Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 10.9.18 2018-09-14 01:15:00

It’s Premier evening Friday Evening.

We are out in the premier intermediate hurling championship on Friday evening 14.9.18 in Páirc Uí Rinn at 7.45 versus Courcey Rovers our last championship game being almost five months ago. Well folks there is talk about the plight of clubs and how the top adult team in each club can be accommodated within the system. We have the Clubs Association recently talking about it but even they are gone a bit quiet. It seems an age ago since our premier intermediate side played Youghal down in Killeagh in the first round of the championship and had a well merited win 0-19 to 1-15 on the 28.4.18. However, is was a week earlier on the 22.8.18 when Courcey Rovers recorded a cracking victory over Inniscarra 3-18 to 0-19, and, in fact, they were leading 3-16 to 0-6 at half time.

We have had many great battles with Courceys over the years even when we won an East Cork Junior 25 years ago Courceys took us in the first round of the county after a replay. Friday evening’s game is also quarter final in the league as they have the same number of points as us. They are a very strong side and all their forwards have scoring potential. They showed this against Inniscarra with Sean Twomey banging in three goals and Tadgh O Sullivan deadly accurate from frees and play. They are handy at the back too with Dan Lordon a top player and Killian Duggan a massive centre back. Killian Farmer has played a fair bit and knows midfield as they are very strong there.

So, what are our chances on Friday evening in Páirc Uí Rinn. We have a bit of injury with Ronan Fenton gone for the year with the dreaded cruciate and we wish him well, but Anthony Spillane is improving after a lengthy absence and should make some appearance. We have a generally even team boosted by Colm Spillane and Niall O Leary. However, when we played them in Ballinspittle last March we were extremely lucky to come away with a win, 0-15 to 0-13 and we had all our team that day. Courceys have shown great form recently in various league and other games which would give them that favourite tag and we must be in top form to get a result. However, our lads have trained well and made a great effort and we wish them the best. Be sure to come along and cheer on the team.

Congratulations to Cork Camogie Teams – All Ireland Champions 2018

Congrats to Cork who took the Senior and Intermediate All-Ireland Camogie title on Sunday. A special congrats to Orla Cotter from neighbouring club St Catherines who won her seventh medal with a magnificent display earning her Player of the Match on RTE and the Irish Independent. Also, to Finola Neville, Laura Hayes and Rachel O Callaghan also of St Catherines who were on the Intermediate side as well as our neighbour Jennifer Barry of Bride Rovers who had a star game and Mossy O Sullivan of the Rovers who was a selector on that team. Great for the girls and great for Camogie in Cork as they are an example to all.

Bride Rovers defeat our U21 Hurlers.

Bride Rovers had a convincing 3-16 to 1-17 win over out U21 hurlers in the East cork Under 21 A semi-final in Dungourney refereed by Arthur Murphy. I sought a report but did not receive it to date so maybe I will have same for next week. However, Rovers now play Carrigtwohill, who defeated St Catherines recently, in the Final. This should be a good game between two evenly matched teams.
