Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 19th March 2018.

Castlelyons going well in Premier Intermediate Hurling League

Castlelyons 2-10 Blarney 0-10.

Our intermediate hurlers travelled to Blarney on St Patrick’s morning to play the home team in the second round of the Premier IHL. The weather was reasonable and with the pitch in good condition we faced the breeze in the first half. The two Cork stalwarts Colm Spillane, Castlelyons and Mark Coleman, Blarney did not take part but were present on the line urging on their teams. Niall O Leary lining out at centre forward had a great battle with Joe Jordan and scored a good goal with Ronan O Regan banging in another and we had a further 0-1 from Niall and 0-1 from Tom Carroll to lead 2-2 to 0-7 at half time.

We were in control for the second half but could not pull away as our efforts at scoring and taking our chances could be much better. However, Ronan Fenton, who had a great game was on target for 0-3 and Alan Fenton had 0-4 (0-3 frees) while Niall O Leary had 0-1. This left us convincing winners 2-10 to 0-10.

We have made a reasonable start on our return to the Premier IHL and are fourth in the league at present but there are a lot of tough games to come. Our next game is away to Mallow on Saturday evening next the 25th March at 7.30pm and we will have to strengthen the panel as the numbers are low. We would appreciate your support for the team on this one. Well done on to the team and management to date.

Team: - Jack Barry, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, Robbie Feeney, Colm O Neill, Aidan O Sullivan, Tom Carroll, Eoin Maye, Alan Fenton. Darragh Lawlor, Niall O Leary, Ronan Fenton (0-3), Brian O Donovan, Shane Moroney and Ronan O Regan. Subs: - Barry Murphy. David Morrison and Shane O Sullivan (all got game time), Jamie O Leary and Ciarán McGann (present but injured).

U21 Footballers play Midleton in Championship.

We play Midleton this Wednesday 21st March at 8.00pm in the semi-final of the East Cork Under 21B Football Championship at home in Castlelyons. In our last outing we had a convincing victory over a strong Glenbower side who are still in it as they play St Colman’s in the third round shortly. While have a very young team, we are not short in talent as John Paul Murphy is sound in goal, Eoin O Neill, Conor McCarthy, Andrew O Neill were strong in the full back line the last day. Peter Roche, Niall O Leary and Ian Riardon are very sticky in the half back line while David Morrison and Pearse Varner can hold their own at midfield, Shane Cotter, Barry Murphy and James Kearney provide a lively half forward line and if Richard Morrison, Mark Spillane and Jack Ronayne able to take their scoring chances inside we are up for it. Midleton must be respected as they are a strong outfit with a lot on the age. It is the semi-final and with the lure of a final I have no doubt our lads will work hard. Best of luck boys

Good win for Cork as they secure top Division status.

Cork hurlers were always in control of this relegation play off against Waterford in Páirc Uí Rinn last Sunday. In fairness to Cork they showed a big step up in form and the home sod suited as they hurled with width and took their scores well. Great to see our own man Colm Spillane, despite being caught unsighted and having to give away an early penalty, go on to have a whale of a game agus duairt said i SpórtTG4 on Twitter “Úsáid na gualainne ag Colm Spillane agus scór brea” when he scored a wonder point after fending off a Waterford man. So now its all to play for in the championship and no doubt all clubs will have their players for a while.

County SH Champions Imokilly in action on this Thursday in Riverstown.

We had the proverbial cracker of a year in 2017 with Imokilly going all the way as they lit up the county championship with some mighty hurling but what’s another year. So this year it’s back to the grind again as the Candy Stripes play Muskerry in Riverstown on this Thursday 22nd March at 7.45pm in the senior divisions hurling championship and its winner take all so there must be no slip up as Muskerry, themselves a formidable outfit, must be treated with respect. Best of luck to the boss Fergal Condon, his management outfit and all the lads.
