (Mac Giolla Mochuda) and Kilmacud (Cill Mochuda) in Dublin I wondered, like stories of St Patrick, how many St Mochudas were there. However, there was one St Mochuda of Lismore and he was in fact a Kerry man. Anyway, Páirc Mochuda in Ballysaggart is a credit to the club as it is one of massive size and in perfect condition.

We elected to play against the breeze in the first half and found the going tough as county man Stephen Bennett was on the ball a lot and they ran up a big score and Ml Spillane kept us in it with his accuracy from frees. Then towards the end of the first half Alan Fenton tacked on 0-3 from play and Anthony Spillane had a goal to leave it 1-14 to 1-12 at half time.

There was some great hurling in the second half as our lads assisted by a strong breeze and hurling into the Knockmealdowns We got some quality scores. Despite the best efforts of the Bennett brothers especially Stephen who galloped all over the place we drove on for a good win. We did hit a few wides, but this can be improved in time. Good to see Tom Carroll back in action again after a nasty injury requiring surgery and fair play to him, all the hard work hard he has done on rehab. All in all, a good run out for the lads.

Hurling & Camogie Skills Camp a huge success.

Thanks to all who helped with our Hurling & Camogie Skills Camp. There was excellent work by our coaches, assistants as they built in great structure, skills and outstanding communication into their sessions with the children. Thanks to Kite Sports who sponsored sliotars, Elverys Intersports who sponsored the Grips and Liam Barry of Fermoy Print who sponsored fabulous certificates. Thanks to you the parents / guardians for your patience in dropping off and collecting the children each day. Finally, a huge bualadh bos for all the children who took part, were so attentive and behaved impeccably over the three days. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir. We are already looking forward to 2020 with a few upgrades.

Congratulations to Lucy McNulty and the Cork U16 Camogie team.

Congratulation to Lucy McNulty and her Cork U16 teammates who had a mighty 2-10 to 2-5 win over Wexford in Walsh Park Waterford recently. This was the semi-final and they now play Galway in the All-Ireland Final on Sunday 25^th August in a venue to be decided. Best of luck Lucy.

Our weekly club lotto draw was held in the Peddlers on Monday 19^th August and the numbers drawn were 18, 25, 26 and 28. There was no winner. Under 20 All Ireland Hurling Final.

Cork are our in the replay against Tipperary in the Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland Final on Saturday, August 24th, in The LIT Gaelic Grounds at 6pm. Tipp will be gung-ho for this final especially after bagging the Cats in the senior final last Sunday and they have a few of this panel on the U20 side. However, Cork were almost over the line in the first game in Thurles only for a last-minute goal from Tipperary by Jake Morris. So now in the neutral grounds of LIT Gaelic Grounds, Limerick Cork must be in with a right chance of going all the way this time. Best of luck to our own Barry Murphy who is on the panel, the Roche twins, Bride Rovers and the whole panel. Up the Rebels make it a double with the minor football to come.
