Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 23.10.17 2017-10-25 20:09:00

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 23rd October, 2017, by Kieran McGann

County U21 Hurling Semi Final on Saturday.

County Under 21 A Hurling Semi Final on Saturday 28.10.17 at 3 pm.

Castlelyons play Inniscarra in the County Under 21 A Hurling Semi Final at Mallow on this Saturday at 3pm. Inniscarra defeated Eire Óg in the Muskerry Divisional Final and got a bye to the Semi Final. Castlelyons, who were so impressive against Bride Rovers in the East Cork Final, were pressed hard by a strong Clonakilty side recently in the quarter final but powered their way to victory with a strong team display. Inniscarra derive their credentials from an excellent minor side that won the East A Grade a few years ago. They have a lot of good hurlers especially county under 21 stars Sean O Donoghue, Thomás O Connor and county U17 stars Liam Ryan, midfield with Eoghan McCarthy, corner forward. This quartet will demand attention as they have proven ability. We have a lot of lads capable of mixing it with the best and producing the goods as many of them have intermediate experience and, indeed, in the championship to date. They are making a serious effort in commitment and training and we wish them the best of luck and to our management outfit who are equally committed. Let’s get behind this team in their quest for a county title. Castlelyons Abú

Intermediate Hurling League Final in Lisgoold now gone to Saturday 11.10.17.

Well having regained our rightful grade of Premier Intermediate hurling for 2018 we will be judged on our hurling progress as we take on Watergrasshill in the Division 2 IHL final possibly in Lisgoold and now out to Saturday 11.10.17. This is the real business end of the season as there are a lot of games down for decision with Castlelyons involved in both hurling and football. The ‘Hill are at the top heir game with their recent win over Inniscarra and will provide extremely tough opposition. We all know what a derby is like and while it should be a mighty game we must harbour the strongest ambitions of coming out the right side so hopefully players and management are preparing dutifully for this game. We are also down to play Fr O Neill’s in the East Cork Intermediate championship final; the Abernethy Cup and this game is due to be played shortly. Best of luck to the players and our management team of Mick Spillane, John McCarthy and Colm Crowley on Sunday as it would be great to end the season with a bit of silverware.

Imokilly crowned champions on a historic day.

Imokilly 3-13 Blackrock 0-18

Imokilly are county senior hurling champions for 2017 on reopening of the Páirc. Goals win games and last Sunday we kept a clean sheet and scored three which proved the difference in a dour struggle that did not come to life until the last 15 minutes. The Sean Óg Murphy Cup was presented to county man Sheamie Harnedy from St Ita’s who with Ciarán O Brien are from a small but proud junior club in the Division.

The whole journey has meant so much to the smaller clubs in East Cork particularly our own as we had star men Colm Barry at full back and Niall O Leary at centre back with Tom Carroll and Aidan O Sullivan panel members. Well done lads and as ye proved yourselves on holding the best the Rockies could offer on Sunday. Colm deserves, at least, an opportunity to prove himself further in the county set up in 2018. Niall at the tender age of 19 years and playing in that pivotal position of centre back all year has moved on another step in a rising career that should follow in a red jersey too. Of course, these lads are following in the footsteps of legends like Mick Spillane (football), William O Riordan, former captain, Timmy McCarthy, Barry and Eoin Fitzgerald, Peter Murphy and Aidan Barry all members of our club who won medals with Imokilly.

Overall, we had a strong spread of scorers as well as the ability to find the net. Cian Fleming’s strike in the 20th minute put us in a good spot for half time as we led 1-7 to 0-8 and our Sheamie Harnedy netted immediately after the restart.

Blackrock battled on and frees from Michael O’Halloran helped them as we were a little careless at times. However, despite massive effort they never drew level. Then when Brian Mulcahy, St Catherines, banged in a first time shot for a cracking goal well into injury time it was game over and massive scenes of celebration.

Imokilly: Declan Dalton (Fr O’Neill’s); Barra Ó Tuama (Castlemartyr), Colm Barry (Castlelyons), Kieran Histon (Cobh); Ciarán O’Brien (St Ita’s), Niall O’Leary (Castlelyons), John Cronin (Lisgoold, 0-1); Mark O’Keeffe (Fr O’Neill’s, 0-2), Ger Mellerick (Fr O’Neill’s, 0-1); Brian Lawton (Castlemartyr, 0-2, 0-1 sideline), Sheamie Harnedy (St Ita’s, 1-1), William Leahy (Aghada, 0-4 frees); Paudie O’Sullivan (Cloyne, 0-2), Ian Cahill (Cloyne), Cian Fleming (Aghada, 1-0). Subs: Daniel Mangan (St Catherine’s) for Cahill (51), Brian Mulcahy (St Catherine’s, 1-0) for Fleming (58).

Official Opening of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Well the new Páirc hosted the replay of the football final also on Sunday and Nemo Rangers were convincing winners of the Andy Scannell Cup. Then it was the official opening preceded by some resounding traditional music by that great box player Liam O Connor who won a county medal with Duhallow. Congratulations to Chairman Ger Lane from neighbours Bride Rovers who worked so hard and spoke well. He was part of the Steering Committee over the last three years to see this initiative come to fruition. In fact, it has now been announced that Páirc Uí Chaoimh has been shortlisted in the Overall Project of the Year category in the 2017 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards and club members have been circulated on the details. President Aogán O Fearghail performed the official opening and Bishop Buckley performed the official blessing on a historic occasion. We know the extent of the storms and heavy rain throughout last week and still the pitch was in outstanding condition which augurs well for future summer days of championship stuff. Well done to all.
