Castlelyons GAA Notes weeks ended 9th + 16th April, 2018 2018-04-22 16:30:00

Castlelyons knocked of top of the Premier IHL.

Castlelyons 0-17 Fr O Neill’s 2-13.

This game with Fr O Neill’s was played in Killeagh on Sunday as this venue also hosts our championship game versus Youghal on Saturday the 28th April. Sunday was wet but cleared somewhat as referee Brian Murphy threw in the sliotar at 12 md. We had the aid of the breeze and the slight fall to the country goals in the first half. The pitch was in reasonable condition and the hurling was tough and rugged. Scores were hard to come by but both Eoin Conway and Colm Spillane exchanged points from play and then Darragh Lawlor and Ronan O Regan had points for us. Jack Barry brought off a good save for us and Shane Moroney began to win a lot of ball for us at full forward and scored 0-1 to leave us 0-5 to 0 -1 on Fifteen minutes. Colm Spillane had a point as both himself and Eoin Maye held sway in the middle. However, O Neills reset and their coach, a good Waterford man who knows a little bit about the sweeper stuff moved in Sean O Connor who hurled a pile of ball all through and Declan Dalton clicked into gear for them on the frees as we conceded some simple fouls. Dalton really caught us on the hop as he planted a goal from a free right through the middle and from a distance. However, Alan Fenton put over a few frees, Colm and Mike Spillane also Ronan Fenton had points from play to leave it 0-11 to 1-5 to us at half time.

It was always going to be a tougher game for us in the second half against the breeze and into the village goals. Shane Moroney won a great ball and set up Colm Spillane for 0-1. Eoin Maye had 0-1 from play and then Fr O Neills had a period of dominance with Sean O Connor, Declan Dalton, Donal Mellerick and Billy Murphy motoring hard. We conceded too many frees and Dalton putting over 0-4 on the trot and missing two handy ones. However, a mix up in a puck out left Fr O Neills in for a killer goal. We brought on a few subs as Ciaran McGann, Barry Murphy, David Morrison and Declan Varner were given game time, but the clock was running down. Colm Spillane 0-2 and Mike Spillane 0-1 from a free kept us in the game but on the day Fr O Neills deserved their two points victory.

Our display was somewhat like the Courceys game which we won but again we sat back too much in defence in the second half and allowed their half back line and midfield put pressure on us. We need to stop the opposition build up earlier rather than let them at us. The championship game versus Youghal is down for Saturday 28.4.18 in Killeagh and we have a chance to do a bit of work yet. Youghal are an experienced outfit just down from senior and will start clear favourites as they have Lee Desmond back and we are down a few great men. Modern hurling is laden with autopilot habits and tactics but when the game is in the melting pot one thing for sure it’s spirit first and technique second. So, no doubt the management outfit will be working on this too over the next few weeks as we must go for it. Best of luck in preparations lads.

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 9th April 2018.

Castlelyons go top of the League but it’s a rocky road.

Castlelyons 0-15. Courcey Rovers 0-13.

This game was switched from Castlelyons to Courcey Rover’s ground at short notice due to a bad night’s rain on Saturday night. So, we made our way in driving rain for a 12-midday game in Ballinspittle and even if the statue was moving on the hill it would be hard to see it. The pitch was in good condition and Brian Keniry was on the whistle and did a very good job in the circumstances. We started in a lesser drizzle, but it did not affect our hurling as we banged over 0-4 through Mike & Colm Spillane, a free from Alan Fenton, and Ronan O Regan. We were well on top at midfield and although Courceys got 0-2 Tom Carroll cut through for a great 0-1 and Darragh Lawlor had a great run but his shot was save by Stephen Nyhan. Then Courceys began to settle into the game and dominate in a few areas. In fact, they had the last three points to leave it 0-9 to 0-5 in our favour at half time.

Courceys attacked a lot more in the second half and Castlelyons seemed to sit back too much in defence. They were now pressing forward from midfield as our lads tired somewhat. We were lucky on occasions that good defending by our full back line and our goalie keep the green flag down as Courcey’s scored 0-3 from 65’s and were wide from two more 65’s. In fact, with just six minutes to go it was 0-13 to 0-11 and we were under savage pressure. Tom Carroll and David Morrison banged over two valuable 0-2 to leave us winners by two points.

We have moved to the top of the Premier league but with a game extra played. However, we still have a lot of ground to make up for the championship. Old habits die hard and we must push up rather than ultra-defence and must get the ball upfield faster and be prepared to lay it off a little more as its pointless taking a shot while under serious pressure. There is a bit of work to be done to for the Youghal game and this is not helped by a plethora of injuries. Colm Barry our star full back was injured with Imokilly in the game versus CIT and had in his ankle. Anthony Spillane is undergoing surgery on his groin this Friday. Both these men will be out for months and we wish him well and a speedy recovery. We have Jamie O Leary and Cian O Leary both out at present but hoping to start back after months out. Niall O Leary, thumb injury and Barry Murphy, hamstring and Ciarán McGann, back injury, are back in training again and played a part in the last game but must catch up in fitness.

While Darren Tobin our in-house coach with Mick Spillane and his management outfit are doing very well in the circumstances it is going to be a real battle getting a championship panel together considering the stars that are now out though injury. However, there is a few weeks to go and as the saying goes “yesterday is not ours to recover but tomorrow is ours to win or lose”. So best of luck in your preparations lads.

Subs: - Declan Varner, Ciarán McGann (both HT), Barry Murphy and David Morrison (both midway second half) Shane O Sullivan, Shane Fenton, Conor McCarthy, Brian O Donovan, Liam Moroney and Shane Fenton and Noel McAuliffe.
