Castlelyons GAA Club Notes W.E. 21.11.2016 2016-11-23 13:16:00

New Chairman for Castlelyons GAA.

Good turnout for Castlelyons GAA Annual General Meeting.

We had our annual General Meeting on Friday night last in the Community Centre. There was a huge crowd present and a great turn out of players. There were many tributes paid to our outgoing Chairman, John Healy, who did not seek re-election. John had worked very hard in the position and was taking a well-earned rest. Maurice Carroll our Vice Chairman was elected Chairman and Con Lawlor, who has come back on the Committee took up the position of Vice Chairman.

The Secretary, Michael Barrett, gave an outstanding detailed report of all Club Activities for the year. This included the following: -

  • He gave a brief outline of the activities of the Intermediate Hurlers, the Footballers, and the Minors for the year and thanked the players and management teams.
  • He thanked his fellow Officers for their work during the year and all the other officers with various responsibilities.
  • He complimented the Juvenile and Camogie Clubs who continue to promote our games and introduce the children of the Parish to the game. He noted that they work very hard.
  • He outlined that there were a strong number of players involved with County teams, Development Squads and Imokilly teams during the year and it was a great honour for the Club, his parents and the player to have Niall O Leary as Captain of the Cork Minor Hurling team this year. This augurs well for the future.
  • He paid a special thanks to the CES workers under the leadership of Assumpta Mangan who kept the whole place so well for the year and to Bridie Milward who took bookings and prepared the rooms for meetings in a most efficient manner.
  • He outlined the value of the Club Lotto, the great work of the sellers and the commitment of the Lotto team under the stewardship of Michal Hegarty and to all who offer their assistance in any way.
  • He had a special word of thanks for our new Sponsor ZEUS and all others who sponsored and made contributions to the club during the year.
  • Michael offered condolences to all who lost loved ones during the year. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go léir.

Treasurer’s Report

Donal O Leary, our treasurer, gave his report and his financial statement and balance sheet together with bank balances and other details with a facility of detail and accuracy to such an extent what when he completed his deliberations there were no questions for the second year in a row. Donal has given leadership in the finance and tetchy areas while introducing good initiatives that have yielded the few bob to keep the Club ticking and we thank him for this work. Mr O Leary then thanked John Healy for his great work as chairman over the last number of years and how he worked so well with him and he wished John the best but knew he would continue working for the Club.

Managers Reports

Mick Spillane, Manager of the Intermediate team, James May of the Junior B Hurlers, Mark Murphy on behalf of the U21 Hurlers and Footballers, and Donal O Leary Manager of the Footballers all gave reports. In general, it was a mediocre season for us with no great progress in Intermediate hurling, tough going fielding a second team and early knockouts in Under 21 Hurling and football.

However, there was a big improvement in Junior A Football this year as we competed in the A Grade championship only and reached the East Cork Final after good wins Glenville, Glenbower Rovers and Ballinacurra. We played very well against Cloyne and were unlucky to lose on the evening. Donal O Leary outlined the enthusiasm for football this year as they trained in an organised manner whilst not interfering with the hurling and played some challenge games also. He outlined that for the coming year we would suggest we play in the League also and thanked his fellow selectors James Moroney and Maurice Carroll. Taking up management of any team can be an arduous task and we are very thankful to all Managers and selectors.

Shane Hickey gave a report on the minor hurling and this was an outstanding story as we moved from last year’s twelve a side C Grade up a few notches this year to the 15 a side A Grade and were victorious in the Rebel Óg East Final. We then went on to qualify for the County Final and were so unlucky to be defeated by Ballygiblin in a replay. Overall, the games against Ballygiblin were two cracking games and they gave us so much enjoyment over the season. Shane outlined that we played in the East League Final a short time afterwards but due to injuries and resting players we were defeated by Ballygarvan but overall it was a great year. There was a mighty bualadh bos for the minor lads and Mentors Shane Hickey, Jimmy O Leary, Brian Carroll, Anthony Spillane and the players and it augurs so well for the future.

Kieran McGann, Cultural Officer gave an account of Scór and outlined that we had a strong participation in Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir and it was great to see both National Schools back in Scór na bPaistí. Thanks to Mr Nelius De Roiste, Castlelyons N.S. and Ms Stephanie Howard, Kilmagnier N.S. for preparing teams. He then outlined that the Comóradh 1916 -2016 held on Sunday 8th May was generally very successful. The Souvenir Programme produced for the day would be lodged in the Museum in Croke Park as they have requested programmes of such events from Clubs about the counties.

John Healy, our Chairman gave the Officer report and reiterated many of our Secretary Michael Barrett’s comments outlining that he was very proud to be chairman of a strong club like Castlelyons and he had a strong belief that we could bring the ultimate success of a County Championship shortly.

Denis Buckley took the Chair for the Election of Officers and the following were elected: -

  • Life President: - Tom Joe Riordan
  • President: - Dave Hegarty
  • Vice Presidents: - Father Gerry Coleman, Seamus Sexton, Martin Dorgan and Donal O Connell, Ned Fitzgerald.
  • Chairperson: - Maurice Carroll
  • Vice Chairperson: - Con Lawlor.
  • Secretary: -  Michael Barrett
  • Assistant Secretary & Registrar: - Colm Barry
  • Treasurer: - Donal O Leary. Assistant Treasurer: - Ronan Fenton
  • PRO: - Kieran McGann
  • Insurance Claims Officer: - James Maye
  • Children’s Officer: - To be appointed by Juvenile Club
  • County Board Delegates: - John Barrett and Kieran McGann
  • East Cork Board Delegates: - Seamus Sexton and Mark Murphy
  • Cultural Officer: - Vacant
  • Safety Officer: - Kieran McGann
  • Health and Wellbeing Officer: - Tom Carroll

There were wo motions. However, there was lively discussion on a Gymnasium for the players. This is ongoing for the last twelve months but the players have now raised substantial finances for this initiative. There was a subcommittee formed of Ml Spillane, Colm Barry, Brian Carroll, Con Lawlor and Kieran McGann to progress this for the coming season.

Congratulations to St Colman’s College.

Congrats and well done to St Colman’s College who defeated Thurles CBS in the replayed Dean Ryan Cup Final by two points in Limerick last Saturday. While they now have twelve such titles and are joint top with Thurles CBS and St Flannan’s this is a valued one as it is the first in twelve years. It puts St Colman’s and Cork Colleges back on the map and in a game of great scores and an outstanding goal by the boys in green there could be red flags flying again in a few years. Well done too to all the local clubs who are obviously working hard. Special congratulations to our own three Castlelyons lads, James Kearney, Jack Kenny and David Morrison, who all started and done well and to our own Juvenile Club.
