Castlelyons bow out of Junior B Hurling Championship.

Castlelyons 0-20 St Catherines 0-22

Our Junior B hurlers took on Sarsfields on Thursday evening in Glenville in the championship. Sarsfields started well and were 0-4 up when Peter Roche rose a white flag for us. Then Ian O Riordan and Keith O Leary added points and we were hurling well. Sarsfields through long puck outs and some good half forwards got on top again and were 0-10 to 0-6 for us in the 15th minute. However, credit our lads as the backs done well and Keith O Leary had a fine game both from frees and play got some great points well supported by Ian O Riordan and Brian O Donovan to leave the minimum in it at half time Sarsfields 0-12 Castlelyons 0-11.

There was a lot of good hurling early in the second half as Keith O Leary 0-2, Ian O Riordan 0-1 and Peter Roche 0-1 had it at 0-16 apiece with fifteen minutes left. Eoin and Andrew O Neill came on for Padraig Murphy and Chris Cotter at this stage. Sarsfields began to forge ahead again as they were going well in a few areas. However, our lads as they stuck to the task. Shane O Sullivan and Keith O Leary waded in with some good scores keeping us in touch. Then Brian O Donovan put over a beauty of a sixty-five almost on time and it was all square on 0-20 apiece but Sarsfields had the strength to score two more points and take the spoils.

Our full back Liam Moroney, out injured, was a big loss to us but fair play to all the defence they done very well and especially to Conor McCarthy who received a nasty injury last week and came back to do very well against Sars. Brian O Donovan and Peter Roche done very well at midfield as did our forwards scoring 0-20 in a high scoring game. We have now last two games as Dungourney beat us by the minimum one point and this week Sars by one point do we are out of this year’s championship. Thanks to Colm Barry, Larry Murphy and the lads for looking after the team.

Cork Under 21 Hurlers show no mercy as they trash Wexford to reach final.

Congratulations to the U21 Rebel hurlers as they swept to a 3-26 to 0-13 win over Wexford in Nowlan Park on Saturday to reach the Final for the first time in two decades. Well mar deirtear “mol an oige agus tiocfaidh said” and this looks the case as Denis Ring and his management outfit have done excellent work with these lads over the last few years. They now play the winners of Galway or Tipperary in the final at the end of August and with a bit of luck, they can go on to win it out . Well done to our own Castlelyons man Niall O Leary who excelled at full back and to the Roche brothers from neighbours Bride Rovers, who are members of the panel also. We wish Declan Dalton, Fr O Neills, who is such a vital part of the team on the 40, a speedy recovery from a nasty knee injury and hopefully he will be fit for the final.

Castlelyons Juveniles doing well in County selections.

I see that Cork U16 hurlers won an intercounty tournament up in Kildangan, Co. Tipperary at the week end. They had great victories over Galway, Kilkenny and Tipperary and the captain was Castlelyons man Leon Doocey. Congrats and well done to Leo on a great achievement.

Then in the U15B hurling tournament Cork are going very well with recent wins Kilkenny and Kerry and are in the final down for the week end of the 26th August. Colm McCarthy, Castlelyons is the goalie in this team and doing very well. Congrats Colm.
