An important week for Cork Hurling

Under 21 Hurling Challenge versus Kilworth.

We played Kilworth at home on Sunday morning in a highly entertaining U21 hurling challenge.  Declan Varner and Colm O Neill played well as Colm dropped back a lot and defended well from midfield. Ronan Bransfield, Keith O Leary did well and got a few scores for us in the first half.  Our wing forwards young Mark Spillane and, especially, Ml Geary who scored 0-2. The shooting overall was a bit wild as both teams had eight wides apiece.  We led by one point at half time on the score Castlelyons 0-9 Kilworth 0-8.

The second half started with good hurling but again the finishing was weak.  We traded points and then David Beausang got in for a goal.  However, Jamie Sheehan, Kilworth, replied shortly after with the score of the day as he tore in for a great goal.  Jamie O Leary had to come off injured and this put us under pressure.  Some of the Kilworth lads began to open up the shoulders and throw over good scores.  However, our men stuck to the tack and Colm O Neill worked hard at midfield and when David Beausang was brought down in the square Ronan Bransfield clung the penalty and we held on for a draw at 2-17 apiece.

This was an excellent workout as Kilworth had good hurlers in Dave Twomey at centre back, Jamie Sheehan at centre forward, Brian Sheehan on the wing and Mike Wade at full forward.  There were others also.  Our lads made an excellent effort all through and hopefully we will have enough in the tank for Youghal in the championship shortly.

Team: - Shane Moroney, Jack Buckley, Jamie O Leary, Redmond Walsh, Shane Fenton, Declan Varner, James Moroney, Brian O Donovan, Colm O Neill, Mark Spillane, Ronan Bransfield, Michael Geary, Keith O Leary, David Beausang, Andrew O Neill.

Presentation to of €10,000 to Ms Maura O Sullivan.

Ms Maura O Sullivan, Mohera, Castlelyons was presented with a cheque for €10,000 on Monday night last at a function in the Abbey Bar last Monday night by our Club Chairman John Healy.  This was the Castlelyons GAA Jackpot which had lasted 50 weeks. Congrats to Maura on her win as she is a great supporter down the years and, indeed, she is one of the main organisers in the Castlelyons Pipe Band draw on Wednesday nights. Thanks also to Maura for the libations and the refreshments on the night.

A most important week for Cork Hurling.

When you read this piece Cork will be either victors or the vanquished in their U21 Munster hurling championship game versus Limerick in Páirc Ui Rinn.  Great to see that minor hurling prodigy Pa O Callaghan back in Cork colours again.  He has been doing so well with Ballyhea over the last few years but decided to remain off county teams due to other commitments.   Now we have our own man Anthony Spillane lining out in the forwards for the third year in a row.  Anthony has so unfortunate injuries along the way but is mighty for Tuesday night and we wish him and Cork the very best.

Then on this Thursday evening again in the home turf, Páirc Ui Rinn, we face up to Tipperary in the Munster minor hurling semi-final.  These lads have gone at the training in a most professional manner with Dinny Ring as manager with over six months.  The team is captained by our own Niall O Leary a might honour for our club and his family.  Niall missed our great entire PIHC to date with injury but played the other night and was in good form with the Cork minors so, hopefully, all will go well for him and Cork.  Now folks let’s have a bit of support for our Clubmen at the games rather than watching in on the goggle-box – see how Iceland roar on their country with the Viking chant (nearly as good as the Clare shout) as they saw off England out of Europe twice in the one week.

Congrats to Castlelyons lads selected Academy Panels on Rebel Óg.

Well done to Barry Murphy who was recently selected on the Rebel Óg Academy Panels for both the U17 football and hurling to and James Kearney and Jack Kenny were selected on the U15 Hurling Panel. This is a mighty achievement for the lads themselves and the Juvenile Club, their schools and, of course great for their parents and family.  These lads have come through a series of inter-regional tournaments and trials over the las nine months and will remain with the squads until the conclusion of the summer programme.

East Cork U21 A Hurling Championship on Sunday 3rd July.

We play Youghal in the East Cork U21 Hurling “A” Championship in Youghal on Sunday evening next in Ballynoe at 6.30 pm.  This is no longer the top grade as there is now County Premier for the first time this year so it is like the old B Grade but nevertheless Youghal will be formidable opponents.  They have county U21 panellist Ollie Dempsey, brothers Cody and Leon Ryan and Andrew Joyce all members of their senior team.  However, we have a very even team with Shane Moroney, Declan Varner, Colm O Neill, Ronan Bransfield and the O Leary brothers leading the way.  Best of luck to Mark O Flynn and his management outfit.
