Castlelyons GAA Notes WE Monday 19.11.18. 2018-11-20 13:15:00

Castlelyons lads doing well with St Colman’s in Harty Cup Win.

Well done to St Colman’s College on a second Harty cup win as they had a tough battle with Gaelcholáiste Mhuire An Mhainistir Thuaidh in Rathcormac last week. The final score 1-12 to 0-9 and our own David Morrison scored the vital goal while James Kearney also started, and Leon Doocey came on in the second half. We also had had Peter Roche, Jack Kenny, Shane Flynn and Eoin O Neill on the panel also.

What a change from the “Boarder” days of St Colman’s when there were lads on the team from throughout the county including other Munster counties. Now its lads from all local clubs including five on the starting fifteen the last day from Fermoy. They now have two wins from two games and are out again on Wednesday 21st November versus Árdscoil Rís, Limerick. Overall, they should do very well this year as they have a lot of strong hurlers including the Roche twins, Bride Rovers Rovers, the Lardner twins, Fermoy and Eoin Carey, Kilworth and we wish them the best.

Colm Spillane with Cork Hurlers in Boston.

Our man Colm Spillane is hitting the international scene these days as he is currently touring Boston with the Cork hurlers. Cork took part in the Fenway Classic in Boston and after beating Clare before 12,600 they were defeated by Limerick in the final. Well-deserved by Colm and all the players after a hectic summer of Sundays and looking forward to the same again for 2019.

Niall O Leary honoured with a UCC Sports Scholarship.

Niall O Leary is one of sixty-five Students recently honoured with a Sports Scholarship in University College Cork. The scholarship provides financial funding, academic support and access to a qualified exercise psychologist. Niall is currently an Under 21 hurling All Star as he had a great year with Cork U21 hurlers and has done very well for our own intermediate hurlers. However, he has been a revelation over the last two years with county champions Imokilly. Niall made the No 6 jersey his own early in 2017 and had outstanding games all through especially in the final versus Blackrock. However, this year he has improved again, as he commanded the pocket and together with Colm Barry and Colm Spillane their play was superlative in snuffing out the Midleton forwards in the county final as Imokilly made it two in a row. Congratulations Niall and best wishes in your sport and studies.

Castlelyons GAA AGM down for Friday 30th November 2018 at 8pm.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday 30th November 2018 at 8pm in the Club Bar to review the past year and make plans for 2019. Our Chairman Con Lawlor has made a big rallying call for new members at executive level as there are positions to be filled in administration, finance, public relations, team managements. Let’s hope that there will be good attendance and discussion on at our AGM.

Any motions for inclusion in the meeting and nominations for any position with the club need to be submitted in writing by Friday 16th November 2018 to Michael Barrett, Knock, Fermoy, Co. Cork or secretary.castlelyons.cork@gaa.ie

Congratulations to Charleville.

Congratulations to Charleville who defeated Feakle of Clare to win the Munster Intermediate hurling championship last Sunday. Charleville have been rising these last few years and they had some hectic battles in Cork especially with Fermoy and Courcey Rovers. Castlelyons drew with Charleville 0-14 apiece in the league last February and we also drew with Courcey Rovers in the championship which shows how competitive the Cork PIHC was this year. Overall, there is a lesson here too for Castlelyons in that we were not far off this year and fair play to the players and management but to get in that winning zone for 2019 it will take a massive effort or maybe a smarter one and its fast approaching.

It was also decided to renew the Text Alert Scheme. As well as ensuring awareness among users of the service, it can also lead to them reporting suspicious activity to Gardai.
