Castlelyons GAA Notes Double Weeks 2.10.17 9.10.17. 2017-10-14 14:36:00

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 9.10. 17.

Big Games for our U21 Hurlers and representatives with Imokilly this weekend.

County Under 21 A Hurling Quarter Final on Sunday.

We head down to Ballygarvan, at the back of the Airport, at 12 md on this Sunday 15.10.17 for the showdown County Under 21 A Hurling Quarter Final versus Clonakilty. This West Cork outfit, a bastion of football, are also creating waves in Cork hurling in recent times as they have a very strong under age structure and are competitive at Junior team level. They have a massive complex of new pitches, artificial pitches, Gymnasium, Hall and Bar a little outside the town. We must respect their U21 team as Mark White, goalie, Sean Donoghue, half back, David Lowney, Cork and midfield player and Cian O Donovan are all outstanding players and they had a good win over Kilmeen in the Carbery final. However, we equally had an outstanding win over Bride Rovers in a very good East Cork final and if we reach that form we should have enough in the tank to advance. We did play Cahir in a recent challenge and hurled well although a little short in numbers. Best of luck to our players and management outfit and let’s get behind this team in their quest for a county title. Castlelyons Abú

Intermediate Hurling League and Abernethy Cup Finals.

Kanturk have set the bar for 2017 by becoming PIHC champions last Saturday night with a rousing win over Mallow in the final. Castlelyons were so near them in the first round in Castletownroche and what a pity that bad start. However, we have made good progress too for 2017 and are in our rightful grade of Premier Intermediate hurling for 2018 because of that recent relegation battle and convincing win over Tracton. We are, of course, involved in some hurling at the business end of this season and that is the Division 2 IHL final versus Watergrasshill. The ‘Hill are at the top of their game with their recent win over Inniscarra and will provide extremely tough opposition. We all know what a derby is like and while it should be a mighty game we must harbour the strongest ambitions of coming out the right side so hopefully players and management are preparing dutifully for this game. Of course, we also have the East Cork Intermediate championship final, the Abernethy Cup, versus Cloyne and this game is left outstanding for some time. Hopefully, we will have dates and venues for these games next week. Best of luck to the players and our management team of Mick Spillane, John McCarthy and Colm Crowley to date over the next few vital weeks.

Uí Mac Coille draw with Sarsfields in county senior hurling semi-final.

The new Pairc Uí Chaoimh opened its doors on Sunday and what a day’s hurling we had with two outstanding senior hurling semi-finals as Blackrock overcame a strong Na Piarsaigh challenge to reach their first final in 12 years in the first game and then to what was billed the main event. Uí Mac Coille took on last year’s champions Sarsfields at 4 pm and this was an outstanding game as both sides drove on for the hour and could not be separated as it ended in a draw when Paudie O Sullivan put over a last second equaliser for the Candy Stripes. Once again, our men Colm Barry and Niall O Leary were supreme in the heart of the Uí Mac Coille defence and it was a day to be proud to be involved with Castlelyons although it was disappointing that our teak tough back Tom Carroll or inform forward Aidan O Sullivan did not get game time as this writer firmly believes they could have influenced this game.

The replay is on in Páirc Uí Rinn at 7pm on this Saturday evening and well-done boys but we must do it all again. While it would be nice to have the replay of a county senior hurling semi-final in daylight in Páirc Uí Chaoimh the GAA HQ of Cork hurling and football down the ages times have changed and while the Park is now in splendour it needs a big crowd for atmosphere and sure where better than Páirc Uí Rinn. Best of luck to the Candy Stripes and especially our own lads Colm Barry, Niall O Leary, Aidan O Sullivan and Tom Carroll. Your support for the team would be appreciated.

Monster Club Draw an outstanding success.

Castlelyons Adult Club, Juvenile Section and Camogie Club held the recent fund-raiser draw on Saturday night the 7th October 2017 in the Club Bar. The draw was an outstanding success and a cracking night was had by all. There was music, song, a few speeches and mighty craic with a great crowd present. Intercounty stars Timmy McCarthy, Finola Neville, Orla Cotter and Timmy McCarthy took part in an intercounty chit chat and question and answer session. Full credit to an outstanding finance committee who breathed energy into this draw and with the three clubs coming together this may be the start of a new era in the acquisition and provision of badly needed facilities for Castlelyons GAA. Incidentally, the committee produced a souvenir programme of the raffle with a special thanks to the many sponsors. Well done again to our finance committee. The winners were as follows.

Intermediate Hurlers defeat Tracton in relegation play off.

Castlelyons 2-18 Tracton 1-15

We went to Ovens last Tuesday night for an 8pm start in the relegation playoff versus Tracton and done well to take the spoils 2- 18 to 1-15 in a tough game. It was a good evening for hurling as it was calm and dry with the pitch in immaculate condition. In fact, when one enters the Eire Óg complex the level of change Cumann Lúthchleas Gael is appreciated as this is one of so many clubs nowadays with numerous pitches, all weather stuff, Gym, Bar and stand. Of course, the club is catering for a huge population with sporting culture going back to the days of the great Mick Malone and I am sure others. However, going back to the game, we started well but had a few wides while Tracton went 0-3 up before Aidan O Sullivan had a good 0-1 for us. Jack Barry had a scorcher of a shot batted away by their goalie who was again good enough to block the rebound from Aidan O Sullivan. There was good movement in our full forward line of Anthony Spillane, Jack full forward and Aidan O Sullivan in the other corner. This was despite Tracton, who were coached by the great Seanie McGrath from the Glen, set up with a sweeper system. But the hoover was not working as our centre forward who was double marked pulled outfield and this left room for the boys to work on.

Work they did as Jack touched down a beauty to Aidan O Sullivan who banged in 1-1 and Jack himself had 0- 2 with Anto adding 0-1. Our half forward line done well also with Mike Spillane 0-1, Ciaran McGann added 0-1 and Darragh Lawlor fielding and distributing very well. Our back line coped very well despite starting without Colm Spillane who had a knee injury and Declan Varner retired after five minutes again with a knee injury as Colom Barry and the Carroll brothers defended well in the full line. But Ronan Walsh was unerring for them from frees and it was 1-8 to 0-5 at half time.

The second half was tougher as Tracton came at us and twice reduced the margin to 0-3 as they out scoured us 0-5 to 0-3 in the first ten minutes. Our half back line of Colm O Neill, Niall O Leary and Ronan Fenton and midfielders Jamie O Leary and James Maye were working hard at this stage. We drove on again helped by 0-2 from Barry Murphy and the same player was fouled while Mike Spillane put over a free and Ciarán McGann had 0-1. Then it was Traction’s turn to turn up the steam as they had 1-1 but Aidan O Sullivan who was outstanding on the night banged in another goal for us and we got a few more pints as well. Tracton did make a second half fight of it but we are in our rightful position of Premier Intermediate hurling for 2018.

While no one likes relegation battles as they are tough and this was a good result especially given that since the start of the year we were missing a few players and Colm could not play. There will always be a drop off in players due to work commitments, injuries, etc, and this panel made sure they didn’t wallow in the mire but rather as they song says they set the night on fire with a good win that should toughen up everybody and put us all in good spirits. Now as we are also promoted to top level in the league we have the Division 2 league final coming up shortly against Watergrasshill and that should be the proverbial cracker on a date to be arranged. Well done to the players and our management team of Mick Spillane, John McCarthy and Colm Crowley.

The team and panel on the night was: - Shane O Sullivan, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, Tom Carroll, Declan Varner, Niall O Leary, Colm O Neill, Jamie O Leary, Eoin Maye, Darragh Lawlor (0-1), Ciarán McGann (0-3), Mike Spillane (0-4, 0-3 frees), Anthony Spillane (0-1), Jack Barry (0-2), Aidan O Sullivan 2-3. Subs: - Eoin Barry, Ronan Fenton, Barry Murphy (0-2), Liam Moroney, Brian O Donovan, Alan O Regan and Colm Spillane.

Junior B Hurlers defeated in East Cork Final.

Castlelyons 1-14 Sarsfields 2-23

This was a game that was always was going to be a tough one for our lads and despite a brave display we came out second best to a highly talented Sarsfields outfit on the score Sarsfields 2-23 to Castlelyons 1-14. There was a little bit of a problem the day before as Watergrasshill pitch became unplayable due to inclement weather and the game was moved to Rathcormac. However, Sunday was dry, a little breezy and Rathcormac pitch was in great condition and thanks to them for hosting the game at such short notice. We started very slow as Sarsfield raced into a 0-5 lead in ten minutes and they even had four wides. However, by the 15 minute it was 0-7 to 0-3 as we fought our way back good points from frees by Jamie O Leary and Barry Murphy and a mighty 0-1 from play by Ronan O Regan. Shane Moroney came out into the half line and caused havoc in the Sarsfields. We upped our game considerably and Dunny, Barry Murphy, Chris Cotter and Colm O Neill all had points. The score was 0-10 to 0-12 to Sarsfield at half time.

We started well in the second half and had a Barry Murphy 0-1 and when Shane Moroney goaled for us we were in the driving seat with 0-2 of a lead. However, disaster struck with two goals in quick succession for Sarsfields. These goals were scored from goalmouth melees as we failed to clear our lines and this gave them the confidence to drive on for an emphatic victory. Sarsfields were always going to be difficult as they now have a rich vein of hurlers in all grades and a strong population. However, thanks to our own players who did so well to make the final as in previous years it was a struggle for us to get out a second hurling team and we made the final with twenty-eight of a panel on Sunday which can only be good for Castlelyons. A sincere thanks to our management team of Donal Barry, James Maye, Larry Murphy, Darren Tobin and Colm Barry.

Panel: - John Paul Murphy, Mark Murphy, Liam Moroney, Noel McAuliffe, Shane Fenton, Cian O Leary, Declan Sexton, Ronan O Regan, Colm O Neill, Brian O Donovan, Barry Murphy, Ronan Fenton, Mike Hegarty, Chris Cotter, Shane Moroney, Brian O Donovan. Subs: - Eoin Barry, Michael John Dorgan, Padraig Murphy, Redmond Walsh, Alan O Regan, Michael Geary, Mark Spillane, Pierse Varner, Andrew O Neill, Seamus Moroney, Alex Henley, Mark Henley, David Beausang. (Man of the lads were given game time)

Uí Mac Coille advance to county senior hurling semi- final.

Well it was back to Park Uí Rinn on Saturday evening last for both replays of the County Senior Hurling Quarter Finals involving Imokilly v Erins Own and Sarsfields v UCC. Uí Mac Coille came out on top this time to advance to the county semi-final versus Sarsfields who defeated UCC. Both games were cracking episodes and our Castlelyons men men Colm Barry and Niall O Leary played at full and centre back respectively Candy Stripes win. UCC were next up against Sarsfields but were short some of their county stars. Castlelyons men Jack Barry, Colm Spillane played with UCC and had outstanding games. However, despite a game performance Sarsfields took the spoils this time to advance to meet Uí Mac Coille in the semi-final. So, it’s now to the new Pairc Uí Chaoimh stadium on Sunday for the two senior hurling semi-finals Blackrock v Na Piarsaigh at 2.15 pm and Uí Mac Coille v Sarsfields at 4 pm. This will be a great day for Cork and the Park as it opens again to club hurling, for An Roinn Uí Mac Coille and especially our men on the Candy Stripes panel, Colm Barry, Niall O Leary, Aidan O Sullivan and Tom Carroll. Your support for the team would be appreciated.

Congratulations to Daniel Carroll and Debbie Collins.

Congratulations to one of our former players and a good supporter, Daniel Carroll and Debbie Collins who recently tied the knot. Married in Castlelyons with the reception in Kinsale a good day was had by all with a good sprinkling of former Castlelyons players present. Daniel was a most promising player until illness interrupted his hurling career. Interestingly he holds an interesting Castlelyons record in that he played senior championship hurling at fifteen and a half years old when he came on as a sub against Cloyne. This record is likely to stand as the rule now forbids lads under 17 years to play adult hurling.
