Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 13.2.17 2017-02-14 13:31:00

Footballers commence League campaign with a draw.

Castlelyons 1-14 St Catherines 3-8

We played St Catherines in Ballynoe last Friday evening and came away with a point in the first round of the League. The weather was bitterly cold but the pitch was in great condition and referee Jim Daly let the game flow. We were treated to some great spells of football considering it was the first game of the year for both teams. Our lads defended well but found Eoin Condon at full forward and Dan Mangan at centre forward hard to handle as they moved fast on goal at times with Mangan also accurate from frees.

We had a lot of possession and Alan Fenton was in good form both from play and frees as he put over six points in the first half. Tom Carroll, Eoin Maye and Michael Spillane also had points for us in the first half. However, we were guilty of some poor shooting as many shots headed for Morley’s Cross. The half time score 1-7 to 0-9 in favour of St Catherines.

The second half took up again with some good stuff as Ronan Fenton levelled it for us with a good point from play. But then we conceded a penalty and Dan Mangan planted it for them. We were lucky at times but Michael Spillane who was now sweeper did some great work and pushed on for a win with points Alan Fenton again to the fore and scoring freely and Eoin Maye. However, we conceded an unfortunate goal again as a 30-yard free from Daniel Mangan deceived our lads and the same player scored another point from play to put them two up but Alan Fenton 0-1 and Ronan O Regan doing well and wide and A Fenton 0-1 again helped us to a well-earned draw.

Well done to all the lads who made themselves available on the night and their mentors Donal O Leary and James Moroney as we have so many engaged in Harty, Fitzgibbon and other stuff now but we must all out for a win at home to Carrigtwohill next Sunday at 3 pm to stay in the League shake up.

Team: - Keith O Leary, Brian Carroll, Colm O Neill, Noel McAuliffe, Eoin Maye, Colm Barry, Shane Fenton, Ronan Bransfield, Alan Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan, Tom Carroll, Ronan O Regan, Alan O Regan, Ronan Fenton, Mike Spillane. Subs: - Ciaran McGann (HT), Darren Tobin (HT, Michael Geary and Mark Murphy (second half).

Good day at the Point to Points in Knockanard.

We had a good day at the Point to Point in Knockanard last Sunday but the crowd was down on other years. A special thanks to the club members who worked so hard preparing on Saturday and Sunday morning, serving and working at the Refreshment Tent and on the paper-pick afterwards. Congrats to Ms Catherine Cashman one of our stalwarts for many years who with Mick Leahy had a winner on Sunday as Dubai Way came in seven lengths clear of the field.

Fitzgibbon Cup News.

Well the UCC story continues again this week as they won away to Maynooth University, 0-22 to 0-14 last week and take on DCU Dóchas Éireann at home in the quarter final this Tuesday. Jack Barry, will be in goals with Colm Spillane at full back and Anto Spillane is on in the corner forward position. Best of luck to UCC and the lads.

It was tougher luck on Alan Fenton’s CIT team who bowed out of the Fitzgibbon despite an outstanding game and draw, 0-19 apiece, with NUI Galway. The Galway lads qualified for the quarter finals on greater points.

Best of luck to Saint Colman’s in Harty Cup Final on Saturday.

All roads lead to the hollowed Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on Saturday as St Colman’s take on Our Lady’s, Templemore in the Dr Harty Cup Final. Colman’s won it in 2003 and Our Lady’s back in 1979 but it’s great to see the tradition continuing and it does not get better with the tribal passion of Cork and Tipp hurling on show. Our Lady’s may be favourites but St Colman’s with so many hard workers matched with a high skill level could do the business. Well done to all clubs who are working hard at juvenile level and increasing the supply line lately as the College has already bagged the Dean Ryan this year.

The club wishes all the lads, their mentors who have worked hard with the team and especially our own Jamie O Leary, Niall O Leary and Barry Murphy with panellists John Paul Murphy, Seamus Moroney, Mark Spillane, James Kearney, and David Morrison the very best for Saturday.

Cork take down the Banner at home.

Well Saturday evening in a perfect Páirc Uí Rinn started with a fail effort of our National Anthem but did not stop the Cork hurlers from taking down the Banner for a very good league win. Full marks to Kieran Kingston and his selectors as they put out several debutants and all played very well. Colm Spillane had a fine game at full back including a moment of genius as he stole a ball off a Clareman on the wing and rifled a direct angle to the throat of Horgan who put it over for the score of the game. Early days for all but a lot of promise.

County Scór Quiz.

The County Final of the Scór Table Quiz is on this Friday night the 17th of February at 7.30pm in the Éire Óg GAA pavilion. It is also a fundraiser for Marymount. Castlelyons usually have a team in this so those interested should give their name to the Secretary Michael Barrett or our new joint Cultural Officers Eilis Uí Bhriain and Stacey Cronin.

Proposed changes to the Cork County Junior ‘A’ Hurling and Football Championships.

The much-debated changes to the Junior championship format have been refined and wild card entries are shelved. Overall, this is now an exciting change to the competition and offers the opportunity of teams that have made huge efforts in training during the year another opportunity and well done to the Board who are working hard in this area. The matter is up for final decision at the next County Board meeting.
